Jamdani Weaving Process

Unlike other forms of handloom weaving, Jamdani has always been the work of two weavers - the ustad or master and his apprentice. The two must work in unison to weave the perfect patterns. This video looks at the labour-intense process of Jamdani weaving.

The Jamdani Festival was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Education Dr Dipu Moni at 5 PM, on 6 September 2019, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhanmondi. The Hon'ble Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Mr K M Khalid, Mayor of Narayanganj Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and the President of the World Crafts Council Asia-Pacific Region Dr Ghada Hijjawi-Qaddumi was present on the occasion as special guests. The President of the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh Mr Rafiqul Islam chaired the inaugural ceremony. The Mastercraftspersons Award ceremony were given on the same day to honour the most gifted master weaver and apprentice for their skills and contributions to the community.
The Jamdani Festival:
*An exhibition showcasing reproductions of century old Jamdani fabrics and sarees, as well as original antiques loaned from museums and private collections from Bangladesh and abroad.
*Screening of 4 short films exploring the designs and weaving process of Jamdani, and the life of a weaver.
*Live demonstrations by weavers.
*The Mastercraftspersons Award ceremony to honour the most gifted master weaver and apprentice for their skills and contributions to the community.
*A seminar discussing the past, present and future of Jamdani
