Transforming Portugal’s Forest-Based Value Chains - IUFRO 2024 - CoLAB ForestWISE - Full Version

Portugal has the opportunity to develop rural areas and transform their management in drivers of innovation and sustainability in the face of climate change! The rural wildfires reinforce the necessity of an active forest management ensuring the safety of communities, the vitality of forestry economy, environmental balance and the social economic progress of the country. Facing these challenges requires environmental structures, actions like modernizing fire prevention and firefighting models, and continuously enhancing the management of forest areas. These measures aim to generate positive impacts in short to long term, strengthening the forestry economy and promoting sustainability.
Agenda transform: transforming the forest setor through collaboration and innovation:
Agenda Transform is a major initiative of CoLAB ForestWISE, co-funded under the framework of the Portuguese Plan for Recovery and Resilience, with the support of the European Union. Under their technical and financial management, Agenda Transform represents an unprecedented effort of sectoral cooperation, involving 56 partners in 30 collaborative projects organized into 6 Work Packages. These are dedicated to the management of resilient forests (WP1), sustainable operations and logistics (WP2), circular and resilient industry (WP3), markets and consumers for forest products (WP4), capacity building (WP5) and finally, cross-cutting the entire Agenda Transform, a sixth Work Package dedicated to coordination, dissemination and exploitation of results.
Agenda Transform aims to bring a structural transformation to the Portuguese forestry sector, addressing the entire value chain. The mission is to make a significant contribution to sustainable forest management, optimize industrial processes, boost the competitiveness of the forest sector, and ensure greater connection to markets and consumers. For that, Agenda Transform will deliver 11 new Products, Processes, and Services, or PPS, supported by digital technologies, with a high degree of innovation.
