How To Extend The Boom On A Grove 60 Ton Crane

  • After a couple live streams in my crane, I had a few viewers that were wondering some things.
    1. Whats that clicking or Fishing reel sound?
    That is the drum rotation indicator (or thumper as some of us call it). You can feel and / or hear this activated when you are cabling down or cabling up. Any movment or the main drum will activate this.
    2. What do you mean by extending the boom or sucking in the boom?
    Extending the boom is just that. All the boom sections are stored within the main boom. Extending the boom out allows us to reach further out and / or higher up. Sucking in the boom, is retracting those sections. With the configuration of my crane right now I am limited to how high I can boom up.

    This is great. I never realized how computerized cranes are. Touch screens, menus, and more. It's like flying the Starship Enterprise! Nice video!

      This crane is over 10 years old. The computerized systems have progressed even further. The computer in a crane is more of an aid. I'm an operator that has pulled the load charts in the book for many years. Do your math. The reason being, if you have a computer issue you should know how to read the load charts so you don't put yourself in a bad position. When the guys im working with tell me to boom down 25 feet. I can look right at my computer and know how far I need to move. You will see in my upcoming video what I do when im "flying" material. YOu will have a view of the load and a view of how I'm operating the crane. Should be interesting. Thanks for stopping by Kelly.

      Glad you liked it Don. I had just finished moving my crane, got a set back up on outriggers, leveled up then it hit me. I think I'll make a video of what happens when I extend the boom. Plus the fishing reel. :) I'm glad you liked it.

      60Tons is its capacity. What it can lift. 60 Tons will be right off the front of the crane. With the configuration I have right now. I can handle a couple thousand pounds out 125-130 feet. Thankd ro stopping by DEI-WAN- GREY

      Oh I hear ya Rick, My first job I went out on as a crane operator was on a Link-Belt LS-108 Friction Crawler. Now all Union crane operators are certified. Re have to re-cert every 5 years. You are welcome for the video. Funny thing is..... I was able to do it all in one take. Imagine that. LOL

    Hello IamWedge, I have a request, Can you also make short video showing & describing boom modes on that Grove? Much appreciated if that's possible.

    • @IamWedge
      @IamWedge  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are no boom modes on a 60T You usually don’t see those until you are using 80T and up.Older models had A or B mode. Some newer Groves have A B X M modes. If you look at the charts you will see how capacity is different In certain modes. It all boils down to Strength vs reach. Each mode will control how or when certain sections are extended. The mode changes how sections are telescopes out. Hope this helps.

    Hey brotha, question...what book mode were you in, and also I’m hearing different things about what book mode is for heavy heavy loads and wich one is for normal operation. Please answer what you think .

    • @IamWedge
      @IamWedge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both stages of swingway with an offset is 0042. This is the correct load chart to be using for this set up. What you are talking about with normal vs heavy loads is the difference be tween A and B modes. Larger hydros have this the 60T does not.

      @@IamWedge thank you for this reply. I’m currently running a grove RT 760 and the heavy section comes out first which I’m not used to. I thought I was stuck in B Mode like the 90T grove RT but I guess that’s just how the sections come out?

    how can adjust the number of wire roll on the drum before wire full pull out?

    • @IamWedge
      @IamWedge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your drum isn't full and/or wire has been removed, you will have to actually turn around and check the drum. Especially when adding parts of line when using a block.
