I used one a few days ago after seeing a YT video on ink and bleach creations. I was inspired so much that I tried just the ink part and was so surprised when the finished article wasn’t bad. I love to use dip pens. I found a glass candle holder in a cupboard, ideal inkwell; perfect little cup on a relatively big base making it very stable, impossible to knock over.
I just bought a fountain pen and some ink to work under and over my watercolor paintings. Once again Michelle, you've shared valuable knowledge with this fledgling. Thank you.
Hi Michel, I started dip pen and ink painting for 3 weeks know. Your videos are helpful. Tried a glass pen, not for me, I'll stick to a metal nib. Thanks
Hello Michele, it happens I was searching for this video, just purchased my dip pens and the same acrylic ink. I've never worked with a dip pen before, should be fun. Thank you for sharing, you are a peach!
It's my experience that preparing the nib by removing the protective oil coating it comes with from the factory, makes it a lot easier to work with. You can dip it deeper in the ink, draw for a longer time and reduce the risk of splotchy discharge. Nibs also vary a lot in their ease of use. The Brause nib nicknamed Blue Pumpkin is a good place to start, but it's worth searching for reviews of nib before buying.
I will try the dip pen and ink. My husband was a rendered at an animation studio back in the day. He painted the lines of the characters using dip pen and acrylic paint. The nib would splay slightly making thinner or thicker lines which added weight to the characters. He was very good at it. I bet he's got a pen I could borrow.
I love using ink! I started with crow quills then switched to Micron pens, now I'm going back to crow quill dip pens. :-) Thank you for your amazing tutorials!
Oh Michelle, I'm so excited to try this technique! I've done pen and wash, but not using a dio pen. I've also noticed I was using the pen upside down. Wonderful! Be careful though, it often looks on screen like I have the nib the wrong way up because of the camera angle. The side with the cavity should be down, and the side with the outward curve upwards.

Really like this idea! I have tried ink pens with watercolour which gives an interesting line work but as you need them to be more fluid which makes the lines quite light. I have a muted purple ink and a few nibs so will definitely try this. Have shared on my fb feed!

I always use a dip pen. I like ink and wash watercolors. I like the low-tech aspect of dip pens and I won't run out of ink with a $5 ball point or artist quality felt tip in the middle of something. I do have a fude fountain pen coming though, which is kind of high tech for me.
Another excellent instruction, and one I’ve not seen anywhere else! I just bought a glass dip pen, but haven’t used it yet. Have you used them and, if so, do they work as well as regular dip pens for this technique? Thanks so much! Have a blessed day! 🌸
I was lucky today and found a dip pen set with 12 nibs, half of which are Fude's, and small bottle of ink at the thrift store. Do you ever use a blow dry your ink drawing to save time? The ink shading and shadows shown here, as an under painting, had never occurred to me before and it looks wonderful. I have to try this out and your video is the first one to come up on my feed.

