It's kinda sad knowing that the Protagonist sees a stranger when they meet, but Neil sees a friend he knows for years, and knows that their time together is very limited.

Neil doesn't know he's going to die until the last mission. For him, that's still the future. Obviously someone could have told him what happened in the future (Neil's past), but no reason in-universe to assume that happened.

@@smaller_cathedrals I think more than the cast, it was the characters who weren’t that well-written. Also, I agree with the “Inception” comparison. The entire cast in that movie was solid. They sold the shit out of half-baked characters. Not all actors can be that way, unfortunately. And in Tenet’s case, I believe the cast was pretty good. Honestly, what I find really compelling about Tenet is that last bit the Protagonist says. Does being here, being alive, mean that they succeed? Fatalism is always painted as very pessimistic and bleak, but imagine how much of a confidence boost it would be to know your actions will matter. Self-actualization in Tenet is made literal; by the Protag working for himself. If you work for your future, your future will work for you.

Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige"."

Robert Pattinson was the only actor asked to die his hair blonde for the movie. Elizabeth Debicki and her character, Kat were natural blondes. At the beginning of their meeting in Mumbai, Neil asks the protagonist if he would take a woman and a child hostage to which the protagonist replied “if I have to”.
Only 3 people knew that the protagonist would travel to London to “see Kat from afar” : the protagonist, Kat and Max. There is no feasible way Neil would know this if he hadn’t already known what was going to happen/ he was there. Neil has the same accent as Kat, he speaks Estonian like Sator. The main motivation for Kat’s character is her son, Max and guaranteeing his safety. At the end Neil said that he knew the protagonist for far longer than he let on, which would imply the protagonist went back in time and recruited Neil for Tenet so the events in the movie could play out. Priya told the protagonist that he isn’t the only one, there’s a second protagonist travelling in the opposite direction to JDW’s protagonist, the only person doing that is Neil. This whole movie is a temporal pincer, hence every character we see on screen must have some part to play. Therefore, I believe that Neil is Kat’s son who was trained by the protagonist for TENET.

Being confined in a container with breathable reverse air and travel back 10 days is tough but practical. Especially when you are going to save the world. But inverting back in time for many years? How practical is that ? There is nothing in the storyline that points to an alternative way.
That is why I am not sure of the 'Neil is Max (Kat's son)' theory.
Even the theory that the protagonist travelled back (to before the movie's events) and recruited a young physics major (who is not Max) will hit the same impracticality.
Is it possible that an older protagonist in future starts Tenet and communicate with a younger Neil (in the past) just like how the future was communicating with Sator?
Is it then likely they actually met each other for the first time in Mumbai while they order Diet Code /Soda Water?
This is my theory for today.
Next week I will come up another one after I move through another temporal pincer.

Tangent inbound. The way I see Tenet(and movie overall) is as an organization that all members are at different stages of their tenure with every mission being a different loop/cycle for everyone. It's also why I believe that everyone in the organization is the protagonist at one point. Neil and the Protagonist relationship is like a palindrome where ones beginning while another is ending and they're meeting in the middle with the same amount of information. The first time, this is the Protagonist movie and we the audience are along for the ride figuring out their mission, how the world works and trying to get a hang of things. Ultimately, you come to an understanding but you're still missing quite a bit of context and left leaving it up to faith. The second time around, you realize it's Neil's movie and he's the real Protagonist in the sense of this loop/cylce. He is the most informed and confident in his ability to complete this mission because of everything he's already experienced it in a way.

For those theorising about Neil being Kat’s son - I’ve been thinking more and more about this little idea I had recently, expanding the canon of Tenet so to speak. What if Tenet’s most trusted and secret operatives are given the option of a “new life” (they’re only told that they will never be physically able to return to their old life). This choice turns out to be a debt of inversion time - far enough back that no matter what you do, you’ll never reach the day you inverted in the first place. These operatives end up being the most deeply embedded Tenet agents (as they’ve travelled back further than nearly anyone) and all will die in their own “past”. I personally think Neil made this choice after being urged to by The Protagonist (10-15 years down the line when Neil is a young man, freshly recruited into Tenet). Along his way back through time he has some stop offs and some “good times” getting up to “some stuff” with The Protagonist so ultimately he doesn’t pay his inversion debt (dying only 10-15 years into his inversion - which is a possibility of the job).
I’m sure I’m missing plenty that would mean this idea doesn’t really work for whatever reason but I thought it was interesting.

It's interesting to see how different perspectives people have on Max being the Neil's younger version.
Some look at it from a logical point of view.
Some look at it from a emotional point of view.
While I'm an emotionally driven individual as well but I'm also from filmmaking, and I assure people seeing it from emotional point of view to not define Neil's calmness towards her mom being shot (even if she is actually) as the proof of Neil not being his son. It's pretty evident that Neil all along knew her mother is going to be saved. He trusts on time. The time they are going to travel backwards in the airport scene. The calmness was also due to the fact that there are not many close-up shots of Neil which will give you the slightest expression or even pain in eyes as what it's being said. But it is Neil who took care of Kat more than protagonist. So, emotional individuals, even if you're putting forward that Neil seems to don't care about his mother, then don't go on what is represented (he being calm and ignorant), rather go on what is being done (he taking care of her and concerned that protagonist must succeed so everyone's saved, including his mom).
Personal theory to emotional individuals: when you tend to grow up and become mature, a healthy individual (no mental disorders and disturbances in function) always approach situations with rather more subtlety in gestures, attentive in required actions while also being fully expressive as well at moments. You're not going out of emotional charge, rather you're more aware of the situation and your present surroundings.
Moreover, how Neil not panicking about her mom being shot seems totally irrelevant to what journey Neil have with protagonist after movie ends, because theory proves that Neil lead a happy life with protagonist as well as his mother until he goes backwards in time. He's aware of what's going to happen.
