- I've obtained a copy of the BJR LP 133, this track has just been copied through a pioneer turntable purchased new in the mid 90's and saved as a flac file. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get a great quality digital transfer? The records are in mint condition, but i would like to get them cleaned.
The images are scans from the booklet, i tried to scan the whole thing, but it's too big for my scanner, and i had a lot of trouble with resolutions and...well, i gave up.
The audience was right to demand an encore to this spectacular performance!
This performance will no doubt be the best performance of this opera for eternity.
In so many ways, this performance is the pinnacle of bel canto art: a timeless score, brilliant musicians (that is chorus, orchestra, maestro, singers), and a perfect moment in time where drama and music combine to make magic - Callas' voice soars like a falcon's cry above Mt. Olympus! Magnificent.

What opera is meant to be. Many say it is Callas’ best performance ever. Perhaps, but almost every performance I hear of hers I think it is the best that particular opera has experienced. Tears flood my eyes whenever I listen to Maria because I understand I am hearing singing on a soul level that I may never hear again. I know I may sound over the top, but I sincerely believe she was a gift from God.

Il famoso sestetto alle parole "Chi mi frena in tal momento" in questa edizione live storica diretta magistralmente da Karajan, viene senza indugio bissato! Di Stefano fa sfoggio di un canto generoso, molto attento alle indicazioni della partitura... Il finale è suggestivo con effetto di forte impatto emotivo; l'accento rende con grande eloquenza il furioso sconforto di Edgardo-Di Stefano .....Grandissimi, unici, divini Callas, Di Stefano e Panerai!

Que extraordinaria producción. Di Stefano estupendo, gran pasión, gran actor y la CALLAS, incomparable, con esa entrega y desafío. Siempre cantaba como si esa fuera su última oportunidad para cantar. Cantaba como si se fuera a morir después, sin ahorrar nada, con coraje, con valentía y con una entrega total. Karajan extraordinario como acostumbraba a estar siempre. CALLAS LA DIVINA....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, they certainly stopped the show, didn't they! How I envy the people who were in the audiences during Callas' great years. And of course I mustn't forget the greatness of all the other cast members, as well as Herr Karajan, who made this such a great performance.
Thank you for sharing - recording technology in '55 no where near todays' and yet they sound amazing. What it must have been like live, must have been truly special. Just awesome.

What can anyone say about perfection in art as heard here -- Callas' Lucias were above anyone who has attempted to sing them Some vocalized the role but there was no evidence of the character of Lucia -- a young woman -- depressed and helpless due to a dominating brother. Callas brings all this character to play as does DeStefano and Karajan allows Donizetti's music to soar into perfection.

I cannot believe this. So vital. Each element from orchestra to soloists to ensemble is passionate and distinguished and then there's Maria Callas! Sigh!

Absolutely agree with you. Some of the nonsense designs are an insult to fine singing, great composers and paying customers.

I don't mind avant-garde settings if they make sense, especially when these operas have been staged THOUSANDS of times.
What really bothers me is the atrocious singing technique nowadays...and the egotistic and "intellectual" CONDUCTORS who allow them.
To think that by dressing the singers in period costumes they are going to sing better, is delusional and does not adress the true problem.

Pay attention to Di Stefano's "explosive" high B's at about 2.05 min following Callas and repeated at about 2.50 min.The only other tenor I heard doing this interpolation is Caruso.

play record through a receiver filter out crap cd copies as is must have phono equalizer most new one s have that this sounds good here both before lost anything due to age

Di Stefano makes it all terrible because he wants to sing constantly loud, terribile, altough his voice in the high notes is still beautiful!

Oh. Joan Sutherland's avid fan is here. Yes, I agree. Her voice had already changed in 55, but she still nailed the aria regardless of her voice condition -- perfect interpretation and still pleasant to hear.
