Every year we buy one decoration for the tree and it’s a really fun tradition to look at the baubles from each year and make memories. The tree may not have a ‘colour scheme’ but it is really meaningful to us. The decoration for this year is for our adopted cat Atia celebrating her forever home, it is made from wood so will last and is supporting a small business on Etsy 😻 x

You are so right with all of this. Spending time together is much more important than gifts nobody really needs. My brother and I decided not to do presents but we are getting all the family together for a meal and to me that is priceless I am so excited at the thought of us all being together.

I agree with some of your comments and points to making a more healthy happy home. However my children love Xmas and I love( once a year ) giving them the best day. We put our decorations up nice and early to get the most out of Xmas and the spending side! With everything said it almost feels like the fun Is being taken out of it ! Remember it's only once a year. These to me are all memories I hope my children will look back and love ❤️

I buy my mum a Christmas bauble every year for the last 15 years either from my city or my travels, so she now has baubles from NYC, Chicago, The White House, NASA, Florence, Paris, Edinburgh and every landmark in London. Her tree is like a travel journal and she loves it when people ask about all the decorations!

Such an important message; you're spot-on as usual! There's so much waste at Christmas. People seem to forget that spending time with loved ones is far more important than flashy gifts and decor - now more than ever.
Re-using wrapping paper and gift bags has become a running joke in our family. It's very scandalous when someone actually writes on the label so it has to be removed! 😆

Really great thought went into this 🤗. I love uding a gift to wrap a gift so towels or scarfs. I decorate gifts but with either natural sprigs and pinecones, but my favourite part of gifts growing up from my Uncle-Dad and Auntie were the ornaments she tied on. I have all of this to this day and it makes for great memories 🥰. I have made my own candles for decades now not just to use natural materials but because the scents are also synthetic and toxic. So I am glad you’re making the switch! 🎉. I do a ritual gingerbread. I work with it as a symbol of the home and energies I want to bring in and let go of in the new year. Using herbs and natural materials and even crystals. Since most of what I use are natural materials (minus the crystals) I can leave it in the garden for the critters! So many more ideas you had were brilliant (as always) but I promised to keep my comments shorter 😅🤗🙏🏽🥰

Loving your thoughts on Christmas and moving forward in your life.
My decorations and baubles are all full of memories. My tree is decorated with ornaments that belonged to great grandparents, grandparents and my mother. I always decorate my tree alone, it’s so sentimental and my memories of putting the decorations onto the tree as a child make me cry with pure love and joy. It’s so easy to get carried along with the Xmas hype, resist, build loving memories ❤

I made a pledge to myself at the beginning of this year not to wrap gifts and birthday presents and so far I have done it. It's only a small change but I'm so proud of myself. I use the retailers own wrapping as I try and buy all my gifts off etsy or small local business. Nobody has minded, in fact most are impressed that I've managed to keep it up.

If the Christmas Vlog mess is too stressful for you then don’t do it at all. It’s really that simple, people won’t hate you for it and now they will understand why you are not doing it at all. What you are doing is you are expanding your audience to include other social media environments. Reduce the stress of yourself and do not participate in Instagram or TikTok.

This year, I abandoned using junky dollar store gift bags. I will be using brown packaging paper instead. I saw a cute idea that I am doing, instead of gift tags, I printed old photos in black and white with my printer of the people the gifts are for in black and white, and adhered them to white card stock, using double sided tape, then cut them out. They look so good with the brown paper and red bakers string with a baked orange slice ( was so easy to make) and a cinnamon stick in the bow. I also made several molded beeswax candles which everyone loves. You can buy great molds on Etsy. Salt and flour gingerbread men last for years, once painted and make cute decorations with natural garlands. Oooh....you get me going girl when we start thinking NATURAL!!!🎄

Wonderful message Kay. I have had a very challenging year this year and it has been exhausting. Having said that, the intentional changes I have made is making life easier. Christmas is my favourite time of the year and , like you I had decided to be more mindful of the gifts I am giving . I asked people what they would like and really thought about what I wanted ( which wasn't anything really) or what I needed ( which turned out to be sunglasses and underwear lol) . My Christmas shopping is now done. I dont need to go anywhere near a shopping mall during December and I can really enjoy wrapping each gift without the chaos of past years ( which was usually christmas eve when everyone was in bed) I'm looking forward to the calm and setting the pace for the coming year. Life is a journey not a destination right? Merry Christmas.

