Our Sony RX100 V has the same overheating problem and is a big problem for any set filming on a tripod when you want to do multiple takes or film longer than a few minutes. It's disappointing that the Panasonic has the same issue. They seem very similar with focus, 4K cropping, and other issues. Frustrating!
The Panasonic LX10 is another alternative to the G7X, but with 4k. It does 15 minutes of 4k at a time, has an f/1.4 aperture at the widest, and is just a little higher than the GX850 in terms of price, but no interchangeable lenses. I've ordered the GX850 to give it a test and compare it to my Panasonic G7, since they use the same lenses, but the LX10 has been a great camera for me so far.

It's a mixed bag. You get 4k capability, but not a lot of people even own 4k monitors/TVs at this point. You get an f/1.4 aperture lens, which helps a lot in low light compared to the f/1.8 on the G7X, but the Panasonic tends to have issues focusing when there's light behind the subject, similar to some of the issues Jared saw in his video here. I've seen it on my LX10, LX100, and even the Panasonic G7 I film most of my videos with. I've done several daily vlogs with the LX10 on my second channel, if you search "LX10 daily vlog" you'll find it.
What manual controls does this camera have ? Any flat color profiles or cinelike d ? Or v like other panasonics . What about manual shutter speed for video? Thanks
So glad you're doing videos like this!! The focus wasn't great but when it was in focus the shots are beautiful! I think thats more down to cameramanship than actual camera though, perhaps not a vlogging camera but a great picture camera??
It is a little shakier than usual, the video quality seems crystal clear, except for when it's having a little trouble with focusing. I'm also noticing that the audio isn't quite as clear as it is on your usual camera. I like it, but personally I prefer your usual camera. That's just my opinions:).
Why is the video so choppy? It's not smooth at all when you start to pan it around or when there are some fast movement. Is it the camera or is it your video editing software?
The quality is superb on this! For stills it's way better than the G7x for sure. For video it looks really good too as long as you get the focus right. The G7x does not do 4k at all so I think it's probably best to compare the 1080 mode on both.
Hi Jared, I'm a faithful subscriber of your family's daily vlogs. When Ellie was playing with Jackson at the beginning of the camera review, I felt motion sick (something I have never experienced while watching your videos). I also didn't think the quality was as clear when you were walking around in the evening. :-) Best of luck on finding the right camera!
Hi great video I'm planning to get this or the newer version to supplement my G9. Do you know if this features clean HDMI output as I'm planning to use it for live streaming
The gx850 had superior image quality(when in focus). The sound quality was pretty much equal. The color was surprisingly better with the gx850, but indoors can have some tough lighting conditions. The stabilization and continous autofocus is better in the canon. I think what you are looking for is the sony a6500 if you can live with the larger size, and a much higher price.
First concern seems to be about the focusing. Seems to take too long to find it's focus. But I noticed if you use the touch screen to touch point on the subject, it seems to be much better. So is that the way to use the focus on this camera? Use the touch screen to quickly touch your subject and then your good to go? As for 4k 4 min limitation, that's a trade off decision for something so small and light. You mention going back to the Canon G7x mark ii, but does not have 4k. Or you go for the bigger, heavier and also more expensive Panasonics. I'm wondering is it because of the light plastic composite body that causes the 4 min limitation heating? A magnesium or aluminum body would definitely dissipate the heat better.
Also on the shakier video, that's because he turned off his electronic stabilizer. Besides turning the electronic stabilizer back on, would it help tremendously if he used a panasonic OIS lens?
When the camera focuses, it looks really nice! But the focus seems very hit or miss, which might get frustrating for you. It also feels shakier than your videos typically are (I don't usually notice any shakiness). The audio is better than the G7X, it feels more realistic, like where are in the room with you.
Don't know a lot about camera's, but for vlogging I like the G7X. Funny how no other company seems to have made one that compares as pretty much all the vloggers I watch use the G7X.
I love the video quality (especially how well the colours showed up) and audio on the GX850 but the focus, stabilisation and video in low light isn't that great.
I'm trying to find a vlogging camera that has good auto focus. I just returned the Canon G7x mark ii. I felt like every time I turned it to my kids or husband talking, they'd be blurry the entire time.
dreamflight6000 I've been back and forth on the Canon G7x. I have a Nikon Coolpix S9900 for vlogging and I like it but I'm too scared to invest in a more expensive camera. haha the struggle is real.
That is funny I felt like this newer camera was constantly in and out of focus. I do see on some Vlogs that happens with the Canon G7X. But it seems less then the Panasonic. Hum..
Excited to watch this! Right now we're using the canon g7x mark 2 for vlogging! We only got it a couple months ago and we love it so far but you said on Twitter that they lose focus over time. So it's good to know other options for the future!
It was definitely shaky and the zoom wasn't great. At first I really didn't like the sound, but then I sorta got use to it. It wasn't that the quality was bad, but I just agree that the one you're using now is so much better!
I think the Panasonic def looks amazing with 4k, but I personally do not like that camera with vlogging purposes, especially with the focus and low light being kind of rough. But thank you for sharing all your thoughts!!
Audio is good and so is the video, but it definietly takes your hand's shaking very sharply and doesn't feel good it you have to stare it for a lonv time. Then again the pervious camera had lazy pixels in the dark and I didn't notice this one to have.
Have you Heard or read anywhere about why 4K causes cameras to overheat? what is it about that setting ?? Fingers crossed that canon comes out with a better option soon! I am very into photography and video and would love to see more videos like this reviewing different cameras and learning more about settings to improve quality !!
Hi Jared, have you tried to transfer 4K videos into an iPhone through WiFi? I noticed that 1080p videos can be transferred through the panasonic image app on iPhone, but not 4K videos :(
The audio kind of sounds muffled and the focus issues messes with my eyes. I watch your daily vlogs and definitely preferred watching the clips shot with the G7 X. :)

