Churchill Show should evolve and change a little in my opinion.
1. Making people laugh by adding sound effects should stop. Raw comedic talent is either over-hyped or in some cases even messed with when laughter sets in and the audience feels like its being made to laugh harder. Simply put, let the music be used as a segue into another act and loosen tension or add a feel good vibe for the audience when the comedians are not on the stage. Anything more and we are risking reducing these shows to just cheap hype parties with little talent nurturing. Simple question, which comedian do you know in Kenya can do a one hour special like Trevor and other huge names in the industry? Truth hurts but someone needs to say it.
2. The camera works is awesome. Basically the production has improved over the years and its a lovely thing. However here is my my two cents on a few issues. Turning the focus onto the audience and stealing a few quick glances of a few people there is not bad. When it is over done however, man it really brings about the worst in things. The director needs to choose well when he/she will want to show which audience reactions and when wisely. For instance, a joke being hammered through and not being particularly as funny as would be expected to be would be a great example of a "when not to show the audience reaction!" Surely you do not want to show the reaction of the audience feeling really awkward seeing themselves on the big screen when they are "not laughing". You also may not want to even show the audience reaction after each and every joke anyway! Its great for those who want to see themselves on TV but actually hurts the comedic performance by the acts themselves! People will be too engrossed in thinking about if they are going to be busted by the camera guy than just sitting down and laughing at good jokes and enjoying their time there. One word. Moderation!!! Am trying really hard not to appear like one of those guys! So even as I critique, I try to be gentle about it and offer good feedback.
3. Try and work towards specials where the really great comedians get maximum amounts of time and if they actually can, let them have their own special events! Like jokes upon jokes so that the bar is set higher and we actually have comedians who can go international not just local chaps. You have a great thing going here so the sky is the limit guys. We want to remember the comedians and not just the hype and special guests.
Go back to the roots. We came here for the laughs, we will stay for the laughs. If the laughs are not as funny man, then why are we here anyway? 5:21 is a particularly disturbing trend if you ask me.
