GIRL: The way they’re walking is so cute!
DENJIRO: The dogs start to take steps and walk. The dogs are made with thick paper. You simply cut the paper like this and bend the legs. Add the head and tail, and you’re done. It’s actually just the front legs that are moving. The hind legs are just supporting the body. So why do these dogs walk down a hill?
In order to demonstrate, I have here a model that walks on two legs, made with a rod and two freely moving legs. Let me place it on this hill. It’s walking now. Since the ground is able to move upward, by adjusting the speed of the ground and the model, you can keep the model walking at one spot to observe.
If we take a close look, we see that it sways sideways as it walks. When it tilts to the left, the weight is put on the left leg, and the left leg stops moving due to friction. When this happens, the right leg moves forward due to gravity, and now the model tilts to the right. Now, weight is applied to the right leg, and it stops moving due to friction. When the left leg moves forward, it tilts to the left yet again. The toy is able to walk by repeating this motion.
Humans too, sway from side to side as they walk. With humans, when weight is applied to either of the legs, they bring their other leg out. With the toy dog on the other hand, since it was walking down a hill, the feet moved forward due to gravity as it swayed left to right.
Since the toy dog used gravity to walk, if we attach a piece of string with a weight on it and drop it from the side of the table, we can make it walk on a flat surface. You’d think it’s going to fall off the table, but the dogs stop at the edge. That’s because at the edge of the table, the force of the string goes straight down. That’s why the dogs stopped.
