Once you go experimental Hip Hop you can never go back. It's absolutely demolished my chances at a normal life, when I here pop music now all I can think is "this would be so much better if it sounded like shit".

@@captainafro2310 what? What is that supposed to mean? A critic being overrated? Are you talking about him being the busiest? Is there anyone else who reviews as much stuff? I like Shawn cee but he just does hiphop stuff. Not useful in the least. Whereas melon has introduced me to swans, daughters, mount eerie, fleet Foxes and a lot more
hey I trust Alfo as well but for a video like this you can get a similar list of albums from the top charts on rateyourmusic.com. Some obscure indie recommendations you probably won’t know: Coldplay- Yellow MGMT- Kids Imagine Dragons- Radioactive Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Arctic Monkeys
I am so happy you mentioned Bjork. She is incredible in the way she incorporates art, fashion, technology, and experiments with different songs in her music. She truly is one of a kind.
5 amazing albums i’ve been listening to a lot recently Slanted and Enchanted- Pavement Dio- Holy Diver Deftones- White Pony Pet Shop Boys- Behaviour The Holy Bible- Manic Street Preachers
honestly kate bush changed the way i view music, she's still ahead of the musical curve 30 years later, and still can't be described by a genre. any sort of quirky art pop musician from today owes their career to her.
I agree. It's funny when he was talking about Björk (who I love) I felt like he really should have mentioned that she's been hugely influenced by Kate Bush. Kate is a true innovator and a lot of art pop musicians owe it to her for paving the way with her wonderful work.
@@Missjunebugfreak Kate is cool but I think some give her too much credit as she herself also had her influences (Laura Nyro is one of them, I think). Bjork did say she respects her and lists The Dreaming as one of her favorite albums, but I think musically she's too different.
Nader Abed Dude, everyone have influences. Of course. And whether you were influenced or influential doesn’t really matter to the quality of the music, except that it changes the context of the music. Bottom line is that Kate Bush is an absolute genius :-)
@@-user_redacted- That track is fucking hilarious, the way Danny come's in at the end is amazing and made me laugh so much when I first heard it since I didn't know he was on it beforehand
Another great Japanese band that’s in the “Math Rock” sub genre, is called TOE. They are super heavy on instrumentals, with blends of funk and rap. The album is super fast past and very much like the band you suggested. Almost identical.
badlula you are an absolute king. If you haven’t heard Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennaes To Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor HIGHLY recommend as well. It’s pretty much tied for my #1.
some recommendations of my own ig in case anyone is interested: (art pop): -Hounds of Love by Kate Bush -MAGDALENE by FKA twigs -Melodrama by Lorde (ambient pop): -Serotonin II by yeule -I Need To Start a Garden by Haley Heynderickx -0 by Ichiko Aoba (last two are more ambient folk pop but I still recommend) other various rec’s: -4EVA is A Mighty Long Time by Big K.R.I.T. (southern hip hop) -Birth of A New Day by 2 8 1 4 (vaporwave) -Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu (neo soul) -A Love Supreme by John Coltrane (Avant-garde jazz) -græ by Moses Sumney (Alt R&B, art pop) -A Seat at The Table by Solange (neo soul) edit: few more things hat I've found since this comment: -Boy in Da Corner by Dizzee Rascal (grime) -No NOW by Clarence Clarity (experimental pop) -Hiding Places by billy woods (underground hip hop) -Original Pirate Materials by The Streets (UK garage) -공중도덕 by Mid-Air Thief (Psychedelic Folk) -Play With The Changes (alt r&b, UK garage)
I can't listen to Bjork anymore cuz I got into Vespertine / Homogenic around when my ex-gf and I split up so now all the songs sound like they're about her. Feels bad
That's awful. I hope you can listen to her again someday, especially Vulnicura and Utopia (in that order). I was amazed at the change of tone showing her healing between the two
My recommendations in no particular order: Low - Double Negative [indie rock, sadcore, glitch-pop, art pop] World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland [experimental rock, noise, glitch, breakcore, modern classical, post-rock] Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz [experimetnal pop, glitch, noise, indie folk, electropop] Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin [alternative hip hop] Tarentel - From Bone to Satellite [post-rock, experimental rock, noise] Mono - You Are There [post-rock, modern classical] Envy - Insomniac Doze [post-hardcore, screamo, post-rock] Mogwai - Mogwai Young Team [post-rock]
If you like World's End Girlfriend, I'd also add Vampillia (since they are signed to his label). Can't even name the genre you just gotta experience it. They are definitely inspired by Joe Hisashi's music but also by Mr Bungle and black metal. Shit's bonkers!
