Thank you for discussing leaving caladiums in pots all winter. I left three small plants in 6” pots last winter, but they dried out too much and died. This year I bought 6” potted plants in May, put them in a 13” shared pot, and now put the largest one in it’s own pot. I plan to treat them as I do cannas: put the pots in the garage in September, when weather cools; let them dry out for a month, then put them in the basement for the winter in late October, which stays about 60°. I hope the large pots will be pretty dry, but will retain enough moisture so they don’t dry out and turn crumbly. Wish me luck!

I really like garden experiments. Hope every way you're trying is a winner. Check out Yulia over at Y Garden, she has videos for overwintering several different types of plants.

It is early summer 2024. Did your caladiums survive?

Millipedes started crawling out of the containers in winter so I swiftly tossed them back outside and no longer cared about overwintering them 😆 I do think it would have worked though

I overwintered my Pink Polka Dot plant last winter and grew it in my plant room. I cut it back in the Spring because it got real tall and, it still grew super tall this Summer. Lovin their lives.
Can't wait until Spring to see if you are successful with the Caladiums. Love how you research.

It’s fun to have these experiments to keep me busy over winter 😆

I'm doing the same with my caladiums, fingers crossed to both of us! What method do you use to press flowers? I've been researching it because I'd like to start, but I'm finding so many options and am not sure what people find most successful.

I have a flower presser from Amazon and I just throw the flowers in it! I can’t find one large enough for what I want though so I might try to make my own this winter.

Great experiment. I've only tried to overwinter caladiums once, storing them in their pot in an unheated garage and they did not come back. Based on your research, it must've been too cold. The houseplant idea is a good one. I'm curious to see if it works.

Good luck! Are you planning to de-eye any surviving caladiums, before the next growing season?

Probably not bc mine are already planted so close together I don’t think I want them to be any fuller 😆