I have the same feelings as you. My husband and I always buy whatever we need throughout the year so we never want or need anything for Christmas. This year we did buy ourselves a new TV on black Friday because we have been needing to replace the one we have. So that is our gift to each other this time. My kids are in their 20's so they are getting a few clothing items and gift cards to restaurants and then some everyday consumables that they will use. (deodorant, laundry soap etc. ) I made some small bottles of homemade vanilla extract to give to friends and family members along with some jam and then I am making homemade cinnamon rolls to go along with that. I purchased books for all of the little ones in the family because I know their parents will greatly appreciate it. LOL I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

I agree with all you have said. It is so easy to get swept up with the expectations shown to us by those clever marketing people. We need to make a plan ahead of time, ask what gifts people would like, or better, suggest an experience that may cost the same amount or a little more, but will make priceless memories. None of my family buy for each other, we all agreed many years ago to stop this, we are all adults, but we do buy 'for no reason' gifts at any time of year if we see something we know a certain person would enjoy. This has taken a huge amount of pressure off of us all and we actually look forward to Christmas. xx

This video theme really hits home for me. I'm trying so hard to be more intentional with my shopping.
More thinking beforehand about what I buy and consume.
Saving money and the planet has become so important to me. I've cleaned out all the *junk* from my home, I no longer shop retail, and I think before I buy.
I strictly shop goodwill, charity and second hand shops. I also donate regularly too.
Less stuff definitely is freeing and clears the mind. I now shop quality over quantity.

Slow and intentional - key words for Xmas or any time of the year, celebrating life, family and friendship.
For me November means loss, death: five years ago my children and this year my closest uncle and my father-in-law.
My mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October. So, planning and living a slow and very intentional Xmas, New Year and whatever season we are in.
    Nothing else is crucial. 💙

I completely agree, we spent a lot on Christmas food, definitely more snacks and food than was needed for the day. some of it did get wasted unfortunately. Some I managed to use in another meal and for sandwiches.
Last year and family and I gave each other money as we were and still are saving for different things.
I started using scarves, Christmas blankets to wrap presents up in if needed as it serves as a practical aid to keep warm and it’s easy to use to wrap things in. I use a hamper basket to transport gifts around in, it’s only been over the past year I’ve started doing it.
Watching this whilst I’m recovering from the winter bug. You are amazing xx

I reuse wrapping paper and cut up Christmas cards for tags. I also buy consumables and experiences over things. I buy Christmas jumpers etc from charity shops and re-wear them. We have had our Christmas tree for over 30 years (it was from John Lewis that I bought in the sales) and I buy a holly wreath every year from our local small family owned garden centre. I have never themed my tree but have collected my ornaments over the years -some on our travels and some for meaningful occasions. The Christmas fairy that sits on top of our tree was my parents and is over 80 years old now! Candles are my problem as I struggle to spend a lot on something I am going to burn so sustainable ones seem so expensive. I am really craving a simpler Christmas this year.

Christmas is my favourite time of year, after 30 years of raising a family we dont buy new decorations unless we get them as gifts, we have red gold green silver and white, all very traditional, our lights are all low usage energy saving ones, as a family we reuse bags for presents which is better for environment and cost effective. Our lights outside are all solar powered and yes they work still even in decmeber. Presents are bought a few each month and put away in that persons gift bag so by October I'm all done. I like to buy gifts from craft fairs , school fairs charity shops etc. I bake a lot of goods too for gifts. I like the giving aspect of Christmas. Looking forward to your vlogmas x

You mentioned that you put together goodies that you put in a hamper for a gift. I suggest that if the person does not need a hamper use a cardboard box covered with brown craft paper. If the person is a sewer, wrap the box in fabric, not glued onto the box.
I only purchase food that we will eat. Also, if there is food left over and it can be put into the freezer for later consumption, I freeze it. We do eat and try to eat all of our leftovers; usually, nothing goes to waste. If it does go bad before we eat it which occasionally happens, I put it in a compost bin and then into the outside composting which I will later use in my garden.
I occasionally go what is called dumpster diving. I do not know if you have them in the United Kingdom. They are very large bins on wheels that hold enough for a lot of families and are picked up weekly or biweekly. Outside of the dumpsters I have found furniture. Inside (I use gloves) I have found clothing, kitchen items, decorations, towels, sheets, and much more. I am amazed at what I find and sad that people are so wasteful. Occasionally I find some items put out for free. Whatever I don't need I put out in front of my home for free. I think it is better to take these items than they go to the landfill. I also recycle whatever I can.
I live in Bakersfield, California, USA. You call them trolleys and we call them shopping carts in the western states. In eastern & southern America they are also called trolleys.
Thank you for a great video. You have got me thinking and I thank you for this. Hugs,