@@mishab4065 It's a bit difficult to define what genre exactly WEG is known for, but some people do actually classify as post-rock because of no vocals and some rock instrumentation too (as Simon Reynolds said that the genre is best described as "rock music using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures rather than riffs and power chords" in his review on Hex by Bark Psychosis, the first ever post-rock album that coined the term itself) but most of the stuff that he in fact has done from Farewell Kingdom to his most recent mini-album Meguri is described as a hybrid between glitch and modern classical because of classical instrumentation like violin and cello and simultaneous skipping and chopping that 65dos would incorporate in their music. The point is that his music is genreless at one point, because he actually reinvents itself at each album (e.g. Ending Story was a glitchy plunderphonics record with IDM touches on tracks 2 and 7. But when we get to Hurtbreak Wonderland, it sounds like a completely different artist but with the same glitchy spirit of his earlier works.) This guy is very difficult to get into, and some people (who are not into the glitch genre and his music overall) might find his glitchy mix with classical and post-rock annoying. If you really want a great introduction to this guy, check out his collaboration with Mono, they released a handful of albums that can be considered post-rock. But yeah I understand your point.
Uknowwhatimsayin was lowkey more fun than atrocity. I see why critics would rate atrocity higher but for an avg music fan, uknowwhatimsayin is much more enjoyable.
Considering he already recommended Danny already, I recommend JPEGMAFIA-Veteran after Atrocity Exhibition, then The Money Store- Death Grips after Veteran
Here are 5 albums I'd recommend: Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced Parliament/Funkadelic- Maggot Brain Bob Marley- Exodus David Bowie: Low Brian Eno: Before and After Science
@@camach. Maggot Brain is one of my top 10 favorite albums ever. The title instrumental is one of the most raw and moving performances I've ever heard, and the range of influences from metal to big band make it one of the best funk albums ever imo.
@@thedopestbody Nah, man, Funk is superficial. Maggot Brain is pure unadulterated Phenomenal, Cosmic Omniversal Astral Rockin' Blues. Eddie Hazel's magnificent guitar solos on songs like the title track and Super Stupid represent even greater heights that George Clinton failed to surpass with Parliament, Knee-Deep, and Atomic Dog. The Lyrics aren't on the same level as something by Dylan, sure, but the album itself is definitely worth a listen too.

One subgenre of music I've been into is jazz fusion. If you're into instrumental music, jazz fusion is essentially a blend of jazz and funk music. Probably the most foundational album in the subgenre is Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock, but I'd also recommend Heavy Weather by Weather Report. Chameleon (Head Hunters) and Birdland (Heavy Weather) are some of the most standout tracks jazz has to offer.
Fusion has massive albums overseas as well, especially Japan. If you check out T-Square you get these super complex jazz textures that sound like Mario Kart tracks, it's so fire, their songs Truth and Daisy Fields are so cheesy it's comes right back around to being cool. Massive recommendation there.
I'd pretty much heard of everything mentioned here but i was especially grateful for the Tricot shoutout because they're just amazing. I know some people are resistant to listening to music in other languages but tricot transcends that. They're so good at what they do.
I've been listening to Beach House for years and I never knew what exact genre they're called. First time I've heard of shoegazing, sounds pretty cool.
My favorite hidden gem albums: No-Man - Flowermouth Bosnian Rainbows Bosnian Rainbows Fishmans-Long Season Spoon - they want my soul Lemon Jelly - Lost horizons Porcupine Tree - Lighbulb Sun Devin.townsend- Ocean Machine
5 albums that blew my mind on my journey through music: John Coltrane -Òle Aphex Twin - Drukqs Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key of Life Jonny Greenwood - The Master JPEGMAFIA - All his singles from 2020
@William Magee Oh I didn't say the albums were obscure in anyway. These albums were just the first ones that helped open my mind to new music when I first heard them. There is no right or wrong answers when it comes to music. It's all about the context of what you've heard before that determines what you're gonna enjoy. When it comes to free jazz I think Ascension is not a good choice to introduce someone to the genre. You'll have them running for the hills scared if they don't have context for that kind of music. If we are looking for albums from Coltrane Sun Ship and Transition would be great. They have a little bit more structure but are just as wild and free. Easier to grasp on to. But like I said before whatever the genre you can't really introduce it to someone by just listing your favorite albums and telling them to listen. Your music tastes changes organically over a long periods of time. All about context. Peace.