Hi Jared I watch ur daily channel and I prefer the Canon also but I might be a bias since I love canon and have really enjoyed there equipment. But hope u find what u r looking for in there cameras but if not good look
I feel like it's great for taking shots. it's extremely clear and u see such intricate details. but I don't think it's good for vlogging because it gets very blurry with movement
I feel like the one you tested out today was a little bit ore wobbled than the vlog camera. Jest like when you vlog on your phone it's really shaky. That's how it is
Aahhh Jared I love your explanations on everything! Makes so much sense for a not so educated camera person like me! I have just ordered a Canon G7X for our vlogs and would love to know the best setting to have it on, and what you guys do for your vlogs & when you change it for different shots etc... would you consider doing a detailed video on what you guys use/do for your everyday vlogs :) Thank you!!
The overheating is bizarre. I can shoot 5 minutes on my Galaxy Note 4 which is nearly three years old, but I wanted to get a proper camera with the expectation that they WOULDN'T have the same overheating issue. :( What good is being able to shoot amazing 4K quality if you don't even have a guarantee on how long you can shoot because it can overheat at any moment?
I think maybe this camera would be great for sit down videos, as the video quality is real good. However, with vlogging I don't think it is the best (in my opinion). It is shaky, and sometimes even choppy and the obvious issues with auto focusing. The low light was not very good as well, as is the Sony camera we use. I want to switch to the G7X but it's too pricey for our audience (400+ subscribers). :( Hoping to expand our channel so I can invest in some decent vlogging items. Anyways, on a side/random note... Jared you are looking SOO skinny! :) thanks for doing this :)
Audio sounded great, but the autofocus and overheating killed it for me. Cropped video difference doesn't matter to me; just know I'd correct my shot placements and adjust as needed. I thought this could've met my needs, but didn't due to shaky autofocus. Regardless, thanks for the review.
I actually like the Lumix audio better. To me, it's brighter and crisper, as opposed to a muffled bass sound. Video quality is good on both options presented. So if I could mesh the Lumix Audio with the Canon Video, I think that'd be ideal.
the video quality really good its just the audio and focas didnt focas as well but it does feel like for me that we were there so im kind of am in the middle
great review thank you. The G7XII was definitely a lot better all around. I was really disappointed with the Panasonic. Price is good, but video like you were doing doesn't cut it. I think especially for families who want good quality video, but don't know much about cameras, it can be a big bummer when they go into post production.
Hello, I brought this camera, and do not know how to fix the crop issue with 1080P. Is there any one know? It annoying when I am shotting. If anyone know please tell me!!!Thank you.
I don't know anything about camera's but when the new camera is actually focusing, it looks great, everythings is very sharp and looks very nice in general but the fact that it doesn't focus that easily is a bit annoying to watch. I'm also wondering if you could reduce the blur in the background when it is focusing on something, because sometimes when you are vlogging the kids will do something funny or cute in the background and it is fun to watch that while you are talking. :)
Not a huge tech person, but the video seems shaky to me as well as the edges of things are not as clear ( not sure if there is focus issues). The audio was fine, but not a huge fan of the overall quality. I do like the canon quality better.
I would agree with the lower rating. Purely thinking about vlogging. The auto focus seemed hit and miss and, like you said, you need to be quick on the draw instead of having to tinker with everything. But you can't deny the picture quality and sound. Both were great and so this camera would be great for more scripted video telling, but the short life span filming in 4k really is a concern. Overall, looks great but for vlogging it's a no from me.
Low light was horrible in my opinion and I agree with most saying that it was much shakier. When you weren't moving, in good light, and had it focused- I liked it but it doesn't seem like a good fit to me.
ha! i knew you weren't going to leave us hanging, jared! 😊 i was waiting for a videotest the whole of the last video 😆 also, i dont feel like this camera can beat the g7x 🙈
definitely more shakey. audio sounds good. when it's focused, it's really really detailed, looks very nice, but seems to take a bit to focus. I think the Canon is better overall. Just my opinion.
So, the audio is nice, there's no big difference between your actual Canon and Panasonic about the audio. I couldn't hear the noises from something in the camera you said we might hear either. Did you do something about it? This camera is good for single shots, like if Ellie would do some makeup tutorial, you with an unboxing video or a time lapse of something. Is a nice camera to film things that are not constantly moving like a person, but its nice to do a time lapse of a beautiful place, but that's it. It's not ideal for vlogging because of the focus. Your focous on the Canon is better. This panasonic is not a vlogging camera. I love your videos in this channel btw. Lot's of love. Keep the nice job xo
I have no knowledge about cameras but I thought that the Quality was great when it focused but it wiggles a Little Bit more and the focus stuggled some times. The audio was Great! I hope this makes sense. I'm from germany 😉
Definitely shakier than the Canon and it struggled a bit with the focus.. audio sounded great and the b-roll stuff especially looked amazing!
i agree with that probebly shaky because the video quality was good
That is exactly what I was thinking!
Gtyyyi
Our Sony RX100 V has the same overheating problem and is a big problem for any set filming on a tripod when you want to do multiple takes or film longer than a few minutes. Great audio Jared. Color changed alot. Good luck !
I want to see this camera with a metabones speedbooster and a nice glass. That would also help with the M4/3 4k cropping issue.
ohhh yep not a fan of the cropped image and time limit on 4k- thank you for showing the pros + cons Jared! i love honest reviews
Hi ! Do a video review about the Nikkon one J5 Please.. the cam shoots 4K .. and theres not plenty reviews yet about that camera. thx
Did you grade this at all? Colors looked good

