The latter was based on Jacqueline Susann's 2nd best-seller, with Mr. Law replacing Brian Kelly in the title role after Mr. Kelly had been in a motorcycle accident. Fun fact: the "engine room" was shot inside a huge industrial building, complete with random pipes and some shoddily added tables and "computer consoles". The windows of the building let sunlight in and the windows (or the cameras) were fitted with filters to give it the illusion that it was being shot inside the ship's reactor, with the windows providing an eerie orange tinge from the reactor itself. In post, no one told the editors about this and they color corrected every single scene to remove the orange filter, returning everything to normal colors.
My own personal opinion is that even if they left the color grading in, you probably still wouldn't have mistaken it for a reactor.
Also, JJ Abrams would later do nearly the exact some kind of "film set" inside a brewery as the Enterprise's engine room. Complete with random water pipes that serve no purpose and computer consoles hastily tacked onto a bunch of stainless brewing tanks (and then later changing it to something more normal looking in 'Into Darkness').
    Why must history repeat itself?

Now this one I've definitely seen. I did find a video on you tube once - can't remember the channel or the exact title - about the making of this and it's an interesting story. The Galactica footage was unused VFX shots from that which they brought in bulk. When filming was about to commence, the director had a bereavement, so didn't actually do any of the shoot, someone else taking over. And then he fell very badly ill and it looked as if he wasn't going to pull through. But he ended up having to do the final edit anyway, while he was on death bed. Fortunately he got better. He said the window shots were supposed to be fixed in post and make them a different colour to be fumes from the engine. But it didn't get done. The dead crewwoman on the bridge came about because the shot he needed for that moment hadn't been done. And since the film was underring they shot all the stuff with the alien women and added it in to make the time up. Which is why they play no part in the plot.
He did go on to direct again. Dancing movie 'Dancin'! it's on!' the rifftrax version of which you can find on amazon prime.
If anyone uses microsoft teams, put Space Mutiny into the search box for GIFs, and you will find a few. Sci fi dancin and Angry! are awesome. Still waiting for a chance to use them though.

Christopher Lee did not avoid typecasting, but he escaped it sufficiently to have a very, VERY diverse CV, even if most folks don't remember it. That's the danger when you're a good character actor; they'll remember the iconic roles, but might not recognize you in a long wig, facial hair and an eye patch.

Ah yes, probably the best episode of MST3K was the heckling of Space Mutiny. Glad to see I wasn't the only person to wonder what Leah was doing during Kalgan's hostage demand speech.
Malcolm McDowell seems to have had a very diverse career as well. Starting out as villains like Alex (A Clockwork Orange) and Caligula, he seems to be playing more sympathetic and even heroic roles in recent years like H.G. Wells (Time After Time) and Dr. Loomis (Rob Zombie's Halloween).

I have this longstanding suspicion that this movie actually started out as Galactica fanfic. Like someone cooked up a half-assed story about someone attempting to overthrow Adama, and they called up Universal and said, "Can we make a Galactica movie?" and Universal said, "Hell, no!"
"Well, can we use some footage from Galactica?"
"Oh, sure, that'd be fine. Did you want some Buck Rogers footage, too?"
    "Eww, gross."
And with that in mind it *almost* makes sense. Almost. I mean, it's still garbage, but I think it was supposed to take place between the original Galactica and Galactica 1980. G-80 also being garbage....

I like the fantasy angle approach. That ship is huge and would make a good dungeon for an old school D&D campaign.
You know, if you remade a movie like this, it would be interesting if it turned out that the artificial intelligence of the ship actually runs everything and doesn't need humans. However, it keeps them around because it likes to mess with and manipulate them into convoluted and unnecessary dramatic conflicts for its own entertainment. Running a city sized ship is too boring without some distraction.
Then at the end, when the two leads, despite their stupidity, uncover the truth, the Ship A.I. explains everything and then blows them out of an airlock since "they just aren't fun anymore."
The next scene, we get carbon copies of the dopey leads running past in their own version of a sci-fi B-movie that they think is very important, but is really just another show for the computers to enjoy.