I am definitely with you regarding buying presents that have meaning to a person, especially in the economy we live in. I find that buying items that have value and you know that person needs it, even if it's just giving money, is so much better in my opinion, for example for my mum this Christmas I have gotten her a kettle and toaster set because I know she needs brand new kitchen appliances and I would be happy to contribute towards an easier life for her. A really good and timely vlog. My children are all grown now and in fact I am a grandma to two lovely little ones. When our children came along we made a decision that we stay home on Christmas Day. The thought of hauling children away from their toys and out into a cold and snowy Canadian Christmas Day was so unappealing. We were open to people dropping in. As the kids got older we even stopped having Christmas dinner on Christmas Day and moved it to Boxing Day. We continue to do this. We have a nice brunch on Christmas Day and just relax. A great idea for toting your gifts around is a rectangular laundry basket. It works a treat. Merry Christmas 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Even if you are buying new you could try to buy locally made or products made by other companies on Etsy. I really have tried to only buy quality products that would last for a long time and always natural versus classic! It feels so much better to not be part of the throw away society as much as you can be! And I always try to buy second hand quality whenever possible I love the direction your channel is going in! I used to be the girl with a themed and colour-coordinated tree, and nobody else cared… Since we inherited my in-laws‘ decorations, tucked away for years and years (because my MIL wanted a themed, colour-coordinated tree… 🤣) we only use those. Some are over 100 yrs old, they are colourful, faded and some have decades of wax on them from the traditional tree candles always used back in the day, and I add my little collection of personal favourites and gifted ornaments from the last 30 years. Our tree is not huge, it‘s not „trendy“ or „cool“ but it‘s super cute and it doesn‘t matter if a bauble gets broken, they‘re being used 😍
I always have candles on, throughout Advent, and red or white are my usual choices because they work all year round and unscented because members of my family get headaches from scented ones. Way more versatile like this!
We have also pared down the meal to a more manageable range of food - a turkey, roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots, that‘s it (well, gravy…) and I make Delia‘s 5 minute cranberry relish the day before.
And finally, giftwise, I knit stuff for everyone - last year it was thick, warm ribbed hats that I used as place markers on the plates; they looked like puddings 🤣 Gave everyone a laugh. This year it‘s neckwear, just thinking about presentation 😉

If you do have a fake tree then keep using it until it falls apart. That’s much more eco friendly. Yes cheeseboards from supermarkets are always a problem as I guarantee there’ll be something left, that no one likes and you can’t cook with. Buy what you love and treat yourself if you love it, otherwise leave it on the shelf. 😍

I went to an alternative gift wrapping class a couple of years ago. It was very clever eg for a child's present you could wrap it in the pages of a comic, tie with string together with a chocolate bar. For family presents, why not put everyone's name in a hat and take turns to pull a name out. Then you only buy that person a present and you all agree a price limit before hand. So, as you mentioned, you get one really nice present instead of several smaller ones. My daughter made my most treasured tree decoration out of a yoghurt pot and it has been put on my tree for 30 years and is still going strong. X

This was a lovely Video and I hope you inspire people. Stop and take account of what is important in life and focus on that.
I know I certainly made changes in the last few years, trying to be sustainable, cruelty free and intentional and appreciate what I have that costs 0.
I think all these TH-cam videos of influencers decorating 3 trees and decorating for each season are so unnecessary, I get they need content but when the majority of the country is struggling with the current financial situation I wish more influencers wouldn't rely so much on consumerism (hauls and gift guides coming out there's ears) I always wonder where they keep all the stuff as it's always far too much for 1/2 people. Anyway, I dont want to rant as each to their own but well done Kay, I hope you enjoy this new way of being and I hope it brings a lot more calm and happiness 💜❤️

Great video Kay! The advantages of having chickens is that uneaten food goes to them, so no waste and you have the benifits of free range eggs, which I make all kinds of meals such as quiche, cakes etc, which is healthy and saves us alot of money too. Have a nice day.

