Big Waves in Marquette, and a Couple Rocks, Too

- Nancy and I drove up to Marquette to visit my sister and brother in law. The plan was to see fall colors on the way and to make a video while we were there. We were a little late for great colors and the weather was forecast to be terrible. Saturday turned out to be a nice day, but really windy, so we headed to the Presque Isle Park and filmed the big waves.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

The waves are just beautiful. Even the sound is lovely. Thank you for letting us join you on your adventures.
The sound is never great when it's that windy. I put a lot of effort into trying to block the microphone from the wind.
@@MichiganRocks Thank You for that. ☺
Nailed that slow mo wave burst!! Sweet!
Another wonderful family show.. great stuff
Beautiful place on a beautiful day. I'll be up around Charlevoix for a week, last few days of October and the first few of November. It will be a landscape photography trip, but always wind up doing a little rock hounding. Grew up spending summers at a beach house just south of Port Sanilac, so it's now in the DNA I guess.
We saw several photographers there that day, with their giant lenses. Great day for it.
The scenery is so beautiful, really enjoyed the video!
The waves looked so much bigger in person.
Beautiful locations, specially the second one. Gorgeous.
I love that place.
Love those waves
Those waves are absolutely mesmerizing! I could sit there and watch them for hours! The brilliant blue water, combined with the raw power and pure chaos of the waves, are certainly a sight to behold!
Thank you for letting us share this experience with you, Rob!
We were there for two or three hours and it didn't get old. My sister sent me a couple short videos of the waves today that were a little bigger.
Great Thanks
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I hope to get to the beautiful beaches of Michigan next summer.
Totally gorgeous!
Even though I missed the rock finds, the water, waves and boulders are absolutely stunning.
Filming waves wasn't my intention when going up there for the weekend, but that's what Mother Nature hand in mind, so that's what I filmed.
Just beautiful! Some day I will make it up there. Tomorrow is the Rock and Mineral Show in S.E. Michigan. I'm hoping to get some good finds!😁
Have fun at the rock show. I went last year.
🙋♀️❤️ Gorgeous Footage! What a magnificent day! Great wooden sea horse Nancy!
Family rock hounding fun
My wife and I were in that same spot on October 1. We went to many spots that were in your videos. Including crisp point. The gravel road was terrible chatter bumps but we made it in our camry. lol we love your channel and it was your videos that inspired us to spend 9 days in the UP. We went to rock shop in Norway and told them your videos convinced us visit. The weather was so perfect the whole week it was unreal. Thank you
How were the colors? We went up there last weekend with three goals in mind:
-visit my sister and brother in law
-enjoy the fall colors on the way up and back
-make a rock hunting video
We had rainy weather on the way up and the colors were not great. A lot of the leaves were already down. The video turned out to be something different than I expected, but I had a lot of fun with the waves. We waited for 2.5 hours to cross the bridge on the way home. Not a bad trip, but some unexpected things along the way.
Awwwww! I love Marquette! My uncle is a retired cop so no shenanigans, now 🤣
North Carolina is so nice this time of year but I miss Superior. I think plans for me and her are July and August 😊
You guys went to a beautiful place and just WOW 🥰😍
We are up there at least a couple times a year. We never get tired of it.
👁👁 beautiful Michigan filled with nature 🪨🪨🪨🪨👏👏 8:18
Oh! Sorry you got here on such a windy day! The island is home to a lot of agates, but they are mostly seam agates formed in the sandstone, so they tend to be super dirty, and like you said, very picked over. If you go to the beach behind the YMCA it is littered with rocks and those are from the dead river falls basin area. The little river coming out behind the ymca with that tiny bridge was where the dead river used to empty out of as it's primary flow until they placed the dams diverting the primary flow to its exit closer to the island. But the beach behind the YMCA has some really great agates if you can go in the water where people haven't picked much. I'm a lapidary here and I have cut some amazing cabs from agates I found on that beach.
Thanks for the tip! I have not done much agate hunting in the Marquette area, even though I'm there a couple times a year. It seems like it's mostly sand. I have scanned the beaches to the west on Google maps but have never found much that looked promising. I'll check out the YMCA next time I'm up there.
Edit: I just looked up the YMCA on Google Maps. That's where we hunted a couple years ago when I made my first video there. Nancy found a small agate and we found some really nice slag glass too.
@@MichiganRocks yeah, the key is to go in the water there, it gets picked pretty hard on land but I also tend to look in the winter. The placement of the beach makes it avoid being iced over for a surprisingly long time in the winter. It didn't have any ice shelf buildup until the end of February last year.
I miss visiting Marquette. That scenery is amazing! The blue sky, huge waves, puffy clouds, black cliffs. It would make a spectacular painting! Thank you for risking the elements to get this video.