@@Nikoych That bass on Olé's first track still haunts me and Aisha is unspeakably beautiful. Also I agree with what you said about the subjectivity of music. There are so many albums that I love today that I wasn't able to enjoy on first listen, but after listening to other stuff I was able to come back to them and really digest the music completely
@@PedroAugusto-tb2zo Yes! I still haven't heard anything that sounds like Òle when it comes to bass playing. Just insanity. Great introduction for anyone looking to get into jazz. It's a fantastic feeling when you come back to an album that you really didn't get previously and suddenly it all seems clear. Thousands of gems to be found when you keep an open mind.
Hearing björk - lionsong and rediscovering björk from my childhood, expanded everything of myself, I found music that made me feel at home. I made connections with new people through my love of the new music and I found myself helping myself with these music as a sorta meditative process.
Amazing video man. I loved seeing artists i knew and being like "yeah!" and then also learning about things I didn't even know I was interested in. Gonna check out all these recommendations :)
I'll throw in 5 of my favorite semi-obscure experimental albums that I think are good for beginners: Codeine- Frigid Stars LP (1990, slowcore) Slowcore was a subgenre of rock that developed adjacent to grunge and alt-rock in the late 80's and early 90's. It tackled many of the same nihilistic themes, but instead of the loud and unpolished sound of grunge, it used a slower, more atmospheric sonic pallette. This is my personal favorite slowcore record, mostly just for how crushingly sad it is. With how slow and lethargic the instrumentation can be, it really does portray the feeling of depression and not being able to move, while also being hauntingly beautiful at times. Boards of Canada- Music Has the Right to Children (1998, IDM) The mid to late 90's were a boom time for forward thinking electronica, the best of which came from Boards of Canada's 1998 debut. This album focuses less on dance rhythms and more on psychedelic soundscapes and catchy melodies. The repetitive song structures allow the production to almost put you in a trance. Dalek- From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002, experimental hip hop) Dalek are basically the godfathers of industrial rap. One listen to this and you can trace the lineage of albums like Yeezus and The Money Store. The production is extremely eclectic, pulling inspiration from everything from metal to psychedelia, but my favorite aspect is the rapping. MC Dalek has a butter-smooth voice that he uses to deliver esoteric but well-crafted lines about things other rappers wouldn't even conceive of. The Caretaker- An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011, ambient) This album was based on a scientific study claiming that Alzheimer's patients could still remember the music they listened to when they were younger, as well as thoughts and feelings associated with that music, which might be the most unique album concept I've ever heard. It's basically a hauntingly beautiful sound collage of music from the 1930's and 40's. I'd also recommend Everywhere At the End of Time, which tackles similar themes, but it's a lot less accessible. Clipping- Splendor & Misery (2016, conscious hip hop) Clipping are best known for making grimey, industrial hip hop (the same kind Dalek makes), but on their sophomore effort, they get a bit more high-concept. Splendor & Misery follows the story of a runaway slave in the distant future, alone on a spacecraft drifting through the galaxy with nothing to guide him but his machine. The sparse production and theatrical rapping help to emphasize the album's dark and isolating atmosphere, while slave songs are sampled throughout the album to tie the past, present, and future together.
I agree with the Math Rock take so much. When people ask if guitar music will be revolutionized again, I think Midwest Emo and Math Rock is the genre that is doing that most currently. Sleepy Dog and Tiny Moving Parts. Good stuff
@@MjSa-es4zu he's an underground goat, but definitely pretty expirimental. He's got one of the most unique deliveries there is, and the beats are far from traditional.
So mine would be: The White Stripes - Elephant (blues rock) Foals - Total Life Forever (accesible math rock) Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (experimental hip hop) Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (stoner rock) Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (neo soul) Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly (hip hop with countless influences) Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (disco/electronic) Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia (nu disco) Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say That I Am, That's What I'm Not (punk/garage) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (post-punk)
@@liamrobinson5303 I'd argue it's like a transition from the definitely math rock Antidotes to the more arena-oriented Holy Fire. There are still some shades from the debut, like those intricate riffs from After Glow and Blue Blood for example. It's beautiful.
