Loved watching this along with The Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits and others as both a young child and later as a teenager and again as an adult. Epoch-making storytelling which expanded the boundaries of TV/film/radio and other media and showcased the work of great writers whose works were later made into films, video games, et al. In my mind, OSB is not quite as cutting-edge as The TZ and TOL but a great show indeed, and one which forever reminds me of all the great old radio (Quiet Please, Lights Out, Black Mass, et al) and TV shows including Star Trek, The Invaders, The Night Stalker (the original X-Files lol) which wowed me as a child and then again as an adult and which had a lasting impression and have held up exceptionally well w/the passage of time. The reboots and shows clearly based on these originals couldn't capture the same magic and even contemporaries like Dark Mirror while fine can't quite compare, with exceptions like Lovecraft Country and all the movies, books and games that never would have come to be were it not, for example, for Rod Serling and the many talented writers he worked with like Charles Matheson, Campbell and many others whose works led too a myriad of classic films from the original The Thing to, well, you name it, and much much more. The people behind shows like One Set beyond, The TZ, The OL (and the radio shows which preceded them such as those mentioned above but also including Inner Sanctum and later, CBT Mystery Radio, stood on the shoulders of giants, sure, from Poe to Verne to Lovecraft to Wells to (long list), but they added so much to the genres of horror, sci-fi, psychic phenomenon, the "supernatural", social commentary and so on, their work was deeply. significant to say the least. Thanks for posting!
I've always loved watching "ONE STEP BEYOND"!! When I was a kid, my Dad and I, would watch these late nights, either weekdays or weekends. And they just stuck with me ☺️!! I've always managed to catch a episode, here and there, until I bought my collection. One thing, I never seen this episode before!! The actress here Virginia Leith, played in a creepy, sci-fi/horror pic, titled "THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE"!! (1962), I believe. Worthwhile interesting movie, with an original story. And with the uncut version, a little gory (in 1962 sense)!! One thing though, this 'channels'' description of this episode, reads 'S1, E1'. I have a "ONE STEP BEYOND" DVD collection, and it lists the episode "THE NIGHT OF APRIL 12", as 'S1,E1'. I think this is correct, cause in the series intro, the sponsor 'Alcoa' promo, is shown. The whole first season had Alcoa promo's, in the beginning.
The lead, Virginia Leath, found her most famous role as just a head (I’m not kidding) in the 1962 sci-fi/horror film “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.” I believe that the other beauty in this episode is a Desoto, possibly a ‘58 Firesweep. Leath died in 2019 per Wikipedia, Desoto sadly expired long before that.
Those old Mopars 1957 & '58 had the "392" Hemi V8 w'4 bbl, or dual 4 bbl carbs in Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Desoto & Imperial. They were optional and cost more. They set many track records at dragstrips nationwide, 1951~'56 had smaller hemis.
👏 Good one!!! And THIS story had as many "twists & turns" as Hamlet did , too!!! I had to "stay on my toes" to keep up with the convoluted details of this storyline! ....... and acting was fabulous!!! 🎦 📯
What a great show. I like One Step Beyond more than The Twilight Zone. I think this show is better than modern shows. Thanks for posting this episode and others.
This episode was supposedly based on a case in Italy during the 1930's or 1940's of a male victim who returned to torment his murderer. OSB typically took a story or part of a story and fictionalized it for television. Some episodes were allegedly a retelling of an entire incident. It was the original "True Paranormal" show made for TV.
What a great time for tv viewers ..one step beyond .. twilight zone .. I don't believe I missed one episode .. great cars I didn't watch these shows when first broadcast .. no cable where I lived .. the roof antenna did not pick them up .. watched the reruns
Suzanne B, "Cable television began in the United States as a commercial business in 1950" - Wikipedia entry for cable television. I thought you were correct in saying there was no cable TV in the fifties when OSB was first broadcast, but I decided to check. "At the outset, cable systems only served smaller communities without television stations of their own, and which could not easily receive signals from stations in cities because of distance or hilly terrain."
Didn't know that / I lived in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate N.Y./ terrible tv reception / it wasn't until about 1970 before cable become available in our area
“The Bride Possessed,” Seaon 1, Episode1, 20 January 1959: Virginia Leith as Sally Conroy / Karen Wharton, Skip Homeier as Matt Conroy, Harry Townes as Dr. Alexander Slawson, Ann Morrison as Mrs. Wharton, Janet Hughes as Nurse, John Shay as Policeman, Frank Richards as George, Duncan McLeod, Reception Guest, John Newland as Himself (Host), Clem Fuller as Tommy, and Charles Perry, Reception Guest.
I vaguely remember this show as a child. What an excellent show ! TZ is my favorite but these are very well done. These older shows have such great dialogue IMHO ~ Look forward to more
Noticing the actresses' "vintage hourglass" figures. One saw a lot of that, in the '50s films. Back then, food was more wholesome; no GMOs,or other contamination.
@notajp My mum didnt wear corsets, she had a fab figure in the 60's when I was a kid....but there were No convenience foods, she cooked every day and She never learned to drive, walked a fair way to work and to the shops daily.
I love the truth in that. Its very very true and there is a helluva lotta injustice in US for true spirit energy to try to correct and some get stuck and no matter the hard and fearful feeling ways, still offer the light for them to find in a ream of bright or yellow light they can be released into universal energy heaven zen whatever any departed can find their way out of living energy towards peace after great injustices to so many. Fighting human evil is not easier with the spirits but at least there is willingness to fight humanevil that most humans do little to end. Mother Mary herself has put upon human knowledge that even the heavens have been shaken by the World Evil man has left unattended endlessly now.
I know I was raising my own voice telling the husband to stop yelling while the wife was crying out to be heard. Then I said to myself "" theyre doing all that yelling and now Im doing it too, but they need to stop all that." Funny, sometimes the one actor reacts to the level of the other actor intensity and its a lot of intensity and I was reacting to its stressfulness trying to tell him to stop but laughed at myself catching that I was adding to it.
Wow, freaky....1959 was the year I was born, this episode is 65 yrs old! I have never heard of this show before now. Quite possibly every actor from this is dead, but the female lead was brilliant ,I must say!
The pilot that sold the series to Alcoa Aluminum, originally telecast on January 20, 1959. The first episode was filmed at Universal-International Studios. Production moved to MGM for the balance of the series.

