Our campaign to ban plastic bags in Bali | Melati and Isabel Wijsen

  • Plastic bags are essentially indestructible, yet they're used and thrown away with reckless abandon. Most end up in the ocean, where they pollute the water and harm marine life; the rest are burned in garbage piles, where they release harmful dioxins into the atmosphere. Melati and Isabel Wijsen are on a mission to stop plastic bags from suffocating their beautiful island home of Bali. Their efforts - including petitions, beach cleanups, even a hunger strike - paid off when they convinced their governor to commit to a plastic bag-free Bali by 2018. "Don't ever let anyone tell you that you're too young or you won't understand," Isabel says to other aspiring activists. "We're not telling you it's going to be easy. We're telling you it's going to be worth it."

    This is a brave movement from children at such a young age. They DO something positive for the environment, and they WORK hard to make it happened. So why all the hate? It's easy to critizise, but have you done smthg good (or even better than this) for the planet?

    • @aileen8880
      @aileen8880 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +metalhead2508 they started at the age 10 and 12 years old. They see a problem, and then they try to fix it with a rather simple method that they (and probably most children) would think at that age. This is supposed to be an invitation, an encouragement to do something to solve this issue together. What I see is that people just critisize without giving any better solutions.

      @Nyar Hey, do you get the point of this video??? This video is trying to encourage kids (like me) to help the world even if we‘re young. As they say "Us kids may only be 25% of the world‘s population, but we are 100% of the future." So if you are seeing this, stop complaining. Not only it is really bad for your brain, it is also a waste of time. Why don‘t you help the enviroment or the elderly now?☺☺☺☺

      @Mr. Morningstar Alternative cloth bags disintegrate if they are thrown out. They decompose. Plastic bags do not decompose instead they end up in the stomachs of whales who die a gruesome death from starvation this has happened several times already. People will not throw cloth bags out because they feel good in the hand and are reusable for a life time. What those kids are doing is remarkable and deeply compassionate. Nobody interferes into someone's private life. And we all live here on this one beautiful planet Earth which is our life giver and the other species are our protegees.

      No they aren't. They should redesign plastics to biodegrade rather than ban them. I lived with several poor in Philippines they already reuse bags the fact that they don't have a care if they littering and garbage doesn't break down is the problem. not the bag you take a 1/2 penny bag force them to buy bags that are heavier and a lot more expensive since they also wear out also get bacteria on your food. I don't give kids a pass in idiotic ideas that kill people.

      +Wizard M well, they didn't ban biodegradable plastic bags. This is in every way a step in the right direction, the biodegradable bags have to serve as a substitute, its no longer just a fancy option.

      Are you suggesting that plastic bags are as essential to your life as COOKING FOOD!? lol Stop deflecting for a second and answer the question. Plastic bags are useless. I happen to agree that plastic bags need to be banned or taxed heavily. A college town I live nearby has banned them altogether, and guess what? They're still ok. Everyone has gotten used to bringing their reusable bags. There aren't massive outbreaks of infections. Ireland has taxed their bags for around 14 years and when the tax was first implemented the amount of bags per person fell sharply 92%.

    I am really inspired by their attitudes. They are really brave, consistent and diligent. The environmental issues are now widely known, but few people are ready to make a difference. We are good at finding out problems, but when the problems are not solved properly, they are still there and negatively affect the developmemt of society. Their story, together with others really makes me believe that everything is possible.

    Those two girls have made such an amazing job and they are so young. How inspiring!
    They taught us that dreams can come true if someone is determined and that we don't need adults to do something we can do on our own. Every child and teenager should see this and be inspired to do the best in his/her life to protect our planet from bad decisions people had made during the time.
    They were just a few children at the beginning and already did so much. Let's imagine if every child in the world did something as Isabel and Melati did: we would change the world completely!

    I guess most of you don't live on an island and therefore you can't see what all this plastic means. 2nd, the usage of plastic bags in Asia is crazy. You get everything you buy in it. A drink? Plastic bag. Rice? Plastic bag ... Stuff you can fit in 2 bags? 5 bags ... Buy a pack of gum? Bag ... and now think how an island can get rid of it in a environmentally save way. There is non, most have to export it to a recycling plant ... or let i rot (will not happen), or throw it in the sea ... So avoiding it in the first place is the right thing to do. Thanks for the video, i wish "we" had someone like the 2 girls on the island i live (much smaller). I try to do my part by collect all what is recyclable (mainly bottles, because tap water is not save, but also paper, glass and plastic in general) to get it recycled (locals pick it up for free and they get money for it). But of course i also try avoid getting plastic bags if i don't need them. And i'm not a hippie at all, i just care what happens to "my" island.

  • @ngipiksari
    @ngipiksari 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    OK, their presentation is a bit over-rehearsed but the use of plastic bags is a problem not just in Bali but all over Indonesia. In many areas there are no refuse disposal facilities or collection service. The tendency to place anything and everything in a plastic bag combined with a lack of education and a habit of treating rivers and canals as a dustbin make this a serious issue. Plastic bags block drains causing serious flooding in the rainy season affecting property, causing traffic congestion and even resulting in loss of life. Well done girls!