Total life forever has that bit of transition from math in Antidotes (This Orient, What Remains and the absolute gorgeus end to Blue Blood) and the beggining of their Alternative and more accesible stuff from Holy Fire (Black Gold, Miami and TLF) however it comes to their most soothing and comforting sound and it’s own thing. Their best imo. Absolutely beautiful album TLF 💙
If you are a beginner.. MBDTF - Kanye West In Rainbows - Radiohead Another Green World - Brian Eno Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads Abbey Road - The Beatles Everywhere at the End of Time - The Caretaker SAW 85-92 - Aphex Twin Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins VHS - CASTLEBEAT Spiderland - Slint Aja - Steely Dan Rumours - Fleetwood Mac Tago Mago - CAN In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson Debut - Björk Some of these have eclectic sounds embedded in them, would be a good start for a new listener to get into different genres and acquire a good taste in music...imo
MF Aphex Heads I think Caretaker type is for more focused listeners, that album takes a toll on you mentally, and is one hell of a listen. As for the essentials for some beginners, Bjork debut, Abbey Road, In Rainbows, ITCOTCK, and MBDTF are all great place to start.
there are sone great albums in that list but p much everybody loves the beatles, i don't think Abbey Road would expand your music taste by much(not that you shouldn't hear it), it's not even the most experimental beatles album.
I would add Rush - 2112 Death Grips - The Money Store The Dear Hunter - Act V Oceansize - Frames Igorrr - Hallelujah (mix of grindcore and electronic, very open mind needed) Stolen Babies - (they have just 2 albums and they are all great, think girly pop meets alt metal) O'Death - Out of Hands We Go (very dark and spooky country, they are a hell of musicians) Tiger Lillies - Freakshow (think the internet's funniest shitpost but with circus music)
I'm so glad you put a spotlight on math rock, so much good stuff that people really sleep on in that genre. I highly reccomend Twin Galaxies by Delta Sleep.
5 random records Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (80's art pop) John Coltrane - Interstellar Space (Free Jazz/Improvisation) Double Leopards - Halve Maen (gorgeous soul destroying noise drone) Mineral - Endserenading (90's emo that goes a little deeper than american football) U.S. Maple - Sang Phat Editor (absolutely deconstructed noise rock)
I recommend my all time favorite album 'CALIGULA' by Lingua Ignota (classical/extreme metal/noise) Standout tracks: DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR, BUTCHER OF THE WORLD and IF THE POISON WON'T TAKE YOU MY DOGS WILL. "It's about my experience in Providence, speaking out about abuse and feeling invalidated, and people who I thought were my friends no longer being my friends, and the crushing experience of how that feels." -Lingua Ignota speaking to The Guardian about CALIGULA.
My taste in music has always been very diverse since I was young. I dont know how you could only listen to one genre or not explore, wouldn't that get boring, there's so much music in the world people who say they don't like music haven't found it yet.
let me hit you with some introductory metal albums for non-metalheads Carcass - Heartwork (Super accessible melodic death metal) Bathory - Self Titled (Probably the first bm album and still holds up. So fast and evil) City Morgue - Hell or Highwater v1/ (crazy intense hip hop and every release they're getting even more metal and extreme) Deafheaven - Sunbather (very pretty black metal :) ) Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane (Melodic black metal, it's just good idk what to say) Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (spooky scary stoner metal)

Lateralus by TOOL changed my life, especially when listening to the album as a whole. They’ve always been my favourite band but I never listened to the entire album as a whole until a few months ago. It’s one of the best albums ever made imo
I’d say another recommendation for dream pop imo would be “Ceres & Calypso into the Deep Time” by Candy Claws. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and it’s very nature based and good at creating a nice atmosphere.
Great picks. Tricot is such a great introduction to Math Rock. Where I personally got into the genre through retroactively checking out Hella because of Death Grips and in effect w as s diving right into the less accessible version of the genre, I really appreciate the way Tricot takes all that complexity and technical ability but also has just as much Pop sensibility. It's definitely not easy to compose something so complex but also easy to pick up on first listen. Also, I think AE is one of the best introductions to experimental rap. It definitely has so much potential to give people a more out there experience with Rap while also rooting it in enough accessibility to make it more palatable than more overt exprriemtnal records.
