  • From The Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 2001. Directed by Jennifer Rutherford. Far right and anti-immigration politics are on the rise worldwide. In Australia, as in many other western countries, a new political force is drawing on the discontent of those who feel excluded from the promised benefits of globalisation. This revealing documentary follows One Nation candidate Colene Hughes over two years and two elections as her idealistic fervour slowly turns to disillusionment. Initially for Colene and her supporters, One Nation seems to offer true democracy and a way of knocking the country back into shape. But when Colene starts to question the control of party leaders, the gloves come off and, at the party’s annual general meeting, the two forces collide.

The main protagonist in this has a different hair style in literally every single new frame of her, that is impressive! Especially as it seems like some shots are only days or weeks apart haha! so good!

I lived through these times as Colene Hughe's Campaign Manager. I was not a One Nation fan as I had met Pauline and I had problems with her political knowledge as well as David Oldfield. I was Colene's Manager for Colene only not Pauline. Colene worked her butt off trying to get elected. If you watch the whole video, you will see that Colene knew what needed to be done, but Pauline and David didn't like someone smarter then Pauline. What killed One Nation success in the Federal Election in Queensland was a picture of Oldfield with his latest flame sitting on his knee. However David also had his hand slightly up her dress. This was on the front page of the Courier Mail the day of the election. Now Queenslanders being Queenslanders did not like seeing that picture and that didn't go down too well. The biggest kick in the guts for all One Nation Candidates was the fact that ON wasn't a political party and all that money spent by the candidates went to line Pauline and the two David's pockets. Being involve with ON cost Colene a hell of a lot, both emotionally, physically and financially. Everything I said in the video was and is factual

Because these migrants are now seen as a normalised part of society. So the fear in the 90's about Asian's has subdued because they are now just seen a normal part of Australian society. These people are conservative to change, and in a twist to the story some of these Asian migrants also live by traditional and conservative values. For example now banding together on the issues on gay marriage or religious freedoms.
