- In this installment of Attack of the Famiclones HD, I'm taking a detailed look at RetroBit's Gen-X Hybrid twin console. This console is a Sega Genesis and Nintendo Entertainment System in one, and that's just the start of oddities it has.
This video is part 1 of 3. Please watch the subsequent videos when they are available.
I re-wired one of these controllers to have a SNES Plug for use with my Retro Duo.
Ah yes. Forgot to mention that in the video. That's totally possible with DB-9 Famiclone controllers since they carry all the signals a standard NES/SNES controller uses. You could also do the opposite and splice in an official SNES controller to have the Gen-X cord if you have an extra and don't want to go the convoluted adapter route that I did.
Cool series, Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the next part.
It can play all my Genesis and NES games I have without a single problem. The controllers work well but do feel a bit fragile. I would not try to button mash these controllers, but for the casual gamer they will last.
Man with explanation about these things is awesome
this same console is now being sold on AliExpress with the brand HAMY for about 50$
Hmm. I wonder if there are motherboard improvements?
Hello
Please can you show me the joystick board and the connections
Or a link to explain it
Thanks
These are being sold on Aliexpress, but is branded Hamy C-8 and has a 60-pin FC slot instead of the 72-pin NES slot.
How is the sound and graphics.. Is the sound and graphics good like the original Sega Genesis. And may you play some games on it so people can hear how good it is ?
Man I wish I had seen this before ordering. A shame they didn't just allow you the option to map the buttons. That could have made this whole NES mess fixed in an instant :( Any word on this thing's ability to play multicarts?
***** I agree with everything that you said except that the controllers feel fragile. I don't think that's the case. As long as you don't throw them across the room at walls constantly, they should last a good long while. These are much higher in build quality than most clone controllers.
i always prefer using the SNES controller over the 6-button Genesis-like controller, because I find that the SNES controller is more comfortable to play. If you have a black-colored SNES controller, I think that's more fitting to the Gen-X in terms of color. RDP controller works too.
Does a mega drive controller fit in the gen x
This seems... weird. I've NEVER seen a clone like this that tackles both the NES and the Genesis... but not the SNES. This is going to be decidedly interesting.
Yeah. There are a good number of NES/SNES clones, but NES and Genesis is a strange combination. That's why I had Retro-Bit send me this odd-ball for review.
No no, Retro-Bit has been selling the Gen-X since roughly 2006. This is just one of the newer revisions.
Bought this and its so generic both controler directional pads broke with in two months. I went to buy some more controlers the retailer said sorry they didn't sell the certified product controler. So they said you can buy a New Gen x system! I said hell no. So I end up throwing it away in the trash it was sad whishes I could of recycled it instead. I called this system (GENERIC-X)- GEN-X and 🙏☯️😎
where can I get some durable controllers for this? The d-pad on both of the controllers I got with it are broken already. Pretty flimsy.
lol how did you manage that? you broke both controllers? then there's really no hope for you.
I don't know, I don't think I pressed any harder on them any harder than any other controller. They just didn't make them very durable I guess. You did say that the controller ports are Famiclone compatible though? I think I saw some Famiclone Genesis-style controllers on sale.
dksilentbob
They're Famiclone and Super Famiclone compatible. Through a DB9 to NES 7 pin adapter you can use Nintendo NES controllers with the NES side, and through an SNES to NES adapter, you can can use real Nintendo SNES controllers. I can make such an adapter if you're interested.
Do you, by chance, know the pinout of the controller? I have this console but without a controller. A standard Famiclone one works, but no C button in MD mode. I'll try to get a SNES one but I'll have to rewire it.
can you connect the original sega genesis controller to Gen-x hybrid twin console
Great content 👍
Were are the diagrams for the sound and video fix?? Thanks.
This is better than my ps4 slim!
Game is saved on it and chip is not working on it
Thanks for this video I was thinking about buying one of these but if I can't just plug in original nes and genesis controller's I don't want it!
Do you know if a Famicom/Mega Drive clone exists or for that matter Famicom/Super Famicom clone?
I'm sure such clones exist, but you'd need to look at clones sold in Japan exclusively. Retro-Bit and Yobo sell clones in every market but Japan, where regulations don't allow them to set up shop. There, uniquely Japanese companies come in and make clones. So if you want a Famicom/MegaDrive clone, you need to look at places like yahoo.jp.
Say, you didn't put those mod diagrams in the descriptions....
Which are you looking for? I didn't do it because nobody asked for them.
Actually, I'm more curious as to whether I'm going to have to do that to the Super Retro Trio when it gets here, since I just got that off DasCheap. Have you seen that system yet?
damnit why am I hearing about this from a subscriber rather thanmy Retro-Bit contact? I wasn't aware DasCheap had a supply already. I was told it wouldn't be until the end of the month.
Anyway, I'm going to have to seek this info tomorrow, as I hasn't been sent me a review unit yet.
When I am, be sure to be expect a full detailed review much like this one.
Well, the DasCheap website SAID it was in stock, and I've seen other reviews already...
Oddly enough, only DasCheap seems to have it...
can you use a power base converter
I don't own one myself, but if it will physically fit, then this and any other clone based on the TCT-6801 GOAC in theory should be able to play Master System games.
That said, the real MegaDrive hardware achieved SMS compatibility by running the sound processor while the 6800 remained dormant. Because everything is integrated into a single chip on the Gen-X, it can't do that. The results will be glitches in some games.
This looks really cool but is it region free? Or is it region lock?
+kristian johansen Neither console is region free. This will run the NTSC-U games, with some compatibility for other regions but not fully.
Toy Story isnt compatible for some reason
Could you explain more detailed how to make snes controller adaptation? Thxs
You need to ensure the pinouts of both 4021s match. There's nothing more that I can really say, it's just something I can do.
Hi Satoshi, thank you very much for this detailed review. I've sent you a private message here on YT if you have time: I can't find in this video any reference to NES input lag, and it is not clear to me where to find your modding instructions. Thanks
On my blog, but the posts were years ago...they might not exist anymore now.
Satoshi Matrix thank you, I really hope they are still available! And what about "input lag" for NES games? (It is referenced in a couple of comments here, but not in the video)
Will it work with light guns?
I don't know about the Sega Genesis Menacer, but the Zapper won't because of the plug difference.
20 min video and you never showed the machine on , 20 mins I’ll never get back 🤦
You did not even turn on the console!
That's becasue this video is part 1 of 3. Watch the other two as well.