I don't know how I haven't listened to more Björk because I listened to Homogenic almost a year ago and it was one of the most entrancing wintery-sounding albums I've ever listened to
My recommendations to people usually for different sounding music are: Boards Of Canada: MHTRTC Aphex Twin: Richard D James Bjork: Homogenic Oxbow: Thin Black Duke Deltron 3030: self titled
Its hilarious how i found danny brown through a meme video. And from there, not only he is one my favourite artist but universally respected hip-hop artist. Really hope he blows up a bit more.

The reason I enjoy your channel is because you manage to disagree and agree with me on strange levels that I love thinking about. While I’m not much of a Kanye stan, the things you enjoy about him, I tend to not and vice versa. I absolutely love that you manage to recommend old school 80s pop and one of my favorite bands in tricot. Keep it up, love hearing it man’
I'm glad I'm not the only one that mentioned them. Great discovery for me in the last month. Always wondered what math rock was. Listening to covet a little too.
Jaswanth CS Polyphia, imho, is a little annoying to people that listen to the genre, but for those uninitiated, it’s an incredible gateway into math rock. They have a very poppy approach and I feel that their usually happy, light, poppy arrangements have a more broad appeal to a general audience than say, some of the darker and more metal influenced math rock out there like Animals as Leaders
cat eatin rat Plini is wonderful. Sunhead is fantastic. The song Flaneur from that album is one of my favorites from him, and it’s really genre bending in my opinion. Jazz, rock, sax, piano, synthesizers, both high and low intensity moments; I just love it
I watched this video ageess ago to just take the first recommendation you gave and dip. I’m coming back because I’m so thankful for the tricot recommendation and want more. CGPP IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE AS WELL I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN I HEARD YOU SAY THAT RN. It gives me the vibe of the last episode of an anime series. It’s got an emotional feel especially with the slower paced guitars playing at the very start. Sometimes I feel like it should really be the last song on the album.
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I've been in a terrible music drought lately and this really opened me up to Tricot and Air! Feel like I've got a wild journey ahead of me with both of these artists :)
How about some metal albums: Heavy Metal: Paranoid- War pigs and Paranoid Number of the Beast- Run to the hills and Number of the Beast Thrash: Master of Puppets - Welcome Home, Orion, Master of Puppets Rust in Peace - Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, and Hangar 18 Nu Metal: Vol 3: Subliminal Verses - Before I Forget, Vermillion Part 1/2 Prog: Metropolis Pt 2 - Scene Seven and Scene Eight Lateralus - Schism and Lateralus Death: Blackwater Park - Bleak, Dirge of November, Blackwater Park Sound of Perseverance - Voice of the Soul, Spirit Crusher, Scavenger of Human Sorrow. I could list more, but I think that’ll do it for now.
Holy shit, AIR is awesome. My buddy referred to them as “elevator music you need on your playlist” and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s so calming yet emotional; I put it on when I need a good cry and when I need to fall asleep peacefully
Really appreciate this video man, it’s got me out of being locked in my hip hop/R&B bubble that I’ve been in for years! Now I can’t stop listening to Air and Tricot 🤩
Love the fact that for artpop u mentioned Bjork. She is not credited enough for her Wonderful music. Usually, when artpop is the topic, ppl tend to Point to more recent musicians. Yes, they are amazing, but Bjork opened the gate for everyone of them (and for US too
Thanks for any recommendations here in comment section, that makes me think that music is so so so wide and wonderful thing to ever happen for human kind
Perhaps Björks later albums aren't as accessible or mainstream as her first four albums(Debut,Post, Homogenic, Vespertine)were but without a doubt spending time with her music is such a rewarding experience. Don't be afraid to listen to less popular or obscure albums like Medulla or Biophillia. Vulnicura is a personal favourite. Every album has something interesting. If POP music is your thing you can try Goldfrapp,Eivör, Sevdaliza, Roisin Murphy, Caroline Policheck.
One new artist in the experimental Hip-Hop Genre is Trademark-S. The kid's young and still developing but he makes most of his own beats for his albums. He has two albums out. It's almost like cinematic synth rock meets spoken-word Hip-Hop. Pretty dope!
I think these are just the surface. People should really dive into the genres of traditional music around the world. honestly kate bush changed the way i view music, she's still ahead of the musical curve 30 years later, and still can't be described by a genre.
any sort of quirky art pop musician from today owes their career to her.