The WILL of the dead goes where it desires to. Alzheimer's patients continue their stasis after death, causing some hauntings, witnessing my own father in his world after death, totally oblivious my dream self could see his every move. This similar incident happened to me and my friend Elmer while we were driving, just before we turned off the headlights to let the full Moon at the end of the road light up the perfect straight road. The dips is what makes it fun, the slower you drive the longer you are in the darkness, out of the moonlight with the headlights off! So just before I am about to turn the headlight switch I hear a stern "NO" inside my head, so I turn to tell Elmer in the passenger seat, and he is already looking at me and says" I heard it too" before I could open my mouth. So I pulled the 63 Comet to the side of the road to discuss this phantom voice, and we decided it had to be a kid prankster with a bull horn at the high bushes about 100 feet off both sides of the road. Elmer said " I will check this side" and took off in a jog toward the tree line , so I did the same thing on my side of the road . At the high bushes I saw a drop off so I veered right- and then I thought I heard Elmer walking up behind me, so I call out to him saying Watch out for the drop off at the tree line, and then there was silence, and then after 3 of the longest seconds of that night, when I didn't hear anything at all, I ran back to the car like a gazelle. As I approached the robin egg blue straight six coupe my friend Elmer is approaching saying he thought he heard me behind him and when he didn't hear me or see me he ran back, so we got in the Comet and rocketed out of there to the only place open at 1:45 AM, Dunkin Donuts, and we sat there and stared at each other drinking coffee, speechless. That was 1972, imagine that I got a 9 year old car with 66,000 miles on it for $65. Anyways. what I was going to say is the next time I see Elmer is at the VA hospital over 30 years later, drooling from a wheelchair he recognizes me right off and says Mark, the aliens, they ate my brain. He heard one word from nowhere and it tore his reality to shreds. There is a very good reason you have the illusion of space-2019 running your operating functions.
This episode had a peculiar amount of background music for the series. Usually, "One Step Beyond" episodes didn't have anything other than the "Oh, it's creepy time" theme and the opening and closing themes. The music at the end is ripped off from a famous tune, but I can't place it.

Nice '57 Desoto convertible . Worth a fortune today.
Wow the acting in the scene where her mom comes to see her is epic. You don't see that too often.
She did a great job and when Karen first took over her eyes really did look different

Damn, that actress is amazing! I felt every bit of her fear and desperation. I hope that young lady went far in the industry - she was great!
That was when TV had class, a story line
Agreed. Sad to say, those days are gone forever. I really loved this show -- it was my all-time favorite.
The music makes it so creepy just sitting the car driving. Old shows didn’t need all the crazy images to hook you into another world.

I think it's a Desoto Adventurer convertible. It's the only one I've found with the round medalion on the side trim.
Lol, I thought I recognized her. That was one of my favorite B movies ever! Highly recommended if you like that sort of thing 😉
You are correct, I have the video clip of Virginia in the film ,The Brain That Wouldn't Die,strange now I see her in One Step Beyond.

Found this series by accident. Since watching a single episode, I've been hooked. Would be nice if they made shows like this today😊
Great story, and a lovely ending. Great example of typical 1950's acting. Really enjoyed that, thanks for uploading :D
👏🏼 I must say, that was some superb acting
