Actually, it's quite the other way. The F801 paved the way as a camera ahead of its time w/ modern ergonomic feel to what the F5 look would be and where new DSLR followed from. The F4 was 1 in a kind keeping the manual look / feel of the F3 days to satisfy the pros who didn't take to the new F501 & F801's digital look. I moved from an F5 into a new D3S FX and it felt at home. But before then, Coming from an F3P myself , the F4E was amazing, so classic but yet so pro function. I think the F6 didn't get the F5 treatment is the lack of Pro sales in the film scene by then . The D2H was the DSLR to win the pros over from film finally & the D3S made it more clear of the FX future of digital. Congrats on your brilliant camera. (:
The only thing that keeps me from getting a F6, is the price. Way too expensive. But I have a F100 and F5, which did not cost much. And they are awesome.
The F6 is a steep price for a very small bump in performance. I had an f100, as long as you are careful with the film door so the latch wont break it will last a long time.
Man I want that camera now! I didn’t realize how much bigger the F6 is compared to their digital bodies til you held the two up side by side. I NEED THAT!
I always thought the F6 looked ugly with the same design ques as the D2 and D200 with the grey plate around the shutter button. The F5 is far more beautiful looking!
Lovely video! Very informative. How do you find the viewfinder of the F6 compared to that of the F100? I was a bit disappointed when i looked through the F100 eyepiece, it's good, just not as good as people make it to be i think. Is the F6 better in that regard?
I’ve thought about replacing my F100 with one, especially given the fragile film door (I haven’t had an issue… yet), but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Too many other cameras I also want!
I like your review. You got the F6 for a great price! Also, seeing the distance from which you took pictures and seeing the results were a good way for me to gauge the impact of using lenses of various focal lengths. I also have the 105mm f2 DC lens. It was good to see that the bokeh was still good (to my eyes at least) even if you used expired film. Thanks for making this video.
Hello. I follow your TH-cam channel regularly, a little while ago I read an article about the Red Scale film, that Lomography made with Alex Doran and recognized you and your beloved Nikon in one of the photos 🙂 I guess you are friends or acquaintances. How small the world is 🙂
Thank you for your good explanation. I just turned in F6 to the local shop because it couldn't do Auto focue on 50mm G lens like you are using this video. Shoud I always press " Auto on" button with touch of shutter release button together? Or, once, "Auto on" and "again Auto off"?
I wonder if Nikon could add E lens compatibility with a new firmware upgrade. Would this be possible in theory? Or does that need some hardware addon which this F6 camera lacks?
Hey Patrick! In the two years since this video was released, did you send your F6 back to Nikon Tokyo? If so, how was your experience? I’m asking because I just picked up a mint condition F6 with a serial number a little before yours and my version has the battery issue. Also guessing it also has the software issue as well. Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I’m sure at some point I’ll look to send it to Tokyo to get serviced.
You should try shooting that 1974 expired TMax 400 at ISO 100 and pull process it -2 stops... I've been experimenting with old expired film, and in almost every case I need to over-expose it by at least one stop... unless I can be assured it was consistently cold-stored in a freezer, which isn't easy to confirm.
Interesting video. I'm currently investigating buy an F6, so do you have any info on how you get the firmware and battery fixed? Google didn't give me anything...
I just bought one. I mean in the middle of this video. I paused the video and went to eBay and clicked the button. $930US with tax from Japan, 0022xxx serial number. The deciding feature for me was the option to leave the leader out when rewinding. I process my own film and this is a big convenience. I will be using it with a Sigma Art 24-105, I am hoping that the VR will work because it doesn't on my F100.
That VR might not work still. But you can get a 24-105 Nikon f4 used for pennies nowadays and it works fine. I use it travelling. One tip for leaving the leader out, make sure to kink the leader when you take it out so you know which rolls have been shot so you don't shoot it twice.
Leica still makes the MP and MA There’s a decent number of large format makers like intrepid and Linhof. I think the Hy2 Mod6 is still made by Rollei but it’s like 8-10k
@@Dressommer Yes. It has a flip up aperture indicator tab, meaning you can mount pre-ai lenses. On later cameras, you can only mount them if the lenses have been modified.
If people want all of these features but want to pay radically less money buy a Minolta dynax 7 . I’ve had both cameras . Minolta dynax 7 is sleeper camera . Only thing that Nikon has that wins is use of Nikon g lenses which makes it super quite to focus .
I have a Nikon F4 , with physical knobs and switches and buttons , I'll take my F4 over the F5 and 6 , when you buy an F 6 you might as well just buy a digital camera , .. because you're just jumping over the art of using 35 mm my serial number starts with 222 xxxxxx earlier F4 My Nikon 4 it works perfectly
I bought one this week. Autofocus was intermittent and backfocused by a foot! It went back to the shop. Meanwhile, the F100 i bought new in 2000 is still working perfectly, and the F5 I bought secondhand a couple of years ago works fine too. Save yourself some money and buy one of those, or an F4.
I bought an F6 because I want one 👍👏 Good video!
"I bought an F6 because I want one", makes me say good on you! Happy shooting!!

I use my F6 with an 85 f/1.4 for portraits and it nails focus and exposure every time I shoot it wide open. Absolutely love this camera!
It's a beast for sure.
do you have an IG, would like to see F6 and 85 f1.4 samples
Thanks for this super helpful and interesting review video. Learned a lot. Now I want an F6 more than ever!
Excellent info on the Mighty F6! Thanks!!!
The F4 was “crude looking”? Come on now, we all know that’s not true. The F4 is a masterpiece of industrial design with outstanding ergonomics.
the f4 looks like if the f3 patrolled the mojave during a nuclear winter
@@eyeamstrongest you’re right, it’s really badass 👍🏽

Greetings from Chicago. I'm getting to know my F6, and your video was very helpful. Thanks and cheers :)
Can you please do a follow up video how-to-guide to get a Nikon F6 serviced in Japan. Thanks in advance for sharing you knowledge.

There are repair kits on ebay for the f100 film door. It seems to be a guide to file down the door so a replacement metal catch can glued in.

Pretty sure you could always reverse the controls. I know my D300 could and I think my D200 could also back in 2005.

I contacted Japan camera hunter and did it through him.
This is the ONLY film camera that I want…🤤
It's September 2024 and I'm really debating I'd I should pic one of these up. I owned on once and miss the feel in the hands.
hi, dipping back in, a. did you send to japan, how long did the exercise for cla take? b. what was the overall cost please?
It was about 300eur I think. I contacted Japan camera hunter and sent it to him

Just a random question, does anyone knows if there is a brand that still produce new models of film photography besides Lomography??

Wow I really went to buy it but can not find it in South Korea. so sad....
Is it really better than the F100 ?
The 2 best Nikons for lens compatibility are the F4 and Df.
Is the DF more compatible than 780 or D4? Just curious.

I had an f100, it was lovely. I also want all the full set of F cameras so an f5 and f4 are on the cards for about christmas 2032.
One faulty camera is only evidence of one faulty camera.
Who knows what that camera had been through?
Film and film processing is so damn expensive nowadays. They're putting the final nail in film photography's coffin, it's a shame.
Do you have any hobbies?
Many of my other hobbies are more expensive than shooting film, and most are not as fulfilling.
