How I make a Chisel Plane - Woodworking

In this video I make a Chisel Plane from a 32mm Chisel that I bought for 1 Euro. I have since used the Plane a lot and the edge of the Iron is holding up really well. An old or broken Chisel may be a good option also in making this handy little Plane.
The Body of the plane is Apple Wood
The Body is cut at an angle of 12 degrees
The Wedge holding the Iron / Blade is Yellow Birch
The Iron / Blade bevel is ground and sharpened at 25 degrees
I finished the Plane by using a couple of coats of Boiled Linseed Oil

Have you tried annealing the blade where you're going to make the slot? It might make drilling and filing easier. Also, if you filed a lengthwise groove across the threads of the furniture bolt, that would make it easier to cut threads in the holes (but I would just use a tap.). And one more little thing - a magnet wrapped in a paper towel will make it easy to pick up the sharp metal swarf and files - just unwrap the towel and toss it in the trashcan.

A beautiful tool! I have been needing a chisel plane and have a lot of beech chunks lying around. I'm going to try my hand at making one myself. Would you be willing to share the dimensions of your plane so I have a rough idea of what to start with? Thanks again for sharing your videos!

Awesome job Yogi. I like how the grain really popped after you put the linseed oil on it. By the way do you have any plans available on your big belt sander?

so sharp its slices through paper (not really), slices through wood (kinda)well shit he sharpens things as well as i do! Nice piece, just thought that was funny.
A small drawer pull knob screwed into the top rear of the plane might make the small plane a bit more comfortable in the hand and provide a little more control. Great job otherwise!!! Beautiful wood choice! What wood is it?

У стамески для "взрослых" закалка должна быть 58-60 единиц HRC, при условии, что она изготовлена из инструментальной стали. То есть я тонко намекаю, что просверлить такой материал рапитовым (быстрорез) сверлом, просто не реально, ибо сверло имеет закалку максимум 63 единицы HRC. И уж тем более обработать его напильником, не представляется возможным. Я работаю инструментальщиком на авиа моторном заводе, большую часть жизни (а мне седьмой десяток) занимаюсь изготовлением, режущего инструмента (сверла, фрезы, развертки, метчики) то есть, имею представление, о чем говорю. На видео я вижу только руки, но насколько я могу судить, человеку кому они принадлежат возраст 45-48 лет. ЭТО, то что Вы изготовили, не является инструментом, ибо Вам придется его постоянно править, резать ним можно только будет, тополь, сосну, ну может быть клен, и то по слоям. Я к тому что уж если есть охота, самому изготовить себе собственный инструмент, то начать нужно с поиска нужной заготовки, (сырой) а затем полный цикл изготовления, и тогда можно будет показать это на люди. Извините за критику, за ложку дегтя, на Вашу бочку меда, но на критику, тем более обоснованную обижаться грех. С уважение ко всем людям, кто что то делает своими руками, не получилось в первый раз, все равно на пользу, ибо приобрел необходимый опыт........

I live this thing good job! But isn't boiled linseed oil per definition not organic cause of the of the chemical compounds to decrease curing time🤔
Thank you Sander 😊 I buy the linseed oil locally from an organic producer and no drying additives are included. You can also use raw linseed oil also, only it will take longer to dry or you can boil the oil yourself, but it is a tricky process due to the low flashpoint 😊 I'm sure Jame Wright made a few videos on the subject too 😊 ॐ
Hey! Why has TH-cam hidden this from me? I'm only a third of the way through and it's brilliant already. I love that wee angle gauge at about 7:30. (I was starting to watch this when the moxibustion vid popped up.)
Just today, I was thinking of how to make people aware of previous project videos and I often take a look at other channels to find some of the best stuff to watch is when they are beginning to upload projects and a lot of it becomes lost in the past while they struggle to come up with new content. The angle gauge is really great and I made it for an instructable a long time ago 😊 ॐ
Remember do used instrument of medition to mark the piece could be damaged

Hi Daniel :) The body is at 12 degrees and made from Apple Wood. I used the plane today and it works great and after a lot of use is still holding a sharp edge. It's surprised me so far and it came out better than I originally planned ॐ

Like the concept and ease of execution, but curious about how the body holds up. Just behind the blade tip is a thin point of exposed end grain and when using the tool that thin point of point where all the action is happening. Can't imagine it would take much to chew up or split bits off that part of the wood body, especially if used over knots. Not much of a problem, more of minor inconvenience really, but curious as to how well the wood portion holds up and if it needs some regular dressing or replacing.
Hi Devon :) I use the plane frequently without any problem, but I understand what you say and will keep an eye on it over time. I did use a piece of well seasoned Apple wood and it is really hard. Maybe that helps ॐ
You finished up with a nice tool but your use of drill press made me cringe. The sharp end of the blade is in your palm and the vice is not secured in any way. When the drill grabs you can kiss those tendons good bye. They don't grow back. an old machinist.

I'm afraid I agree. The swarf can be razor sharp too. But I like the project!
I'm not agree. It is Yogi "selftool", if it works fir him - then you should be ok. You can cut yourself with any tool, if you do not think enough.
It made me uncomfortable. When a drill grabs and spins your work you have 30ms to get your hand away before it catches you the second time. Bad luck. Well not really.
Is there non organic BLO?
I'm a bit fussy about the use of Glyphosate during crop growing and don't really want contact with it in any form and why I use organic oil, especially if I'm making toys ॐ

I just did not like seeing you put that iron on the electric grinder. It can reduce hardness and it puts a concave bevel on the blade, but you fixed it on the sandpaper and leather strop. Nice Chisel plane. Very resourceful.
I agree about the heat problem. A slow stone usually has cooling fluid.
A concave grind is a mixed blessing/curse. Honing and stropping are quicker for a while. Unfortunately it is less robust.

You know files only cut on the push stroke... When you drag your file back along the metal in the pull stroke, you dramatically reduce the life of the file.
Otherwise, great job. Really enjoyed the build. Going to have to make one of these for myself from one of my many cast away chisels.
Thank you Frank 😊 I do have a habit of dragging the file back, but it's lighter than it looks 😁 I hope you make something similar. I get comments that the design can't work for various reasons yet I use it often and it does a great job for the purpose I planned. It cost a bit of time and a cheap chisel and holds an edge well 😊 ॐ

They will make drilling in a vice easier because you won't have to make sure you are drilling into an open space. Btw, they are called machinists parallels.

nice job but it might be more easier, faster, cheaper and better quality metal if you went out and spent the 20 bucks on a new block plain.
Hi Mark :) It's not so easy in parts of Central Europe. There is a huge lack of decent tools and any available have massively inflated prices. I have block planes, but I can't get right into a corner or tight spot with them. I can with this plane :) It didn't take long and it is fun to make your own tools.

1 euro for a chisel that is cheap
It is Jef 😊 They were being sold to clear space for a different product and one of the reasons I experimented in making this little plane. It still holds it's edge well too. I bought 4 chisels in all 😊 ॐ
