  • Japan's Shika deer that live in Nara Park are national treasures and bow to get their special Shika Senbei snacks. They're cute and all, but nation-wide they've become a menace to farmer's fields and forests. We’re investigating so stay tuned!

    Seems like the problem started similarly like kangaroo in Australia. Initially protected and without natural predators, they eventually over populate and ruin the ecosystem. Now it’s actually encourage to eat kangaroo meat and you can find kangaroo meat options in supermarkets. Not sure whether Japan will reach that point or not though

    • @yekutielbenheshel354
      @yekutielbenheshel354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I presume the Japanese are going to begin eating deer. Why not? Without enough bears, wolves, lions, and tigers to prey on them, the deer population will explode.

    • @Jhud69
      @Jhud69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Japan already eats deer though. I mean is there a country that doesn't? They're like, the most common game animal. These are only protected because they are considered a kami to the shrine. They're not a problem all over the country, just in Nara (and also near Hiroshima that also has "sacred" deer).

    • @kyraarts
      @kyraarts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just commented that they should start eating them

    • @LifeWhereImFrom
      @LifeWhereImFrom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yes, Japan does eat deer. Not nearly enough considering the explosive growth in population in recent decades. They now cull deer to keep the population in check. The problem isn't really in the park, but outside of it and all over Japan. When the deer exit the park's boundary they are literally fair game.

    • @yekutielbenheshel354
      @yekutielbenheshel354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LifeWhereImFrom Why not place dozens of live animal traps just outside of the boundary to the park, bait them with food that attracts deer, and then ship the deer that are caught to a slaughter house.
      The resulting venison might be sold in ordinary supermarkets or perhaps fed to Japanese school children. Too many deer is as big a "problem" as too much rice or too many oranges. It's not a problem at all; it's an opportunity.

We have a family friend who’s a hunter, and he makes quite a bit of money from ‘dealing with’ deer that are bothering the local farmers. And so, as you might imagine, we also have local restaurants serving deer meat. Thanks for the good content, as usual. 🍻

    The issue could be similar to what happened in the American West, particularly in Yellowstone, where wolves were hunted nearly to extinction, which caused the deer population to explode.
    I’m not saying the Japanese heavily hunt the deer’s native predator, I’m only suggesting that a predator-prey imbalance could be the cause of the high numbers of deer

    There was a similar problem on a smaller scale in Ipswich, Massachusetts a number of years ago. After a big bru ha ha, selected hunters were allowed to go in and thin down the herd. I believe that herd thinning takes place each year and the deer meat is not wasted. It may be a solution for this situation. Deer are like any other herd animal. If there is no natural predation then the herd grows uncontrolled which to lead to disease among the herd that could wipe them out completely and property, crop and land damage as you've stated. It's time to harvest this resource wisely perhaps.
