The lpx chain is truly impressive for what it is. For those unaware, it is actually a reduced kickback full chisel chain. Ie safety chain. My echo 590 came with an LPX on it from the factory, and it had always cut admirably with it. I ran it like that for probably 15-20 tanks and put a Stihl RS chain on it. When the tip is out of the wood, there is no noticeable difference. The LPX, by the nature of a reduced kickback chain, slows noticably with the bar buried. But that's the only time it shows at all as the slower of the two, and it's only if you are paying attention for it. That being said, the 24" bar and Oregon LGX chain (the EXL without an oiler groove in the driver links) seems to pull noticably better out of the box. I have only ran about 1/4 tank through it with that chain, and barely any hardwood, so I haven't run it enough to say yet. The Stihl RS seems to hold an edge slightly better than the LPX, but the LPX felt easier to file, of course, my file is at the end of its life now as well, so that's another variable to potentially blame. I did grow up running Stihl saws with RS chains, and the Oregon chains seem to cut at least their equal. I'll be surprised if the LGX isn't a bit faster than my particular loop of RS. It seems as though the Stihl chain is a harder steel, while the slightly softer Oregon chain takes an edge easier, files easier. I'll probably stick with Oregon as their chains seem to only cost about 2/3 what Stihl and Husqvarna charge for theirs.
Thanks for the info! I was curious as to the difference between the LPX, LGX and EXL chains. I bought an Echo CS-620P and it came with an LPX chain. Cutting speed isn't a huge issue for me but any future chains I purchase I may possibly lean towards the EXL.
But I love how fast my husqvarna chain cuts right threw the wood and I have just had to file it after a year of use. But I do intend to start running a file a few times after each or every other use of the saw.

Well there is no challenge here.