I agree. It's funny when he was talking about Björk (who I love) I felt like he really should have mentioned that she's been hugely influenced by Kate Bush. Kate is a true innovator and a lot of art pop musicians owe it to her for paving the way with her wonderful work.

Chameleon (Head Hunters) and Birdland (Heavy Weather) are some of the most standout tracks jazz has to offer.
from heavy weather I think palladium is also good.

Peace.

I'll throw in 5 of my favorite semi-obscure experimental albums that I think are good for beginners:
Codeine- Frigid Stars LP (1990, slowcore)
Slowcore was a subgenre of rock that developed adjacent to grunge and alt-rock in the late 80's and early 90's.
Boards of Canada- Music Has the Right to Children (1998, IDM)
The mid to late 90's were a boom time for forward thinking electronica, the best of which came from Boards of Canada's 1998 debut. This album focuses less on dance rhythms and more on psychedelic soundscapes and catchy melodies. The repetitive song structures allow the production to almost put you in a trance.
Dalek- From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002, experimental hip hop)
Dalek are basically the godfathers of industrial rap.
The Caretaker- An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011, ambient)
This album was based on a scientific study claiming that Alzheimer's patients could still remember the music they listened to when they were younger, as well as thoughts and feelings associated with that music, which might be the most unique album concept I've ever heard. It's basically a hauntingly beautiful sound collage of music from the 1930's and 40's. I'd also recommend Everywhere At the End of Time, which tackles similar themes, but it's a lot less accessible.
Clipping- Splendor & Misery (2016, conscious hip hop)
Clipping are best known for making grimey, industrial hip hop (the same kind Dalek makes), but on their sophomore effort, they get a bit more high-concept.
@William Magee I'm totally unfamiliar with the genre, and am fully aware that Boards of Canada are great.
Thanks for recommending Dalek. I hadn't heard anything from him before, but he sounds good so far and I'm looking forward to checking more out.

The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Clash - London Calling
Both essentials imo

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (80's art pop)
John Coltrane - Interstellar Space (Free Jazz/Improvisation)
Double Leopards - Halve Maen (gorgeous soul destroying noise drone)
Mineral - Endserenading (90's emo that goes a little deeper than american football)
U.S. Maple - Sang Phat Editor (absolutely deconstructed noise rock)
I recommend my all time favorite album 'CALIGULA' by Lingua Ignota (classical/extreme metal/noise)
Standout tracks: DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR, BUTCHER OF THE WORLD and IF THE POISON WON'T TAKE YOU MY DOGS WILL.
"It's about my experience in Providence, speaking out about abuse and feeling invalidated, and people who I thought were my friends no longer being my friends, and the crushing experience of how that feels." -Lingua Ignota speaking to The Guardian about CALIGULA.
As well as Jazz Rock, Jazz Rap is absolutely beautiful too. Loyle Carner is a perfect example of this especially his songs with Tom Misch imo
All of these are great recommendations! Good stuff Alfo!
My taste in music has always been very diverse since I was young. I dont know how you could only listen to one genre or not explore, wouldn't that get boring, there's so much music in the world people who say they don't like music haven't found it yet.
Had to sub when you dropped tricot. Not enough people talking about my favorite band of all time
let me hit you with some introductory metal albums for non-metalheads
Carcass - Heartwork (Super accessible melodic death metal)
Bathory - Self Titled (Probably the first bm album and still holds up. So fast and evil)
City Morgue - Hell or Highwater v1/ (crazy intense hip hop and every release they're getting even more metal and extreme)
Deafheaven - Sunbather (very pretty black metal :) )
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane (Melodic black metal, it's just good idk what to say)
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (spooky scary stoner metal)

Lovin' that deafheaven record!!
Lovin' that deafheaven record!!
Sunbather is in my top 10 albums. I'm so glad to see someone mention it :)
To extend,
Norse Folk Metal - Heilung;
Best Album; LIFA
Industrial Metal - Mick Gordon
Best Album; Doom Eternal OST
I had the pleasure of seeing tricot perform live in their first North American tour. Me and my friends decided to go see them on a whim. I was blown away by how they sounded, each member of the band cohesively melded into a large, technically impressive, emotionally powerful, unified voice on stage. Genuinely one of the best shows i’ve ever been to.
