When your gramma is Dutch but you don't look Dutch

- What is an Indo ? For sure not someone from Indonesia, with all respect, Indonesians are known to be champions in finding an abbreviation for any word eg. MoNas (Monumen Nasional/National Monument) DP (Down Payment) HP (Hand Phone) WA (WhatsApp) DR (Dari/From) CB (Coba/try) and as many more as much as it has numerous of thousand islands BUT let's not forget heir most famous abbreviation which is INDO as from INDOnesia...
On the other hand me, myself and I am an Indo as in Indo European or Eurasian with my roots in the former Dutch East Indies which is nowadays Indonesia. Our people have been called for over 3 centuries Indo, a mix between a European parent and an indigenous Sumatran, Javanese, Sundanese, Manadonese, Balinese, Ambonese etc.... because there wasn't Indonesia until 17 August 1945.
Indos like myself are associated with colonial culture of the former Dutch East Indies, we call it INDISCHE INDOS, don't ask Google because Google describe us as folks from INDIA :-(
The term Indo refers to people from the former Dutch East Indies who held a European legal status but were of mixed Dutch/English, German, Belgian, French, Portugese, Armenian... and indigenous Sumatran, Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Manadonese, Ambonese or any Island descent as well as their descendants today.
I'm so happy I met Benedict who's Javanese born and raised just like his mom and dad BUT Benedict is also an Indo, enjoy his story, he couldn't have it done better and I encourage other Indonesians who recognize themselves in Benedict to reach out to him or myself and share similar stories.

almost the same as me with different sides. My great-grandfather was Dutch, he married a Javanese. then my grandfather was born, technically my grandfather was Indo (Dutch Javanese) he was born in Malang. He moved to Australia after the war, then he married to my grandma (aussie) . later on, my mother was born in Queensland, historically so I'm also Indo's or Javanese. but I don't know the culture.😂

Interesting story, he talks about facts that are never discussed. I live in Central Java, I'm interested in his story, I'm sure he's not the only one. he has the mixture of Javanese and Dutch shades at the same time, but somehow he's not ordinary javanese.

It's interesting to see this search from the "other" side, with that I mean that a lot of people here in the netherlands are looking into their families history that is related to the dutch indies/Indonesia. I'm an Indo just like my father and his parents. It's funny to see that this interest in family history of course goes both ways.
It somewhat bothers me that still a lot of indos here in the netherlands don't know their own history. Calling themselves indonesian, or part indo, like you said, there is no such thing as a part indo. Indo is indo.
But to be fair "Indisch zwijgen" here in the netherlands, is a real obstacle that create these misconceptions or unaccessible family information. Not being able to ask about your own heritage really sucks in a world where everyone keeps asking what you "are".
@@ItsASuckyName Thk u so much for ur contribution to Benny’s story and YES while Inwas living in both NL and Belgium it was bothering me too that people didn’t know the difference between us Indos and Indonesians, then the fact that Indonesians use Indo as an abbreviation for Indonesia makes it even more confusing and if a former member of Dutch Parliament Pechtold and often the Dutch Public Broadcaster NPO uses the wrong words it’s indeed something to cry for lololol…

Many of us have decided to not use Indo anymore because it's a racist and colonial term. Last 17 August there was also a lecture on it in Amsterdam.
@@ffqmI know in Holland they try to change everything that has the word black in it and try to rewrite history and label everything with RACIST well I and majority of Indos will keep on using Indo to describe ourselves and who we are and where our history started, how would u describe urself if someone asks u, just curious though…

Please tell your friend Benedict that I think he might be a descendent of the royal family. My Oma, Sawinah Tronowidjono F., was born in 1899 in the Purowedjo Regency and was supposed to be married to the Sultan during WW1. Your friend looks exactly like him. 😮 Oma ended up running away from home and marrying my Dutch Opa instead, partially because 15 year old Oma thought the Sultan was "about a hundred years old" (actually around 50). Opa died in Aceh in WW2, and Oma was able to get the family on one of the first ships to NL when everything went sour. Wegene is an excellent DNA site for anyone with Asian ancestry. Those of us with regal lineage might be surprised to know that our ancestors came to Indonesia from Cambodia and China pretty recently.