It wasn't that risky. The spot by the breakwall was actually pretty sheltered from the wind and the other spots weren't all that cold. That was fun to see. The waves looked much bigger in person, of course.
Beautiful!!! 🤗♥️👍
Wind has a way of creating an angry sea.
Nice hunt!
I. Love that Marquette 😊
Those waves are so awesome to look at for sure ! The tiny drift wood Nancy found is so cute and it does look like a seahorse 😊
Beautiful ❤️
We Michiganders are so lucky to live here! The beauty of our Great Lakes all year round soothes the soul. What a beautiful day you guys had yesterday. That slow motion video looked like a big cloud coming in and changing to a spectacular spray of crashing sparkles.
We sure are lucky. I love this state.
Mr Rob, you create some amazing
Videos!!! The waves were beautiful!!!
Gorgeous! Thanks Rob. I always enjoy visits to my favorite lake.
That is a really beautiful place! The waves and sound of them are very relaxing. 😊
The colours are so beautiful and the sound of the waves wonderful. I live by the Solent in U.K. and I never get tired of hearing the waves.🌊
It's a great sound. Both the small, lapping waves and the huge crashing ones are nice.
Yay another video, also amazing spot to rock hound
Loved the waves! Beautiful. Thanks. Suzy
Thank You! That was absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful, incredible scenery! I loved the slow-motion wave!
That was so beautiful, thank you for sharing Rob. Nancy’s first find (before the spray) looked like a thick chunk of bacon. I liked that green marbled rock you found.
It's surprising how many agates look like bacon.
Very pretty beach! The waves looked really awesome. 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Home ❤
Great photography, Rob.
Absolutely beautiful video. I could watch those waves for hours. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Beautiful images, you do have a talent of filming scenery, so much so that many of us wish they could be there too! Too bad it’s so far lol
It's hard to get good audio with all that wind.
@@MichiganRocks you did just fine
Wow, those waves are huge...the big lake is awesome.
Beautiful weather and company!
Lake Superior can generate some huge waves! We’ve sat at Canal Park in Duluth, MN a few times and the waves would come up over the break wall and splash our car. I love watching and listening to the water. It’s like being at the ocean without the crowds. Thanks for sharing your fun trip with us❤
There were actually quite a few people there that day, watching the waves.
Really pretty out there. Refreshing! Thanks.
That was absolutely gorgeous!! I live near the Atlantic Ocean and am used to seeing big waves, but what a treat to see them on your stunning beaches! Thanks for sharing 😊
Big waves are just fun, no matter where they are.
What a beautiful day for filming the waves and shoreline, very scenic. Looks like you got a bit of experience with sneaker waves. That piece of wood that Nancy found is sometimes called a river tooth. It's the base of a tree branch that has been worn down by water to its very sappy interior which is much harder than the outer wood. It makes a good fire starter on a cold wet day. I like your green something or other that you found. Great video!
Thanks, Gwynn! I have never heard of a river tooth. I'll try to remember that.
@@MichiganRocks River teeth that I found over 20 years ago still decorate my gardens. I think they're cool.
Always look forward to when you release a new video...I love the neat piece of driftwood! That's right up my alley! Awesome footage of the waves...it was like something you would see in a movie!
A movie without much of a plot, but thanks!
Those waves were all the plot you needed! Mesmerizing!
My absolute favorite place to visit. Such a beautiful area
Yes I love it there.
I live 5 mins from there. It's an amazing place to swim in the summertime
I have never jumped off the rocks there, but I have watched lots of other people jump.
The waves are mesmerizing
That driftwood was very cool Nancy. 🙂
Stunning!!! Thank you.
Lake Michigan looks like it could be another ocean. 😊
Great finds.
This was Lake Superior, but Lake Michigan gets really rough too.
:) we want to get up there... debating still
Thanks for sharing Rob!!!
Cooool last time i was in Marquette we found some Carnelian Agates. 😎❤️ I love am hour away from Marquette.
It's a great town. I love going there.
Beautiful!!!
Waves,i just love waves❤ and the sound of them.could watch and listen that whole day .uuu, and the stipey rock place😍.i would have collect my pockets full of them😂
I tried to save you the trouble. I didn't take pockets full, but I brought home several that disappointed me greatly.
@@MichiganRocks i would have kept them as they are😁.just a stripey pile of awesomeness❤😂
Such beautiful water and shoreline! I enjoy your videos and this one was excellent.
Thanks, Chance.
What a beautiful place. I'd enjoy being there even if I didn't find a single rock. 🙂
I didn't really care about rocks that day. The waves were the show.
