    Sun Valley in one sentence:
A heavily commercial area, the location and price are favorable - but most of the actual neighborhoods could be better.

Looking on Google Maps, Sun Valley is in the shape of a fish. It’s heavily industrialized with factories and warehouses. The name Sun Valley is about as generic a name as you can get for a place in SoCal, but there’s actually a few interesting tidbits about it. Let’s check it out.
The Vulcan Materials Company and Vulcan Landfill are on the north side of the Golden State Freeway which passes through Sun Valley. This is one reason why Sun Valley, by valley standards, has more affordably priced houses.
Set apart from the urban vibe of Sun Valley is an unofficial nature sanctuary. The Theodore Payne Foundation, started in 1960 by English immigrant Theodore Payne, continues to carry on his legacy of preserving native plants to California. Plants are available for purchase and workshops are offered to teach plant owners how to care for them.
    Speaking of native plants . . .
The Tongva/Fer-nan-deno used to live here and had a village called, Wixanga, from the word wixar, which in English means thorn or prickle.
Wixanga meant something like “place or canyon of the thorns."
There were and are a lot of prickly pear cacti in this area.
The Spanish name for this area, Canada de las Tunas eventually became La Tuna Canyon, until the early 1950’s when citizens chose the name Sun Valley.
California State Senator Charles Maclay bought a large swath of land in the San Fernando Valley from Sunland Boulevard, all the way to Chatsworth. East of Sunland was Rancho San Rafael, a large parcel of land granted to José María Verdugo by the Spanish Crown. These names are still represented in city streets and schools in the area.
Old Trapper's Lodge,USE GOOGLE CLIPS a California Historical Landmark, also used to be here. It pays tribute to its pioneer creator John Ehn who wished to share his sense of the Old West with his life size folk sculptures.
The artwork, however, was moved from the original site in Sun Valley to Pierce College.
Another landmark in Sun Valley is Wat Thai of Los Angeles. It is the largest Thai Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles. Open to the public, the temple has numerous services throughout the day.
Overall, the population here is youthful and diverse. However, only one out of ten of Sun Valley residents aged 25 and older had earned a four-year degree by the year 2000, a low percentage for both the city and county. It is also an area with a lot of public and private schools. Polytechnic High School is one.
Fortunately, for all the youth here, there are three recreation centers in Sun Valley, one of which is a historic site. Behind me is the Stonehurst Recreation Center
After enjoying the outdoors, popular places to eat include El Caporal, Ay Papa Que Rico, Daniel’s Tacos, and 786 Degrees, clips!!! an award-winning pizza eatery which was featured on ABC and received Yelp honors for its innovative pizzas.
Due to its location at the base of the Verdugo Mountains, Sun Valley is prone to flash floods.
Feb 20, 20045 a flood destroyed part of a block on Tujunga Avenue and killed an LA man when a sinkhole 30’ deep opened.
Still, it is a densely populated area both for its relative affordability and its easy access to the rest of the valley and Los Angeles. If you're frustrated by the high cost of housing, you might want to give Sun Valley a glance.