GX 850 doesn’t have image stabilization, I am confused, what stabilization are you testing?
The quality is really good and so is the sound but it takes a while to focus and shakes a lot

dreamflight6000 hmmm I had the g7x mark 2 and it focuses instantly every time. Day and night. Hopefully it stays that way! 😊
dreamflight6000 I've been back and forth on the Canon G7x. I have a Nikon Coolpix S9900 for vlogging and I like it but I'm too scared to invest in a more expensive camera. haha the struggle is real.

Hahah only 4 minutes in and I hate the focus!
20's 30's and a baby me too the focus is awful!
The g7x mark ii lose focus?
The quality looks amazing! You could see like all the fine details of Penny's hair! Focus isn't the greatest though
I love that your video is so honest and really helped me cause I’m looking for a new vlogging camera
its really nice when you standing still but when you walk its just real shake
I feel like the focus is off and it's kinds shaky
Kinda *
Great review! Would have liked to see and side by side size comparison with the canon. Thanks tho!
Does the GX850 make the same grinding noise the G7X does when recording video?
How's the image stabilization? Audio quality?
can you do a video on tips for vlogging, how to start a channel and all that
So I don't like it but what do you think about the Sony alpha series cameras? A5000 or 5100 to 6000
man the focus is out of this world and mic not that great like the g7x mark 2 but there might be a solution what to you think
How about not using 4k to filming ? How long times the camera will shut down ?
It was definitely shaky and the zoom wasn't great. At first I really didn't like the sound, but then I sorta got use to it. It wasn't that the quality was bad, but I just agree that the one you're using now is so much better!
What is better in photos and vlogging? Lumix gx850 or g7x mark ii?
Does it also overheat if you just stick to 1080p video?
Do you going to use the LUMIX GX850 on the blogs. Love your videos.
In Ellie's video before Hawaii I thought it looked blurry but I wonder if it's ur lights
Audio sound echoed to me
Is there any limitation shooting at 1080p?
Gx850 vs Sony A5100 which one should I get?
I think the Panasonic def looks amazing with 4k, but I personally do not like that camera with vlogging purposes, especially with the focus and low light being kind of rough. But thank you for sharing all your thoughts!!
What is the best camera for staring out in vlogger.
Audio is good and so is the video, but it definietly takes your hand's shaking very sharply and doesn't feel good it you have to stare it for a lonv time. Then again the pervious camera had lazy pixels in the dark and I didn't notice this one to have.
I can't find the 4k video mode for this camera.,
How do you set it up
Great quality! But a little shaky and it's not that wide like you mentioned. Awesome video!
heat problem in 2017? Realy? My Lx100 film 30fps 4k as long as i want. Ok next one please
wow I just came from your other video and was looking for the video test on youtube and this just went live!! haha perfect timing !! :)
Have you Heard or read anywhere about why 4K causes cameras to overheat? what is it about that setting ?? Fingers crossed that canon comes out with a better option soon! I am very into photography and video and would love to see more videos like this reviewing different cameras and learning more about settings to improve quality !!
It doesn't seem to focus right away. But looks like a nice camera
Hi Jared, have you tried to transfer 4K videos into an iPhone through WiFi? I noticed that 1080p videos can be transferred through the panasonic image app on iPhone, but not 4K videos :(
Please do a review on Lumix GF9...
Hi Jared, what do you think about the nikon1 J5?
When the subject wasn't moving too much it looked ok, any movement seemed to really test the ability of the focus though!
The audio kind of sounds muffled and the focus issues messes with my eyes. I watch your daily vlogs and definitely preferred watching the clips shot with the G7 X. :)
while the 4k did look great, the stabilization was no where near what the g7xmarkii is, the audio sounded fine to me, but i just dont think it compares for the vlogging point and shoot style camera.
