yesssssss my ds718+ (2) still by far in the competition ! I have tried at home and outside is amazingly responsive !! Thanks for this vidéo !

I'm going to build my own nas and very confusing about hardware transcoding of J3455, according to wikipedia of Intel QuickSync, iGPU come with Apollo Lake should be able to transcoding 4K hevc main 10, however J3455 come with Intel HD 500 instead of 6xx varians like other ApolloLake CPUs. Your test confirm that J3455 could transcode 4k 10bit, it even better than J4125 in this case, is that still true in 2023 with newer version of plex?
The regression in performance compared to the previous generation is due to bugs in Intel's media drivers that do not yet support Gemini Lake properly. Once these are fixed hardware acceleration should work for fine for 10-bit HEVC video as well.
That’s a bit disappointing about the 4K transcoding results. I was sure that the intel quick sync (hw acceleration) on the updated J4125 could handle hevc 10-bit encoding since it’s part of Gemini lake family and based on wiki the table shows that it should support it. However, there’s a gotcha on the notation that I missed and this seems to only be true for Kaby Lake Family of processors, so yeah indeed 4K files should perform similar to the previous generation NAS as far as transcoding goes (there might be an advantage with the VP9 10-bit files though) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video
4k 10bits with tone mapping is almost impossible on Plex today. Even with GPU the colors suffer and it's not a real alternative. From plex forums (TeknoJunky user): - hdr is not backwards compatible with sdr (washed out colors etc) - hd audio does not pass through tv (audio must be transcoded) - not all clients are compatible with all subtitles (incompatible subtitles coupled with transcoded audio = transcoded video) - and whenever an old server gets hit with 4k transcoding = fall over go boom (hevc/265 transcoding takes magnitudes more computer power than old 264)
I have over 200 movies on my old PC using it as PLEX media server. I am thinking about buying Synology NAS. how do I move all my movies to synology NAS. Thank you. But the way great videos keep up with good work. Shawn, USA, TEXAS
I need to ask for a bit of specific advice, because I'm new to NAS and don't know how to compare things well yet. I just got a DS1019+ in the mail ($650) and just found out about the DS920+. It seems like the difference is limited to price, bays, and a small difference in CPU. Is there any reason in particular I'd want to return the DS1019+ and get a DS920, given it's a new generation?
Love all the focus on a Plex but have you done a video with VM performance on the old bs new models like a single Debian or Windows VM? Would be great to see how it works with a VM and a Plex transcode.
@@shoutingstone Hmm, bit frustrating seeing as it's launched elsewhere by now. I don't need it tomorrow but an estimated date to work with at least would be useful. I emailed Synology UK sales and will let you know if they reply
@@jaket282 Span now have stock of the DS720+. Now I'm undecided if i want to swallow the £26 (!) delivery Span want to charge me or hang on and get free delivery from Amazon..
@@shoutingstone Nice, thanks for sharing. I had an alert from Span to say the 920+ was in stock but clicking the link shows it's in fact still unavailable. Synology UK replied to my email, I asked about the 920+ but they replied saying "The 220+ is releasing at different times in different countries" and they expect it in Q3 for Europe.
Largely due to an internal Plex driver issue. The latest Plex build is forcing the system to use a less capable driver. There is a Plex driver fix that will resolve this and you should be able to find my videos from the last month or so to guide you.
@@nascompares Just another quick question: I'm new to the NAS-universe, so idk about the long term experiences. Do proper brands like Synology usually improve their product performance with each firmware updates? And also the app performance with specific app updates? If so, can we expect further improvements to the stock performance? And also, how common is that a firmware update messes up the performance, and if so, are they quicky fixed by another update, i mean how good is the Synology support in this sense?
This is very disapointing. I had a plan changing my old TS-251A to TS-453D (the same platform as DS920+) mostly for Plex experience improvement. Now I lost my main reason for such change...
Wait for the Videostation test and for the Codec deletion in plex...this must be Codec/optimization issue as the new processor should be more powerful...

Starting from 16:30 you have switched to the same NAS (1019+) for both playbacks

Just bought a DS1019+. Still consider it better than DS920. Expecting. 1020+ soon but Synology hasn’t acknowledged yet.

Is there a UK street date for these yet? The only place I can see them listed is Span and their lead time has just jumped from 12 to 30+ days
I asked Span and the said they didn't have any firm information yet. Been waiting so long now.
@@jaket282 I asked Overclockers (who are an official reseller according to the Synology website) and they had no information either