Wat a noisy tour, really hard wind. A pity those beutiful rocks with those nice patterns at 6.29 do`nt tumble well, me too love colors and nice and exciting patterns. Good to be out anyway though. We have hard storms in the south coast of Sweden right now, I have a LOT of huge spruces close to my house, so I am scared because a few years ago in a storm, seven of them went down, luckily, all right outside my fence. Thank`s for the trip and I hope Nancy did`nt get to wet
It's always a shame when a big wind takes down some old, beautiful trees. We have some trees really close to the house, so I often think about what a mess it would be if one landed on it.
I love Presque Isle and Black Rocks! I have taken videos there also of the big waves. Thank you for sharing.
It's a beautiful park.
You guys are so brave!
The wave breaking reminds me of video of ocean waves breaking. Nice video
Waves on Lake Superior can get huge.
That’s one of the most beautiful places you’ve taken us.
I don't know what took me so long. I go there every year at least once.
Such beautiful scenery! Being originally from Southern California I’m always amazed to see waves on a lake as well as the evergreens. Thanks for sharing!
This isn't your average lake. The waves can get huge here. Check out this video from the same location: th-cam.com/video/JaIuK5mzImI/w-d-xo.html
@@MichiganRocks Thank you sir. I’ll check it out. And I agree, those lakes behave more like an ocean.
I was there last Sat and hit the breakwall area looking almost as soon as it was light enough to see. I found quite a few agates but the longer I stayed the more people came to see all the waves as well. The waves brought in some good ones. I have found that the rocks closer to the water do get picked over, so when it's like that, I find some closer to stairs. I also got hit with some waves at the cove at black rocks. Another place to look while in the area is behind the blue house kitty corner from the Pavilion. Lots of seam agates in that area.
That was the same day we were there, but we got there around 11:00, I think. I had given up on making a video because the weather predictions were really bad. It was supposed to be raining all day, but it ended up to be a beautiful morning. I'll check out that other beach next time I'm there.
You're lucky you have access to that beautiful area!
That's an almost five hour drive, but it's a nice drive. I'm glad to live where I do.
It's so beautiful and the sound of the waves!! I'm here in AZ THINKING WILL IT EVER COOL OFF!!!
It sure has cooled off here. It's not cold yet, but it's definitely jacket season.
Thank you for sharing. I miss hearing the ocean and waves since I moved back to Indiana from the Seattle area and also Alaska.
You could always take a drive to Lake Michigan for a taste of that wave action.
wow the waves are huge
I visited the park back in June, after not having gone to the UP in…almost 15 years. It was cold and rainy but it was still so pretty!
Sounds like the week I was rock hunting in the eastern U.P. It was cold and rainy for the four days we were up there in the middle of June.
What a beautiful day! I squinted a bit and saw Canada! I half expected to see a herd of seals on those rocks.
Canada isn't quite that close, but not too far off.
@@MichiganRocks I see what I see lol. Growing up in Cleveland, I used to swear to my parents that I could see Canada when we'd go to Lake Erie. I have a creative imagination ;)
Wow we were up there 2 weeks ago. We had a beautiful week.😊
That's when we were there. I filmed this on Saturday, Oct. 7.
Absolutely love those waves. I'm going to have to make a trip up to the UP very soon. I so need to go rockhounding again. This was a great video. I could sit and watch the waves all day.
Doreen sent me a video today with even bigger waves.
@MichiganRocks wow thats cool.
Nancy’s first little stone looked like pork belly 😋. Your green something or other is pretty. The waves hitting the rocks…stunning. I could nap all day to that in the background. Love the driftwood seahorse too
It was sort of loud and windy for a nap. You'd want to take it way back from the water or you'd be likely to get a refreshing wake up.
@@MichiganRocks 😂
It’s beautiful there.
Sure is.
Lovely, I thought you’d have those scoopers always packed. Second to the last things in the car.😊
Would Nancy and I be the last things?
Had you not shown the signage or said where you were… you would have a hard time convincing me this wasn’t the Oregon coast! Such a beautiful place to spend time with family!
The Oregon coast must be beautiful.
Great High quality video! I’ve learned a lot from your videos
Fun to see the Big Lake tempestuous and rambunctious - ironically, it's the same here today, but rather than spume and sea spray the air is choked with dust blowing off the farm fields - in Northern Tasmania. I wouldn't want to be crossing the Strait today in the Spirit, that's for sure! Enjoy!
I had to look that up. The Spirit of Tasmania. Got it.
@@MichiganRocks I have to give you credit for being a great host - thanks for sharing some of this world's very special & not so well-known places with me & the rest of your appreciative audience. Much calmer morning here, thank goodness! Y'all enjoy a smashing day.
"Magate" lol. A perfect word! 🙂
I like it. I find a lot of magates.