Right now we vlog with our Iphone 7 plus on a stabilizing grip because we cant afford the g7x mark ii yet, so hopefully by the time the next camera comes out we can get that to up our vlogging game ;)
There is definitely a difference!!!! I don't like it as much with movement, but when you did still and slow shots it was good!
Can you record and charge at the same time
Hi Jared I watch ur daily channel and I prefer the Canon also but I might be a bias since I love canon and have really enjoyed there equipment.
I have just ordered a Canon G7X for our vlogs and would love to know the best setting to have it on, and what you guys do for your vlogs & when you change it for different shots etc... would you consider doing a detailed video on what you guys use/do for your everyday vlogs :)
Thank you!!
The sound is kind of echo-y, not as comfortable to listen to. A little shaky too, but when it focuses the picture is beautiful!
The overheating is bizarre. I can shoot 5 minutes on my Galaxy Note 4 which is nearly three years old, but I wanted to get a proper camera with the expectation that they WOULDN'T have the same overheating issue. :(
What good is being able to shoot amazing 4K quality if you don't even have a guarantee on how long you can shoot because it can overheat at any moment?
Seeing the rest of your family, I felt like I got to watch two vlogs today.
I think maybe this camera would be great for sit down videos, as the video quality is real good. However, with vlogging I don't think it is the best (in my opinion). Great audio Jared. Color changed alot.
It had a hard time focusing and made good for a stand still shot, this camera may be good for your personal channels that aren't vlogging
I like the camera you have been using much better than the new one.
the focus, it is a little shaky. the audio to me sounded ehcoy when you were vlogging
Hi jared, can you please do a nikon 1 j5 review
Thanks😊
New camera didn't work in the low light
I actually like the Lumix audio better. To me, it's brighter and crisper, as opposed to a muffled bass sound. Video quality is good on both options presented. So if I could mesh the Lumix Audio with the Canon Video, I think that'd be ideal.
In my opinion, the new camera doesn't have very clear audio and the color is a little bit off but it does have nice picture
the video quality really good its just the audio and focas didnt focas as well but it does feel like for me that we were there so im kind of am in the middle
great review thank you. The G7XII was definitely a lot better all around. I was really disappointed with the Panasonic. Price is good, but video like you were doing doesn't cut it. I think especially for families who want good quality video, but don't know much about cameras, it can be a big bummer when they go into post production.

Has anyone seen any good review videos like this for the fujifilm x-a3? I know it doesnt shoot 4k but I've been considering picking it up.
the audio sounds just fine but the quality and focus could be better.
Low light was horrible in my opinion and I agree with most saying that it was much shakier. When you weren't moving, in good light, and had it focused- I liked it but it doesn't seem like a good fit to me.
I agree with your rating! Stick with the Canon G7X Mark II!!
AFC is very poor on Panasonic. I think the Canon M6 is the best, plus mic input but cost twice as much.
ha! i knew you weren't going to leave us hanging, jared! 😊 i was waiting for a videotest the whole of the last video 😆 also, i dont feel like this camera can beat the g7x 🙈
I like the G7x better. It's not as shakey and the it looks better in my opinion
canon fan girl ?
definitely more shakey. audio sounds good. when it's focused, it's really really detailed, looks very nice, but seems to take a bit to focus. I think the Canon is better overall. Just my opinion.

I definitely like the canon g7x mark II better! Loved the video!!
I have no knowledge about cameras but I thought that the Quality was great when it focused but it wiggles a Little Bit more and the focus stuggled some times. The audio was Great!
I hope this makes sense. I'm from germany 😉
