Just like the regulator failed to really cap energy bills when they started rising a lot back in 2021 and 2022 etc. There appears to be a pattern emerging here, could it be part of the tories agenda
The price cap was never going to work because it doesn't put a cap on price of producers, only suppliers. If there's a tanker full of liquefied gas and they say it costs this much and the government says "can't charge that much so can't pay that much for the gas" then the tanker just says "fuck you, I'm off the sell it to Germany instead". The price cap was introduced for when gas was exceptionally CHEAP, so cheap that consumers were being charged way way more than it cost to buy it from producers but these suppliers wanted to save up for a rainy day, instead they were limited and now the rainy days have well and truly come and they've got no savings. Most people have no idea how price caps work, they work in the exact OPPOSITE way you presume. They don't help when there's a gas shortage, they only slightly help when there's an abundance and overall they do more harm than good.
Yes, it is misconduct in public office. You wonder why nothing is being done in the public interest. Until you view the video... I'd say there is fraud involved (Fraud Act 2006; making and using an instrument to deceive, and mislead; liability orders discontinued in 2003, and never replaced). And when fraud comes in it kills everything. E.G. in the case of the regime's illegal and fraudulent Council Tax, you can claim back every penny they have falsely obtained from you.
How can anyone turn up to these crucial videoed meetings with MPs with no facts and figures in a folder in front of them for ready reference? How can someone turn up with nothing but a bottle of water and just blithely say "I'm not sure - I'd need to confirm that" on basic questions of fact?
David Davies did same in his role as Brexit minister……anyone seeing the pattern here? No preparation for the meeting, just spinning ideological mantras for the Tory chumocracy…..
Amazes me, having watched numerous commons committee meetings, that so many of these "independent" regulators, can be seen to be absolutely clueless about the actual circumstances that they are presiding over! OFWAT.... OFCOM .... Etc... And of course on a different tack, the recent interviews with the CEO of Royal Mail. We're being taken for idiots on every front!
Like me asking my son if he has tidied his room and him saying “I’ll take that point on board dad and I am actively engaged in reflecting on that perspective”
The problem with this - Ofcom will not change anything because of a grilling by a select commitee MP. Nothing will change until there is a change of government.
My absolute fear is, nothing will change WITH a change of government. The flaws of 'unfettered' capitalism, and I really mean unfettered, have to be dealt with.
Lord Michael Grade - Since 2011, he has been a Conservative Party life peer in the House of Lords. In April 2022, it was announced by the Government[2] that Grade would take up his four year appointment as Chairman of Ofcom from May 2022 - From his Wiki page. Says it all really
A sure sign of perverse appointments is to appoint Nadine Dories to anything. And Esther MacVey? and Rees-Mogg? When the lunatics run the asylum there is problem. Wall to wall carpet to cover the flaws
Nadine Dories is launching her own new social media platform combining the functionality of twitter with the broad scope of facebook, she is calling it Twit-Face.
You have to say that she is under illusions about her patent stupidity. I think it shows great humility to pronounce to the world that her show is hosted by a cretin,, that her network is owned by a liar and the entire endeavour is to appeal to the national reservoir of bloody idiots, paranoids, liars, cheats, obsessives, fascists .It should do well if Brexit is any guide @@ianwright389