Man, the Great Lakes are a beautiful place. If I could speak the language, I’d move up there.
Ha ha! I love Yooper speak.
The sea was angry that day my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.
Loved that show.
So beautiful, it looks like the ocean
Yep, the Great Lakes are pretty huge.
@@MichiganRocks I recently went rock hunting on our largest lake in New Zealand.
It's actually a Supervolcano crater lake.
One of the days it was like glass, the day before, there were waves.
Lots of Rhyolite to be found too.
I made a video of it, if you would like to see it
@@nicolagraynewzealandrockho8976 I might go take a look, but as usual, I'm super busy trying to get the next video done.
@@MichiganRocks oh yay that would so so cool, but don't let it delay the next video 😊😊😊😊
Some of your shots look like Northern California coast, but you are on a lake. Wow. The waves are huge
It's a big lake. Want to see some really big waves? This video was shot at the same location we were at: th-cam.com/video/JaIuK5mzImI/w-d-xo.html
I was at Sable Falls and the Beach afterwards on Saturday and can attest to the ferocious waves as I got water in my 18" high muck boots and I wasn't even close to the water line, waves were coming up nearly to the base of the dunes.
I would have loved to have been in that area after the wind died down. That would probably be a good day for agate hunting.
Forget the kayak, today you needed a surf board
There were several surfers there.
Those things are at least 3 metres tall
We estimated a 6-8 feet, so a little smaller than your estimate. They were big for sure.
Do they still have all the tame deer walking around the park? Thirty years ago everyone would hand feed them. Tame as the neighbors dog.
Beautiful park
I think I remember that from a long time ago. I didn't see any. There used to be a little zoo there too.
Very nice views catching those waves! As I’ve travelled and lived around the world, I’ve told the stories of the Great Lakes and their power. Lots of non-believers, but you’ve got evidence!
This video is nothing. If you want better evidence, show them this: th-cam.com/video/JaIuK5mzImI/w-d-xo.html
Marquette area is one of my fav places. You need to try Jean Kay's pasties when you're there!
I usually eat my sister's cooking, which is also good. I have been to a couple pasty shops there too, but I don't remember which ones.
😍😍😍
Just think of all the agates those waves were bring in ! Was that recently ? The scenery was absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing !
It was last Saturday. We all really enjoyed the day. Fun waves.
So beautiful but I remember getting nailed by the Irish Sea up to my knees. Not fun. Walking around in wet boots all day. TFS❤️🏏🎸
P.S. in the hundreds here all week 😭
The high temperature here tomorrow is predicted to be half that.
@@MichiganRocks I hate you 😁
Lived in Michigan 20 years I miss the beauty. I live in TX now and it’s a concrete flat jungle here in DFW. Most people who have never been to the mitten associate only Detroit with the state.
I met someone who said that that's what they thought Michigan was. How sad, there's so much more here.
@@MichiganRocks it upsets me honestly. I show them pictures of west coast, UP, Mackinac Island, Silver Lake, and so much more and it’s always the same response. I had no idea!
Heck, as of last week my good buddy here didn’t even know the UP was apart of Michigan. He alway thought Wisconsin lol
Rob, when we’re you there in Marquette? We were there in Marquette on Saturday 10/6 and 10/7 and the waves were huge! We went to Presque Isle on Friday evening and went to the lighthouse on Saturday. It’s an absolutely beautiful place to visit. I did t realize that you could rock hunt on the beaches, wish I looked for rocks there.
We were there last Saturday, the 6th. The waves looked much bigger in person, as I expected. How big would you estimate they were?
@@MichiganRocks They we’re quite large 3-5 feet or higher depending when the wind picked up and the rain storms came in and it started to rain, and then the waves got big. There was surfers at the lighthouse in Marquette surfing on Lake Superior. We met a couple who told us that they were going to go an a Pictured Rock tour in Munising and they shut down all tours for Saturday. Wind gusts were close to 17-35 mph depending on the gust.
@@rebeccatelgenhoff3540 Nancy and I guessed that the bigger ones were 6-8 feet. They were way bigger than three feet, but our estimates might have been a little high. It's hard to tell.
We saw a group of three or four surfers just heading out and one in the water.
@@MichiganRocks I can agree with you Rob about the waves, they were huge, I have seen some huge waves at the Holland state Park 10-15 feet in size in years passed and surfers surfing in those. I call those Surfers Michigan Diehards because they are there get the best Waves at all cost.
Looks like the 'gales of November' came early.
That's what I was thinking. It's amazing how many of the shipwrecks in Thunder Bay went down in November.
Absolutely beautiful place. Maggots 😂😂😂😂
Magates.
epic waves - it's fun & somewhat ocd satisfying to be the 500th like 🌊
Thanks for the thumbs up!