So glad you mentioned atrocity exhibition
Idk if it's a good starting point but it's a damn good album
D. P. It seems somewhat easier to get into than other experimental hip hop albums though
@@alienjack6375 I beg to differ because of his voice. I think something like RTJ4 or 2 would be a better starting point
D. P. Fair enough. Something like the rtj’s then atrocity exhibition
@@pd9052 I can definitely agree with that. I hated Danny the first few times I heard him, but as I heard more I grew to really enjoy his work.
Thanks for shouting out Tricot! One of the best math rock bands out today. Thank you Topshlef Records for signing them in the US.
Idk if this will be seen or not, but here are five other “taste expansion” albums I recommend!
Ben Levin - People
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Default - California Nebula
American Football - americ anfootball (LP1)
MF DOOM - MM.. Food
Absolutely love sound of silver
Mf doom production might be the most abstract and versatile ever for me
Since everyone's recommending something obscure, the most obscure subgenre of music that I love is called "Ethnic electronica", a cross between ambient tribe music and electronica.
My favorite song of that kind is
Deep Forest -Sweet Lullaby
Some random guy from Reddit recommended it to me and I never looked back since lmao.

Lateralus by TOOL changed my life, especially when listening to the album as a whole. They’ve always been my favourite band but I never listened to the entire album as a whole until a few months ago. It’s one of the best albums ever made imo
good prog
I’d say another recommendation for dream pop imo would be “Ceres & Calypso into the Deep Time” by Candy Claws. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and it’s very nature based and good at creating a nice atmosphere.
I’m a simple man. I see Björk. I click.
+69 (+1)
Björk is truly something else.
3:05 lol he said pp
I don't know how I haven't listened to more Björk because I listened to Homogenic almost a year ago and it was one of the most entrancing wintery-sounding albums I've ever listened to
Steely Dan is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. From Aja to Can’t Buy a Thrill to Pretzel Logic, they can’t miss.
Prince, used to like uk band field music, some of their stuff is like the dan and peter gabriel
Thank you so much for this video! You've really opened my mind to a whole new world of music🥺
My recommendations to people usually for different sounding music are:
Boards Of Canada: MHTRTC
Aphex Twin: Richard D James
Bjork: Homogenic
Oxbow: Thin Black Duke
Deltron 3030: self titled
Thin Black Duke is such a hidden gem
Deltron impressed me way beyond my expectations. The sci fi shit was pretty cool
Solid picks!
Thanks dude! I know every record here except oxbow, solid recommendation!
@@davidm9026 "Serenade in Red" is their best album, imo.
Its hilarious how i found danny brown through a meme video. And from there, not only he is one my favourite artist but universally respected hip-hop artist. Really hope he blows up a bit more.
For anyone who wants soft jazz listen to :Throbbing gristle's 20 jazz funk greats.
You evil, evil man. Nice.
i was literally just listening to six six sixties hahahhaa
hahaha! Nice!
Cecil Taylor and Albert alyer be smooth as silk too
I've been waiting for a video like this. Thank you.
10 Albums I Personally Recommend:
Frank Ocean - Endless
Tears For Fears - Song From the Big Chair
Fishmans - Long Season
Kenshi Yonezu - Diorama
Flume - Hi, This is Flume
The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2
LemKuuja - CHEESECAKE+
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe (')
Blank Banshee - Blank Banshee 0
Death Grips - Exmilitary
Lemkuuja needs way more attention
I want to call this a good list just seeing it on the surface but alas, I have heard 0 of them.
Don’t eat the yellow snow
Was not expecting to see Yonezu on there awesome list
Intisar Iqbal my favorite album of all time btw
I don't know if you'll see this Alfo, but thank you for putting me on to so many unique genres and artists!
Since people are posting their own recommendations, here are some albums from scandinavia, where i am from, that go unnoticed in other parts of the world:
kent: du och jag, döden
Mew: Frengers
Honningbarna: Voldelig lyd
Trentemøller: the last resort
Bo kaspers orkester: Amerika
Madrugada: the nightly disease
Kashmir: the good life
The soundtrack of our lives: welcome to the infant freebase
Håkan hellström: känn ingen sorg för mig, Göteborg
kent: Isola
There are more, but these are a few personal favorites.