@@emm_arr But you can list his beliefs and positions (or can you?), and they are simply not far right by any definition. It's like calling a bird a dog, it's a categorical error. Or just a politically expedient lie. Free markets, small state, free speech, mass migration, these are his positions, they are the opposite of far right. Presuming you like big state interventionism, which to be clear is a legitimate position, you are nevertheless closer to the far right than he is
I'm really impressed by this MP! If we dont grasp the problem now, we'll end up sleepwalking into the kind of scenario they have in The States. Very scary indeed.
Ofcom was only supposed to regulate the content of broadcast media because it is what is within UK jurisdiction. Not use that as a pretext to scour all the media outside UK jurisdiction.
Couldn’t have summed it up better. Time to overhaul Ofcom for the better. Then they can clean up TV and radio by getting rid of GBNews, TalkTV and all other Murdoch media. Can also get rid of Sharpe, Gibb and Davie from the BBC. While they’re at it, remove Neil and Balls from ITV and Channel 4 too.
Russia Today got taken off the air . No these channels are being allowed to be eradicating the need to have accuracy. Why are many of these presenters of GBNews given a guest slot on BBC current affairs programmes ?
Just come here after doing my usual watch of what they're up to, looked at jeremy kyle and first guest prev editor of the sun rejoicing hunts budget! ! This is the best select committee ever and about time!!
If Labour gets in at next election we need a root and branch clear out of all watchdogs. I’d consider scrapping the lot of them if this is the standard of their enthusiasm to do the job properly. Pathetic.
But New Labour are Conservative, in all but name. Starmer won't reverse anything of the tyranny, and dictatorship the Conservatives have wrought upon us.
She seems to have the same level of understanding as Nadine Dorries has on the media, she knows what the channels are called and you can find them on a TV but i'll ask someone in the office to give me any other info.
The answers and non-answers of this Melanie Dawes does beg the question what is OFCOM there for. She seems to have a good vision of what it's not there for which is pretty much everything that has anything to do with broadcasting!
What about the leveson enquiries. Tories promised to activate its recommendations then broke their promises with Hancock announcing their refusal to keep their promises.
Of course there is political bias in the media. Newspapers never had to be impartial. The problem is that the owners of newspapers are now operating tv channels which is why Ofcom are looking into that very area. However has Ofcom said - GB News and Talk TV are not actually news channels - They don't do rolling news they are actually opinion based channels. The problem is Ofcom rules on impartiality in news refers to news channels not opinion channels. When people complain about a programme to Ofcom, Ofcom can only take action if the programme broke Ofcom rules, where as most of the complaints to Ofcom are from members of the public who don't agree with something. The right wing complain the BBC is left wing and the left wing accuse the BBC of being the Government's PR piece. Both of those statements about the BBC clearly cannot be right - But that's the complaints that Ofcom get from both side of the political spectrum.
Surely freedom of expression should NOT allow freedom of FACTS & SITTING politicians definitely should NOT be presenters or host their own programmes imo
The difference between May and now is the difference of the right wing and extreme right wing .. even May is dead against this Rwanda deal. Labour is currently acting as the centre with bits that don’t suit a lot of us .. but I’d rather have the Labour MP’s dealing with this mess than the corrupt right wing horror show we have now.
A necessary evil. When Corbyn ran the Labour party with fairly sensible moderate left wing policies he was branded Comrade Corbyn by the aforementioned right wing press and, unfortunately, there are too many morons incapable of thinking for themselves so they let the newspapers determine who they vote for. The only chance Labour have, with the media bias as right wing as it is, is to play the game, get in power and then, hopefully, tear down the system and start again.
Who shows up to a select committee with zero information? Every answer has been i dont know but i'll look into it... She hasn't been abducted off the street and dragged into the committee! Not a single folder! It's almost like she wasn't planning on giving straight answers!
What would really help is that channels that want to labelled as "News" channels have to report evidence based output. And that viewers have a right to complain if that output doesn't have such evidence. And any opinions voiced by guests that don't have evidence are clearly labelled as opinion void of evidence; that way journalists are REQUIRED to ask their guests for evidence.
Interesting reading ; How the online alt-right shifted the Overton window by Andrew Marantz. The goal he says was to build the political discourse in their own image.
They can't it's against the rules but apparently these twats are claiming that GB news's isn't news. This doesn't actually matter but Tories being Tories they don't give a shit
As they spoke about here towards the end, Talk TV and GB News have somehow convinced the regulator that they are not technically ‘news’ programmes/channels - GB NEWS is not a news channel 🤷♂️
Impartial : Dame Melanie Henrietta Dawes DCB (born 9 March 1966) is a British economist and civil servant. Since February 2020 she has been Chief Executive of Ofcom. She was previously the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and before that worked at HM Treasury, HM Revenue and Customs, and in the Cabinet Office. In January 2015, Dawes was announced as the next Permanent Secretary of the Department for Communities and Local Government, succeeding Sir Bob Kerslake. She was the first permanent secretary to be appointed under a new scheme in which the Prime Minister has the final say in the recruitment process; the PM now chooses directly from a list created by the Civil Service Commissioners, rather than only having a veto over the Commissioners' preferred candidate. She took up the position on 1 March 2015.
So-called green energy is expensive
OMG she's disgraceful. She needs to go. And she needs to be prosecuted for misuse of public office.
Considering who her husband is, the latter is sorely needed.
That kind of incompetence, that's how you earn the big bucks. She will be leader of the Conservatives inside of two years!
David Davies did same in his role as Brexit minister……anyone seeing the pattern here? No preparation for the meeting, just spinning ideological mantras for the Tory chumocracy…..
There are no real consequences, why bother. You could just sit back with your feet on the table.

Totally agree with Kevin Brennan has to say about the take over of local TV broadcasters by Talk TV.......How did that happen?
Similar happened with radio. Global Radio grabbed virtually all originally "independant" stations.
Amazes me, having watched numerous commons committee meetings, that so many of these "independent" regulators, can be seen to be absolutely clueless about the actual circumstances that they are presiding over! The problem with this - Ofcom will not change anything because of a grilling by a select commitee MP. Nothing will change until there is a change of government.

Imagine being the head of OFCOM and having to be TOLD to look into the relationship between social and broadcast media.
Ofcom was only supposed to regulate the content of broadcast media because it is what is within UK jurisdiction. Not use that as a pretext to scour all the media outside UK jurisdiction.
Basically she'll think about it, then sit on their hands
She's almost certainly been compromised in some way. Out she goes.

Should be asking about BBC impartiality during Brexit
The answers and non-answers of this Melanie Dawes does beg the question what is OFCOM there for. She seems to have a good vision of what it's not there for which is pretty much everything that has anything to do with broadcasting!
What about the leveson enquiries. Tories promised to activate its recommendations then broke their promises with Hancock announcing their refusal to keep their promises.

I always said that there's a political bias in the media
political bias in the media like the BBC very left-wing bias
@@alexedwards-mg6gk don't be silly!!!! Examples please?????

Finally we are talking about this.
I'm sick of far right propaganda. Really sick.

As of 2015, Dawes was paid a salary of between £160,000 and £164,999 by DCLG, making her one of the 328 most highly paid people in the British public sector at that time
