    Hmm... I can't seem to reply to Paul's comment directly? But even so...
    I think I understand Paul's point, but is it practically feasible? If I have an hour of dialogue, going in and adjusting the gain for every clip would take quite a while, especially for audio that varies in loudness regularly. I'm editing a piece right now that 1.5+ hrs long, and there are hundreds of points where the volume varies by quite a bit; to be fair, this is an artifact of the recording set up and varying distances from the mics during the recording . But even for my normal recordings with my lav mic, just cleaning up the spikes (transients I believe you called them) after compression can be a bear.
    Lately I've just moved to a hard limiter to clean them up since the spikes are often artifacts of non-dialogue sounds like strange mouth noises between words (a lip smack or similar). ;)
    I should add that I am using Audacity and the Audition clip gain seems to operate like amplify. Modifying the clip gain in Audition looks much quicker. :)
    This almost makes me want to post a video of my audio and how I am editing it. *grin* The dynamic range of my recordings is much larger than yours.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Terranscapes Thanks! I think the answer is to use a leveler plugin which does exactly what we covered here, but automatically, based on a few settings. We'll cover that in a future episode. Incidentally, Audacity has a leveler plugin (I need to get in and use it to see how well it works relative to Audition's).
      And yes, this is an example of where Audacity and Audition differ, with Audition making things quicker. And also yes, the amplify plugin is your clip gain in Audacity. :)
      Thanks again for the insights, it is clear that you're living through these challenges in your projects!

    This is GOLD. Curtis! Thanks so much for this!
    Question: What would be the process when working with ALL 3 - (Dialogue-SFX-Music) ?
    Should we first roughly edit the audio levels of each ? And then apply all of the effects (Denoise, EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Normalization.....[in what order ??]) - on individual level OR is there a better way (or even a tutorial of yours) to approach that ?
    I understood everything in this video coz it was just 'one' dialogue.......How should we approach if there are multiple dialogues, SFX and BGMs ?
    Thanks much! :D

    • @curtisjudd

    Curtis thanks for great video! Right before you do match volume to -19, what is difference between just drag whole thing and increase volume vs "match volume"?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Ko Hi Jason, the big difference is that if you just select the entire audio clip and increase the gain, you don't know how far to drag up to hit the -19LUFS target. Match volume takes care of that for you. So if you use match volume to -19 for each video you produce, they will sound very consistent in terms of loudness from one video to the next.

  • @PaulFiggiani
    @PaulFiggiani 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Curtis, I don't think selective compression is your best option here, especially for spoken word. By doing so you are spot altering the dynamic attributes (and fidelity) of the selected audio. In essence the selectively processed segment is going sound different after you bump it up to your intended target. What I would suggest is to manually "level" the audio by making selections and applying Clip Gain compensation on each selection to even things. Do this throughout the entire clip. Then apply a single pass of "global" compression (if necessary) prior to Loudness Normalization. IMHO the results will be much more natural and pleasing. (-paul).

    Thanks for doing these videos!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Moritz, I usually normalize the audio first to get it to a baseline level for processing - usually somewhere around -26 LUFS, then apply the cleanup like noise reduction. Then when I have everything sounding right, I apply a last pass of loudness normalization to my target levels, e.g., -16 to -17 LUFS for web.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@curtisjudd Hey Curtis,
      thank you so much for your fast response!
      So your process would look like this:
      1. Normalize to -26 LUFS
      2. NR
      3. Amplification, compression, etc.
      4. Normalize to target loudness
      Is that correct?
      I'm currently working on a small web show as a camera operator and I'm also doing the sound, which I'm quite new to. This video already made the audio a lot better because before I used to normalize first and then do compression. Which did not sound that great and was a lot more difficult to work with as you tend to clip very easily.

    what's the difference of using "Amplify" vs "Clip Gain" vs "Normalize"? Adobe Audition has too many ways to do the same thing which always confused me
    everything you've done on this video can be simplify using the "Speech Volume Leveler", see... another method to produce the same output, so many different ways to produce the same result.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marcus, they're actually not all exactly the same. There are some nuances and different times when you might like to use each.
      Amplify and Normalize are similar in that they increase the amplitude of every sample (that's the over-simplified version).
      Clip gain is used to amplify or attenuate individual parts of a clip so you can make a very soft section louder while not changing the rest of the clip. Speech Volume Leveler uses an algorithm to run through a clip and try to automatically make the quiet sections louder and the louder sections quieter. This sometimes works well, but not always. I generally stay away from the leveler as the results can often end up sounding rather unnatural. Hope that helps!