I just love your videos Michele! Love how you explain & demonstrate everything so clearly. Makes me want to go & have a go straight away. I have used a dip pen many years ago. Will now go and dig it out of the archives - haha. By the way, have you ever used watercolour brush pens? Are they worth buying? And Permanent Brush Markers as well. Thank you again for these very informative videos. I need to be able to hang my ipad around my neck to watch while I‘m doing my housework! 😂
Actually I watch my favourite TH-camrs whilst washing up in the kitchen, one day the phone will fall in the sink! I haven't used the brush pens but some of my students use the empty type, the ones you fill with clean water and they like them very much. Most of these new watercolour markers are very good and highly pigmented. I think they are very useful for crafts, illustration and travelling. I will review some when I get a chance :-)
I had terrible trouble trying to get the ink to flow on my new dip pen so had to resort to the glass pen I couldn't resist ordering at the same time, which works well but is quite a fine point so not enough ink to stay wet enough to brush with water to produce the wash effect. Did a bit of research & found you have to prime the nib first. Fished nibs out of the bin, primed them with alcohol to get rid of the protective oil used by the manufacturer and hey presto, they all worked beautifully! :) Hot water also apparently works - which is your favoured way of priming new nibs?
To be honest Susan I find the ones that work best are the old ones that have a ton of ink built up on the nib. I often take mine to classes and my students sometimes let ink dry on the nibs. Then they pick up extra ink and work much better!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you Michele and I will certainly be interested in seeing how they mature. It was just a question of getting my first ever nibs fired up!
Fascinating. Thank you. I bought a dip pen but have never used it. May I ask, how do you clean it when done and also, how to clean watercolour brushes that have the ink on? (I think you said the ink is permanent so wouldn't want to ruin my good brushes).
The ink is usually acrylic, so the same as acrylic paints, don't let it dry on your brush, and probably don't use your very best watercolour brushes as it's hard to avoid some residue remaining. As for the nibs, just rinse in water and dry. I don't worry about residue left behind as I find it actually improves how much ink is picked up, but if you did want to get rid of all of it then very hot water softens acrylic so it can be scrubbed off.
If yiu could di videos of Chinoisserie style painting from xuan paper / rice paper to Silk backed paper to simply the Chinoisserie style painted in water colour roll like arches - that will be very interesting as No one else is doing it other than short clips that leave lots of guessing . @@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber - I think the artists 👩🏻🎨 they use a projector 📽 to show the image panel size like 3 / 4 feet wide x 7 / 8 feet tall. It will Be great to have projector recommendations to reach that individual Traditional Chinoisserie panel size. Again like de Gournay or Gracie. Thank you 🙏 so exciting to have your expertise! ❤️
I use a dip pen too and really enjoy the fine lines it can produce on hot press. I prefer to paint on cold press but the lines are difficult to keep neat because of the raised surface. I even use a dip pen for my masking fluid and am thinking of buying one of those odd shaped nibs that have a flat circle at the bottom for larger masked areas. Does anyone have any experience with those types of nibs? or shall I just get a calligraphy nib?
Hi 🙂 I don't know those nibs... I am not sure how a calligraphy nib would work. Your description sounds almost like an embossing tool, the have a little ball on the end. It could be worth a try, or one of the glass dip pens might be good, one of my students had one, it was pretty impressive!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you, I think I might just buy a few different nibs and see if they are any good with masking fluid. Cue buying from Ali Express and waiting 6 months ;) I will let you know.
Hi Lori, it's fine to use your watercolor brushes, but most of these inks are acrylic, so just don't let them dry on the brush and rinse/clean well after use.
I have used a dip pen for years. Not in your fashion though, rather as the method to make the entire drawing. Basically a pen and ink drawing, with all the little techniques included for shading, depth, etc. The only reason was due to lack of readily available ( & affordable!) materials. Looking forward to seeing your finished Geisha. The style is an untried favorite. I love their use of color to set not only a mood but an attitude as well! Wonderful video. I will have to do some experimental exploration with my ink. I learn something every time I watch one of these videos. Thank you for sharing!
You are very welcome :-) The Geisha is part of my paid course, but if you check out my Facebook group you can see a finished photo, if you scroll a bit :-) facebook.com/groups/inthestudiowithmichelewebber/
Just found this because I want to try a dip pen. Great tutorial! I have a question, though--what do you do if you accidentally let a small drip occur on the white space of your work? Is there a way to gently use water and a brush or blotter to lift it like with watercolor? Thanks.
Ink is permanent so you have to live with your mistakes. If it's still wet, blot it, after that leave it alone is my advice, or it will probably look worse...
I have been curious about this grisaille style painting technique but for some reason didn't think florals would work --- obviously, I'm wrong. This is a good alternative to trying to find a black watercolor paint that won't lift. (I only have one brand that doesn't --- but then, I didn't pursue the technique so it didn't matter). Do you suggest that one not use a beloved watercolor paint brush with ink? I wouldn't want to ruin the few good ones I have if that were to be the case. Thanks :)
Hi Lisa, because the ink is acrylic, it shouldn't be allowed to dry on the brush. I do use my watercolor brushes, but perhaps not brand new ones. Be careful with some inks that are labelled calligraphy, sometimes they are not waterproof. Good luck with your work!
Hi! While watching you draw with the dip pen, it looks like you are turning the pen point upside down. Maybe I am just cross Eyed! Thanks for your TH-cam lessons. db
I don't know! I don't think so, but I was making video yesterday for my students and when I played it back that's how it looked. I think it's more likely just the angle of the camera :-)

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks very much
If yiu could di videos of Chinoisserie style painting from xuan paper / rice paper to Silk backed paper to simply the Chinoisserie style painted in water colour roll like arches - that will be very interesting as No one else is doing it other than short clips that leave lots of guessing . Colouring the background & layering . Water colour mixing eith Gouache etc. In the de Gournay Gracie style . Thank you 🙏 🙌 ❤️
Request noted, I will try 😄

Wonderful i will keep. Checking in ! De Gournay & Gracie panels thats what im aiming to DIY ! 😃
I'd like to try this with homemade walnut ink but it's water soluble so I guess it wouldn't work.
Beautiful! I've seen artists use a dip pen with watercolours. Have you ever tried it?
No I haven't but it's a good idea!
Are you using paintbrushes that you still use for watercoloring or has a set for just using with ink?
Hi Lori, it's fine to use your watercolor brushes, but most of these inks are acrylic, so just don't let them dry on the brush and rinse/clean well after use.
Hi can you tell me would I be able to use alcohol inks? Great video by the way, very informative 😊
I see no reason why not :-)
I have used a dip pen for years.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber thank you!
Did the ink smudged because of watercolor?
The ink is only soluble when wet. When dry the ink will not smudge.
❤ Dip pen Old dark house try that, babe.
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you very much! Just one question: can I use the dip pen AFTER painting with watercolor?
Yes you can!
I love this technique it is definitely a favorite. I can't wait to see your Asian painting!
Thank you so much!
Hi! While watching you draw with the dip pen, it looks like you are turning the pen point upside down. Maybe I am just cross Eyed! Thanks for your TH-cam lessons. db
Probably just the camera angle - not sure, I never watch myself if you know what I mean!
Are u using the side of your pen?
I don't know! I don't think so, but I was making video yesterday for my students and when I played it back that's how it looked. I think it's more likely just the angle of the camera :-)
Nice nails.😉
Thanks 😅
Pretty sure this video was made to provide an opportunity to say _“whilst.”_
