Leopard 2a5/2a6 base armor without composites is stronger than 2a4 as they upgraded the armor with different ceramics/armor composition. Removing the composites does reduce the protection of the turret though.
Yeah it’s not even close tbh, it’s almost twice as effective on the left side and on the right it’s probably 10x as effective as there’s no hole for the optic (though overall slightly weaker than the left)
I believe that the base armour is made of composite material there may have been some improvements to the a5/a6 variants though I don't have any idea what those may be

I have a document that says why and has actual armor values for the 2A4, 2A5, and 2A6 and differences of the armor (behind the 60mm composite screen which is only meant to deflect the kinetic energy of a round before it hits the main armor) between the 2A4 and other two variant.
One thing that isn't taken into account is that they don't actually have the same armour
The Leo 2A4 uses Germany's Type A composite, which can be compared to Stillbrew/1st gen Chobham armour (Chieftan Mk10/11 turret armour and 1st gen Challenger 1s)
The Leo 2A5 (with the exception of the Strv 122) and 2A6 (at least the first gen 2A6s) use Type B, which is slightly better in protection than 3rd gen Chobham (Challenger 2 armour)
The Leo 2A7, (and later gen 2A6s and the 122 mentioned before) use Type C, which can be comparable to US 1st gen DU armour (The ingame base M1A2 turret, the M1A2 SEP has gen 2 DU)

A-tech doesn't exist - the 2A4 uses B-technology (source: Bri'ish and Swedish Tank Trials)
The 2A5/2A6 are using D-technology armour inside the turret and C-technology inside the hull (source: Leopard 2's Project Manager).

Very sus statements there😂 all these composits are extremely classified and no one knows their effectiveness. They aren’t even comparable, they have different compositions as well as different effectiveness’s against different opposition. Type A, B, C, pulled straightfrom your book of Type BS
It's cool that extra armor, like track armor on lower tier vehicles, can be destroyed, but they help a lot sometimes, so i wish there was a way to repair then, like going into a cap or something.

If you use tandem munition from BMP-3, it took two ATGM to penetrate the frontal turret armor of Leo2a5/2a6. The first ATGM destroy the wedge armor and the second one penetrate the turret armor. However, I never though a sabot munition still can't penetrate the frontal armor even though the wedge already gone.
That's cool, so that mean I can also do that with BMP-2M but much much more faster?

This is not a Leopard 2a4 turret, even the composite armor modules have a different shape (they are more angled)
Also the gunners sight isn't a weak spot

Looks sexy but the side skirts are made out of special material to block HEAT rounds.
Then again it's probably not modeled in game so it wouldn't matter
@@TheMysteryMushroom actually, it is modeled in the game. And for some reason, all rubber screens have better kinetic protection than NERA and composite screens armour.
That is because leopard 2a4 in game is actually a 2a0/2a3 (B type), the leopards 2a4 have new armor in the turret (C type)and then, the leopard 2a5 and 2a6 have more reinforced armor in the turret (D type armor), and over that is placed the V composite armor. Called mexas armor.
Without mexas, the turret have aprox 700 mm of armor against sabot ammo.
Well the Leopard ingame uses the b-tech armor. But yeah depending on what batch the 2a4s from it could either have b-/ or c-tech
Oh and the wedges are part of the d-tech armor upgrade and not part of mexas
I wonder if its the same as STRV 122 as its equipped with the B "PAKETTE" internal composite module when its armour gets blown off is it the same as the 2A4?

@trioner1734 No, the 2A6 is upgraded to D tech internal composite, although some that are upgraded A5s still retain the C-tech hull as a budget upgrade. The armour kit you see on the STRV 122 is actually what gives it the protection increase, not the internal composite. STRV 122 uses the same internal "Pakette" B as Leo 2A4 but is further equipped with "VORS. MODUL D-2. This kit is designed by the firm IBD Deisenroth of Germany for the Swedes. The C-Tech was not in service yet at that time, and the STRV 122 is based on the TVM MAX(Truppenversuchsmuster Maximal), not the Leopard 2A5 as is commonly believed. The 2A5 is a budget version of the TVM MAX. The STRV 122 falls somewhere between the TVM MIN and MAX.

I done this myself but if you click on the 2A4 turret the size of the armor is the same but some values are lower I forgot which one but the values on the 2A4 turret are lower than the ones on the 2A6

Leopard 2A5 turret without steel screens is not the Leopard 2A4 turret though? Leopard 2A5 turret is a complete redesign of Leopard 2A4s turret with much thicker armour all around. Place of gunners sight was also changed…

@@trioner1734 not composite wedges. The wedges are 80-100 mm angled steel plates with air behind them. (They form spaced armour.) Composite armour starts behind those screens, when you shot off the screens you can actually see where the composite armour starts. (And the composite armour is of a different composition as well as thicker compared to Leopard 2A4s hull and turret.)

It'd be cooler though if the non-steel armor had hitpoints because I don't really think a turret cheek can eat 1-3 ap darts with 600 mm penetration and still be equally good at stopping the next round..
Even with steel, high caliber hammering should eventually weaken it. Not normal bounces but the ones that deform the armor ofc.
@@IvanTre Degradation modeling would be hard for Gaijin probably. In real life when the triangle parts of the cheeks get hit they're mainly one time use for the most part - though can be easily replaced.