Would also add Veronica Maggio-Satan I Gatan, one of my absolute favourite pop albums
Love water slides by mew
mew the norwegian yes ,brillant
The reason I enjoy your channel is because you manage to disagree and agree with me on strange levels that I love thinking about.
While I’m not much of a Kanye stan, the things you enjoy about him, I tend to not and vice versa. I absolutely love that you manage to recommend old school 80s pop and one of my favorite bands in tricot.
Keep it up, love hearing it man’
Deaths - Symbolic got me into death metal, so I guess that's a good album to expand your taste.
Man I’ve listened to THE nonstop since this video thank you for your recommendations 🙏
If we’re talking math rock, don’t forget about CHON
I'm glad I'm not the only one that mentioned them. Great discovery for me in the last month. Always wondered what math rock was. Listening to covet a little too.
Would Polyphia be considered math rock? I think it's a good band to start with
Plini-Handmade cities is a highly recommended album!
Vespertine and Atrocity Exhibition are in my top five albums of all time lmao, great list tho
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I've been in a terrible music drought lately and this really opened me up to Tricot and Air! Feel like I've got a wild journey ahead of me with both of these artists :)
How about some metal albums:
Heavy Metal:
Paranoid- War pigs and Paranoid
Number of the Beast- Run to the hills and Number of the Beast
Thrash:
Master of Puppets - Welcome Home, Orion, Master of Puppets
Rust in Peace - Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, and Hangar 18
Nu Metal:
Vol 3: Subliminal Verses - Before I Forget, Vermillion Part 1/2
Prog:
Metropolis Pt 2 - Scene Seven and Scene Eight
Lateralus - Schism and Lateralus
Death:
Blackwater Park - Bleak, Dirge of November, Blackwater Park
Sound of Perseverance - Voice of the Soul, Spirit Crusher, Scavenger of Human Sorrow.
I could list more, but I think that’ll do it for now.
i'd suggest Toxicity-System Of A Down too, that album turned me on to metal.
mudvayne - LD50 for nu metal as well
This is all to mainstream
Number of the beast is more of hard rock
Ride the lighting is better than master of puppets
Hell yes. Vulnicura is amazing and very emotionally potent
Aja was a fantastic record, so glad steely dan got some love here.
Holy shit, AIR is awesome. My buddy referred to them as “elevator music you need on your playlist” and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s so calming yet emotional; I put it on when I need a good cry and when I need to fall asleep peacefully
When typing a search for a genre isn't enough and you have to rely on word-of-mouth for education...
Thanks for making this video. I've been in a filter of just metal and classical music lately, so its good to hear something different.
For progressive jazz rock I recommend “Thank You, Scientist.” Their second album is amazing.
Seconded, and also all their albums are amazing
YES YES YES AND YES. Incredible band.
yea they are great like snarky puppy
do bonkers vids as well like the cardiacs
Didn't know the Steely Dan and tricot's albums. Gonna check them out. Also props for choosing Vespertine out of all albums in Bjork's catalogue.
Inb4 100 gecs meme
Loved this. For Jazz Rock, I’d recommend Jaga Jazzist. Seriously impressive and listenable long plays.
Awh common man, when you started on experimental hip hop I was soo hoping you were gonna go with Clipping,
Danny Brown’s good too tho
Really appreciate this video man, it’s got me out of being locked in my hip hop/R&B bubble that I’ve been in for years! Now I can’t stop listening to Air and Tricot 🤩
obscure music fans be like:
"so, no /mu/core? aight, imma head off."
Mac Millers faces is about as experimental yet true and raw as it gets
One new artist in the experimental Hip-Hop Genre is Trademark-S. The kid's young and still developing but he makes most of his own beats for his albums. He has two albums out. It's almost like cinematic synth rock meets spoken-word Hip-Hop. Pretty dope!
I think these are just the surface. People should really dive into the genres of traditional music around the world. Mande, Tishoumaren, Throat Singing, Nueva canción latinoamericana, Garifuna, Wassoulou, Andean Folk, Gamelan, Pinpeat, Qawwali, Chinese, Hindustani, Korean or Japanese Classical Music or even the most experimental of genres like Sound Collage, Musique Concrète, Electroacoustic, Field Recordings or Free Improvisation. To me, that means to truly broaden and expand the musical horizons
I made a playlist for those interested:

have you got a playlist or anything for any of these genres? interested to listen but dont know where to start