Totally agree with not just buying any old decoration. I've got ornaments that we have had for 30years one is even 45 years old given to me from my grandpa from his tree. It very tatty but means the world. My tree is 30years old and part of it is broken but that part goes at the back and you can't tell and I love my tree, I don't want to get a new one as it has many memories attached to it .This year we are not buying loads and am supporting crafters.

This is wonderful. If only everyone had this outlook. One thing I try to do before making a purchase is think of the item’s life. I think of the amount of time it will spend being used and enjoyed compared to its slow decay in a landfill.

I can relate to every thing you said and will be doing the same, i have also told people i will be buying less and im using that money to get a trolley full of food and take to the local food bank. Like you say the people dont need another smelly set/chocolates/socks etc and there are people out there who have no food. Its heartbreaking. Im so guilty other years of buying packed plastic sets and no one really needed them. Much more intentional this year and on the lines of NEED not WANT. Love the videos xx

Such valuable and introspective advice! Really every festival is a trigger for mega consumption and mega spending. If we so called wise and educated people don’t take the first step the rest of the world will bear this burden forever. With young influencers like you spreading the right words it will soon be a time when people are turning away from these all-consuming trend. I can already see on you-tube how others like you are also buying only three or four items and re-using their existing stuff this Christmas. Great step to save the world and spend the time in a worthwhile manner.

I love this and it’s so true. The wrapping point, two years ago I bought Kraft boxes from paperchase which I have used twice now, each family member has a box with their name on it, and their gifts go in there. I use twine to close it and make it look pretty, sometimes even the reusable string from my Able and Cole boxes. For gifts I too ask people and if they don’t know they get a mix of their faves in their box. Most adults I know can buy what they want but I always like to give small thoughtful gifts. If they ask me I always say Lego, 😂 as I love it, last year I got the Home Alone House, the whole family join in the build. I love collecting Christmas decorations but no theme, I love felt and knitted things, and I have one from every place I’ve ever been abroad which make it special. Also I have a nativity and a leather tree skirt that I use. I grow eucalyptus and add that to a vase in the room. I have a reusable advent calendar from Gathre that I add things to, including notes, instead of plastic. There are so many wonderful things that can add value to your Christmas when you have heirlooms you can bring out year on year. Food is important but buying quality and organic is essential to me, that supports farmers and is better for your health and the soil. At the end of the day though Christmas is about family and being together to me, and that is always what I look forward to the most.

You made me think of what I was doing and not doing at this time of year. I wear a cast off Christmas jumper of my great nephew who grew out of it a couple of years ago. I did buy a new artificial Christmas tree, I spent a bit more on it and I intend it to last for many years. I'm also making my own natural wreath. I had already texted my daughter this morning to collect some pine and fir cones for me on her walks. I just have to have a think about my wrapping now. 👍 A great vlog. - Frances 👍

I stopped using wrapping paper a few years ago, I just use gift bags because they can be fully reused.
And with my husband we are not getting any presents for each other, because we don't need anything and when we need something we can just buy it without occasion.

I totally agree with sentiments my plastic tree is 25yrs plus lol red green and gold, and i will never buy another one, ive embroiled myself in xmas madness shopping, made myself feel anxious and pressured myself about the idea of what Christmas means , grumbled about other people shopping whilst I've been shopping alongside them listening to the festive xmas music to induce us buy more in the supermarkets. About 5 years ago I decided to live a more simplified intentional life this year we are going to Dent in two weeks time for a 2 night stay instead of giving each other things neither of us really have a need of.

Love this list! I have been giving edible (homemade) gifts or gifts of my time. For example, clean my mom’s house every week since it’s getting to be too much. I find it is way more appreciated than any bauble or physical item. Ps, I love the gingerbread house kits but one day I realized it was making them with my kids when they were little. They are 23 and 18 now. I found myself really wanting to buy one then realized I wanted the memories! So I passed!