  • @TomlinsTE
    @TomlinsTE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On Oahu a ban on plastic bags was instituted with exceptions, like reusable bags are okay. Now most of the places I used to get thin plastic bags offer me much thicker reusable plastic bags instead. I handle the bags exactly the same way I did before the ban, but now they will surely take far longer to decompose.

    • @biguglystick
      @biguglystick 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +TomlinsTE Well, you SHOULD be recycling them and not just doing what you did before. Sounds like you're throwing them out. SHAME on you! Especially living somewhere as beautiful as Hawaii and disrespecting the land like that.

    • @TomlinsTE
      @TomlinsTE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sheryl Schroeder They aren't recyclable, they are re-usable, and we do re-use them, however I suspect a very large number of them end up in landfills where the new (improved) versions surely take longer to decompose. I think the efforts here have been short sighted and pointless. A better solution might have been to offer flimsy biodegradable bags for people who forget to bring their own bags and maybe even offer a tiny discount or reward to those that bring their own.

    Living here in Bali or anywhere in Indonesia you will notice locals of any age littering, if you come here watch the people as they exit the door of an indomart shop etc and 8 out of 10 times they will open a wrapper cigarette or food and drop it on the ground in front of anyone without any fear of it being wrong or illegal, in traffic cars in front of you will expel plastic and water bottles too,
    take a drive throughout the country and you will see mountains of trash piles in places, if you travel to Tabanan and spend time in that area between Canggu and Bedugal you will notice the intoxicating smell and clouds of smoke drifting offshore in the dry season along with the doubly rice grass burn offs... there is no infrastructure big enough here and most officials are corrupt and obviously don't care enough, the Bali government has only really been in existence for 5 years with a governor who is improving things but not focusing enough on the trash epidemic.
    Integrity doesn't breed well here to tackle this disgusting problem, education in Bali must improve dramatically especially in Balinese culture,
    If they want to be clean they must make take a firm stance on littering in the media everywhere and adopt methods like Japan or Singapore and educate the public that its everyone's problem after you drop that plastic...you cannot solely blame education, the parenting problem is tough too as they rarely have an ideal upbringing in the home to instill good hygienic standards, the majority of uneducated Indonesians I know come across as very lazy people no argument there, the problem is the government and the population is immense to undertake a socioeconomic change for a trash free future... plastic bags are not the only problem.

    I did some research and it turns out reusable bags actually are better because:
    *negative environmental impact of plastic.
    *if you just wash your reusable bag once a month no disease and @37$ a year you will be largely contributing to a better future so that'll make up for lost money if you have a conscience.
    *number of uses per bag to make it overall cleaner than plastic: polyethylene - 4, polypropylene - 11, cotton - 131 (all achievable).

    Those two young ladies must have really good parents. To take the initiative to do something like this.
    That being said, I wonder if this result was part of the initial plan? or if this was what it evolved into?
    The reason I say this is because it seems kind of hard core response to plastic bags in general. But will probably work. They could have upped the recycling but I guess they looked at statistics and thought.."Hey this won't work" or something. ?

    From an engineer's viewpoint, plastic bags are far more superior. They are more strong and very cheap to manufacture. And who said they're not 'green'? They're recyclable, aren't they?

    • @EvanRustMakes
      @EvanRustMakes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Ian Swart yes, and if governments would invest money into making bags biodegradable rather than banning them would be much better :D

    • @IanSwart
      @IanSwart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      havingMC I totally agree. Rather than consulting ignorant children, employ specialist engineers! And to make matters worse that children totally overlooked the idea of using biodegradable plastic bags instead of regular plastic bags.

    • @EvanRustMakes
      @EvanRustMakes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @IanSwart
      @IanSwart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brandan Nolan Polyethylene is by far the most used plastic to manufacture bags, because of it's strength, durability and the fact it can be *recycled*

    a very good beggining, but this is about plastic carry bag which is tip of an iceberg. All daily needs come in plastic packaging just because companies want the products branded, consumer lost trust in un packed stuff and lot of products move long distance instead of selling local.

    They don't seem to understand why plastic bags are so good to use. Net bags, newspaper bags, all good for the environment, but cant contain any liquids at all. They are weak and flimsy. Even more so then plastic bags.

    It doesn't work in California. Everyone just buys thicker plastic bags that are "reusable", but no one reuses it. Then there's the other companies that still have the same thin bags and slap a green 'reusable' logo.

      CCornelius I don't buy any plastic bags and I hate it when it's forced on me. It would be much easier to avoid plastic bags if they're banned.
      Or we do it like in Ireland. I mean, look at the results there! Real results should drive our decisions.

    • @TakanashiYuuji
      @TakanashiYuuji 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CCornelius I'm not willing to stop with plastic bags. Why would that be a bad thing? You should consider yourself extremely privileged that you can live a life of luxury at the expense of your children and your children's children. You should probably also be ashamed of that.

    • @john_hunter_

      +CCornelius I've stopped using plastic bags. I use reusable bags whenever I go shopping. It's not hard if you aren't lazy. It takes half a second to grab the bags and bring them with you.

      What I´m going to say may seem obvious, but sometimes it´s better to have certain laws, than to have certain freedoms. An example would be murder: It´s better to have a law against murder, than to give everyone the freedom murder anyone they want. The law against murder takes away your freedom to murder, but history has proven, that societies with such a law work better than societies in which you have the freedom to murder. So even if a law takes away some of your freedoms, it can still be a good law.
