  • Here I describe different ways to identify proximal and distal biceps ruptures. I talk about the Ludington test, the Hook test and a test I developed and like to use. Also, I will talk about what to do with a finding of biceps ruptures.

    Hi Paul, just as you have shown bicep rupture over here, can the same happen with the tricep lateral head specifically? What if there's a dent/cleft in the portion of the tricep lateral head, what could that be associated with? The dent/cleft was noticed suddenly one day (3 weeks back) and has more or less remained the same (might have grown in size a bit). There was no noticeable injury during any of the tricep exercises and no injection in that area for over 6 months (took yellow fever injection last sept over there though). Also, no pain in the elbow. And slight pain when doing one hand over head tricep extension. Any suggestions would be helpful. Have setup an ultrasound next week, but afraid of it being some sort of tear which will need surgery and downtime. Please advice. Thanks.

    So I tore my proximal at age 18, I'm now 32 and ever since, my entire left arm has started to come apart. Can I still get i reattached?

    I tore my proximal, i have a popeye bicep now, after the third day im lifting weights (light) and feeling great, no pain, is it ok what im doing or should i let it rest, thanks doc! Im waiting to get an mri

      So, I would rest it for a bit. Many people can live on without any issues if the tear is proximal. Research shows that there can be some soreness for up to 6 weeks but can still be functional. Best of Luck!

    I was at the gym today. There are two squat racks and I was using one of them. The rack next to me was vacant until a guy showed up and decided to do some bicep curls. Mind you, the bar weighs about 45 lbs and he added a plate to either side (135 Lbs total). He didn't do any warm ups curls/any other exercises that I saw. I minute passed and he was holding his lower bicep.
    "Are you okay?"
    "You see that (shows me arm). I just tore my bicep" He said in a calm voice
    He proceeded to the bathroom, then came back and said "oopsies", and left. Was he in shock or something? It looked like a tennis ball was coming out of his arm and he didn't even react. So, nonchalant. Probably has done it before.. yikes!

    Hey thanks for the information. I got injured a week ago. When the injury happened I felt a pop and then I was in agony for a day or two. The pain has since went away but still feels sore when I flex it. I felt most of the pain in my forearm area and it has turned yellow over the last couple of days, which indicates it’s healing. I’ve since had no problems lifting light objects but I’ve been holding off on the heavy lifting. I can flex and supinate with no problem. The only thing I’m worried about is that my left bicep, which is where the injury occurred doesn’t look like it’s in the normal position like there is a tad bit more of space between the bottom of the peak and the forearm around the brachialis area. I did the hook test and I still feel like it’s connected but I can’t feel the connection in the place I’m supposed to. I’m also afraid to go have a doctor look at it because i hope to God it can just heal on its own. Thanks.

      Im afraid to tell you thar you probabbly tore your distal tendon. If its yellow its not really healing, its a body´s response called hematoma after inflamation. Did you go to the doctor?
      Salute!

      @@jorgemelendocordoba8044 I went to the doctor back in July yes and have been seeing him for follow ups. I had an MRI done and it said I have a full distal bicep tear but here’s the problem. When I saw the doctor he felt my tendon and said it felt really strong like it hadn’t been torn. I let it heal up the last 4 months and have felt the arm getting stronger but I still get some discomfort when I flex my bicep like near my wrist, not sure if that’s because the discomfort I feel is shooting up from the tendon. The bicep doesn’t look as deformed as it did but I can tell it’s still not back in the original position, like there’s still some spacing there. It’s not as bad as it was fortunately. There was initially 3 cm of retraction the MRI said. The doctor wanted me to rest it up for like 6-8 weeks and didn’t feel that I needed to have surgery. I’ve been working out again and lifting heavier objects, but am still taking it easy. My doctor said the MRI can give false readings and they aren’t always definitive because he said the tendon doesn’t appear to be ripped off the bone. He said it might’ve tore off but he can’t tell for sure unless he opened me up, he just felt it and said it feels strong like it wasn’t detached. It kind of left me annoyed and confused because although he said the tendon felt as strong as a cable it still left me wondering what the hell I did to myself.

      @@jorgemelendocordoba8044 yeah frankly I thought back a few months ago that I would go for a second opinion and that this dude was incompetent but I kept him just because my insurance wasn’t giving me many other options. My doctor they say is one of the best if you can believe that and actually did surgery on my father who had a freak accident in September when he fell down some stairs and tore both of his triceps so he performed surgery on my dads left arm. I’m able to do the hook test better now with my left arm, whereas before it was harder to feel the tendon where it was supposed to be located so I guess that’s progress. I know I’m flabbergasted and perplexed as to what the hell I did to myself. Maybe it was a partial tear or something? I did feel a pop followed by severe pain in the forearm when the injury first happened in June. Thanks for your kind words and wishes.

      @@themaverickfiles2020 I had a partial tear and a complete tear (two weeks later) and it may help you to know that I heard a pop in the partial aswell. I did the hook test and I could touch it , it was like a string. Once I broke it I couldn’t feel it (I could touch it because it was in my arm but it was unattached.

    for some reason, my right hand hurts every time i lift weights but my left hand is fine but when i did the hook test, both biceps were still intact and there were no tears so what does this mean?

    • @OrthoEvalPal
      @OrthoEvalPal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could have a strain to the tendon or muscle. If it persists, you should have it evaluated by a medical provider

    I caught myself 2 years in a sudden strong force and bruised my arm badly. It hurt but it didn’t hurt to the point I thought I needed a doctor. After it healed I noticed I have a bit of the “popeye” arm in rolled upward towards my shoulder.....I feel as if I’m doing the hook test correctly and I’m able to get the hook and all this time later I have no pain and full range of motion.....is there another reason to why my bicep shortened other than a rupture?
