The Worst Things That Happened in the Roman Colosseum

  • What did the gladiators actually do inside the Roman Colosseum? What was the life of a Gladiator like? Would you survive the battle inside the Roman Colosseum? Let's look at what happened inside a Roman Colosseum during the rule of the Roman Empire!
The great amphitheater that we know as the Roman Colosseum was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian around 70-72 AD. Like any big stadium, it was for the public’s enjoyment, where folks could watch various games. Except the games were quite different at times from the kind of games we watch these days.
This entertainment enthralled the crowds and these games were sometimes said to be the “bread and circuses” that pacified the masses and directed their energy away from life’s difficulties.
Today we’ll look at just how far the Romans went in entertaining the people, in this episode of the Infographics Show, The worst things that happened in the Roman Colosseum.

Just that it doesn’t happen in real life, because we are mentally much weaker to watch violence in reality today. They were mentally and physically stronger, they had the will to conquer, which means people were much more healthier than today. Which is why they built a huge empire.

I know this comment may trigger some people. It seems that some people does not fully understand the topic about Roman Colosseum....First the so called "Roman Colosseum" in the video is Amphitheatrum Flavium or Flavian Amphitheatre/Colosseum in english which is located in Roma. However there were totally 230 amphitheatres/ Colosseum widely scattered around the area of the Roman Empire. Most of them is in western province of the empire, for the eastern part of empire, because of the population and culture were mainly dominated by Greeks and Greeks enjoy drama and chariot races. Therefore, you mainly see chariot Circus and theatre in eastern part of empire, which means that gladiatorial game were only popular in western province. The empire would not throw innocent people to feed animals, the only people were in was really really bad criminals. For the gladiators, they nearly never fought to death as gladiator were seem as idol, superstars like todays MMA and WWE star to the people. The death rate of gladiator is about 5%,the only unlucky who die was mainly due to botches and accidental kills.Of cause,if tthere is some evil and bloodthirsty emperors ,human eating and ancient battle royale will surely happen.During the later year, since Roman empire fully adopted christianity and lack of money of empire,Roman people were disgusted by the brutality of the barbaric games, they rather go to church and watch chariot races. The Colosseum became a public market for people to buy daily necessities. Christianized emperors officially forever banned all type of games and event seen in the past as it violate the core value of bible and christianityand detrimental to social atmosphere.
(Although there is still record of gladiatoral game in early day of byzantine empire/eastern roman empire as the eastern empire successfully reclaim Italy and destory the ostrogothic kingdom in about 523 AD)
How you learn something from this:)

Actually it was quite rare for gladiotors to die in a match. Fighters (or referees) could stop the match if they wanted, and take the loss. Fights to death were likely to happen and the end of the gladiators career, as they had at that point already brought enough money for their owners. We also know that there are few times when the crodws got very angry as legend status gladiators killed each other, becouse people loved to see them fight.

One thing that's really important to remember about gladiators is that it was super rare for them to die. Not for any moral reasons, just because they were extremely expensive to train up and use in the arenas. However, one of their duties were that if it was their time to die, they were to be examples to Romans on how to face and accept death with Roman honor.
Also side note, gladiators were fat because it's protection for internal organs.

Shame that many people still enjoy watching it though, I really can't understand how 2 or more people fighting is even a little enjoyable. Luckily the level of violence is changed though, I'm glad that humanity in general has developed and stopped going crazy over fights in excitement to the point where people fight to the death.

-The Roman Arena was home to brutal blood and wine, people cheering at the sight of blood being spilled and gladiators being worshipped.
-Modern Day sports is just a bunch of people wearing special outfits, sweating and getting an award for it.
We really have grown out of the time of blood and win to smiles and awards.

That bit with Commodus and people without feet is even better than described here. Apparently he made them be laid out in the Colosseum in the shape of a human body. Commodus was in the middle and he proceeded to club everyone to death. And then he proclaimed that he killed a "giant".

in reality, roman gladiators very rarely died and when they did, it was either by command of the emperor or of non-battle causes and deaths were in fact banned unless otherwise noted by the emperors. gladiators were treated more like superstars, were well fed, had personal physicians, crowd favorites could have "sponsors", could help advertise local business, sometimes could be set free, and often had better lives than other slaves. they were treated so well in fact that some other slaves begged to become gladiators. the coliseum could also become a naval arena in which the worse that would happen to the gladiators is drowning and they also had chariot and foot races. the more famous survive a lion attack mostly pitted large animals like bears and lions against large imported guard dogs like and ancient and extinct breed of mastiff to prove the dogs strength, not too many occasions where a slave/prisoner was faced with a lion, and when it did happen, it was mostly accidents and the animals were held off. like the fighting, only rarely did the emperor allow the deaths of the gladiators to animals

The Roman Colosseum was mainly used for mock army and naval battles to celebrate Roman victories. Most of the human and animal slaughter occurred at the Circus Maximus on the outskirts of the city.

"Prometheus" (Προμηθέας) name means "he who thinks before doing something" (προ + μήτις (pro + metis) = pre-thinking, meaning forward thinking, anticipatory, farsighted). His brother was named "Επιμηθέας", meaning "he who thinks after doing something". Prometheus embodies the smart people who think forward and, because of that, they progress and with them all of mankind. His punishment means that society, especially the ones in power, do not like change and hence tend to dislike forward thinking disruptors. The eagle is Zeus' symbol, not Zeus himself. Prometheus was freed by Hercules, who broke his chains and ended his martyrdome.