We have made presents this year make sense. Not extra. We always buy our elder relatives gift cards to groceries as money can be tight on a fixed income. Good job Kay. Keep up the good work. Hello Kay, I agree,, being together is by far the most important of any gift. However, I am guilty of wrapping, & adding the "extra fluff". Yes for myself, because I hope they know I took time to do so & think of them. I think most adults realize & appreciate the effort of present wrapping..& to the best of my knowledge bows are sorted & reused.. because my mother may we all bless her soul as she RIP, was adamant about saving bows, so my siblings are accustomed to doing so. We are also taught to appreciate a gift no matter what it may be wrapped or not, because it is the thought of gift giving that counts. I have also began giving gifts of consumables even to our 24 & 25 year old son & daughter. Not necessarily homemade, but groceries by theme of breakfast &, dinner, or a gift card to their fav restaurant. Which they seem to love & appreciate. I also make a drink basket of hot cocoa, different coffees & a bottle of their favorite wine, and a movie basket with popcorn & snacks. For the hard to buy people. Usually I give a basket of cheeses, beef or summary sausage, nestled another different packages of crackers, & possibly jars of homemade jams from farmers market, olives or pickles depending on who & if I know what they may like. Even if they don't like something they have it on hand for a board they can put together for visitors. If all else fails, & I have no idea what, or know the best gift is cash to do with whatever they choose. Gingerbread Houses were an annual tradition when our kids were young. As they got older in their own home, they would buy their own but was for display would never eat because they were hard & I was afraid of how long they were boxed, except the candies for embellishments...I have a mold to make & build our own now.. Happy Holidays all. Happy gift giving.

I totally agree with everything you said. I have so much Christmas stuff and went and bought new it’s just crazy. I kept receipt cause I’m taking back what I don’t use. And honestly I’m using the cheapest paper I can find kids don’t even pay it any mind. One year I done ribbon with candy and little ornaments for gifts and honestly my kids never paid it any mind how much time and money I put into it. My kids are adults and it never phased them whatsoever. I’m definitely going to change up. I spent so much money for thanksgiving dinner and of course I made to much now I’ll be pitching it out😢

All our Christmas decorations are second hand or handmade. Last year I bought a few things from the thrift store and got some things off a local fb group. Furthermore I love crocheting, so I made a lot of decorations already this year. I used a lot of recycled cotton, although I also have some acrylic things. But I know they will last me many many years to come. I enjoyed making these so much in fact, that I started an Etsy shop! Turns out you have to start a lot earlier to become successful on Etsy, but at least I started 😅

I have little santa sacks and I use recycled paper or tissue that comes in packages I just save it throughout the year and then use masking tape on it and write the name on the paper and use small cardboard cards for the sacks that I can holepunch myself. In our family we tend to do our Christmas shopping as early as possible, I only have 3 presents left to go which is great and we all tend to do wishlists for each other in October and November that are budget friendly to each persons budget, we also will do joint presents if someone wants something a bit more expensive :) :)

Although. I like the idea of a themed tree, the reality is that I have baubles from different people and places, and I like all of them on the tree. I have unbreakable baubles for the bottom of the tree, because I used to have house rabbits, and they would eat anything sparkly! Luckily, my two Maine Coons don't seem to be bothered!

I’m working towards having a small box of quality, heirloom decoration. The rest I want to make from natural materials that can be composted at the end of the year. Also handmade ornaments such as crocheted icicles, etc. So everything is to be wood, glass, natural fibers, stone or something that gets composted at the end of the season like cranberry garland, cinnamon oil infused pinecones, dried fruit garland, etc.

Good job with putting things out there that may or may not be controversial. If we all make an effort to be more mindful of our health, environment and the well being of others, I believe our world would start looking a little better. This is good timing to be reminded of living in a simpler time and place. We can create that for ourselves and our families. You are spot on about the food issues and traditional layout we all prepare as well. So overdone!

Really wish I had seen your video before going out and buying lots of rolls of wrapping paper and such wasteful gifts that I have bought for the sake of buying something. Your video has been a real eye opener for me. I was going out shopping today to buy even more decorations for the house even though we have tins up on the loft. Well I'm not going now and I reckon I will save mysekf a fortune. We buy do much food that we don't even need and probably won't even use. I'm not going to do it this year.

Yes we have a 1 in 1 out rule here on everything...but in the last few years we don't do 'material' things as presents...we opt for experiences and food/drink items only unless it something that needs replacing. I don't need clutter in my life or to be wasteful when there are so many people in the world struggling. I also make a lot more donations at this time of year (on top of existing monthly donations)..this year I'm going to give extra to the local food bank and dog shelter....this is what Christmas is all about for me 💖
