During the times i didn't feel that i had time to take brush in hand , i would look at the colors of things that surrounded me . Then i would, in my mind , choose which colors i would choose to match / mix those colors. I find myself again doing the same. It is amazing to me that now there is an app.
Yes, everything can be computerized and simplified now 😊
Though I love doing the same thing you described, if only just to practice matching colors (and even improving the colors I see in real life - into more interesting ones!
Thank you Liron for the introduction to this fantastic web site. My neighbours and i meet every week to paint together so this will be the topic for this week. Keep safe.
I checked out the app and then commented that it would be useful if we could see the tonal values on the samescreen as the photo. He responded he would make that change in the next upgrade. 👍🏻
Awesome, happy to hear! Eugene's really on it (:
It's an app he first developed to help himself paint more easily, and it shows.
this was exactly what I was looking for ... thanks for posting!
What a cool app, I struggle with light and midtones a lot.
It's super helpful for tones indeed! I'm sure it'll benefit your process then (:
This is so handy! I'm such a beginner so I reckon this would really help. I got some schmincke watercolours and I think this would really help me get to grips with learning to mix these very vibrant paints. :D
Thank you for sharing this and thank you so much to the creator who created this!
Looks amazing but approach with caution! Might be tempting for beginners to jump straight in with this but that would be like doing driving lessons in an automatic. For someone more experienced, who has made mistakes that the app could help correct, though, this looks off the charts. I guess it also helps if you understand that values are far, far more important than colours.
In my landscapes I tend to only use three primaries and maybe one or two other colours as herbs so I won't be religiously following all the colour recommendations (which might give a colour by numbers look). But before painting I can scoot all over the photo looking at all the recommendations looking at which one blue, one red and one yellow come up most often and pick my colour scheme that way. After that I make do the best I can with my chosen ingredients (or I cheat by deleting all the colours I won’t be using from my palette!).
But what I'm looking forward to most is the tonal values feature. For portraits especially and in conjunction with some of the techniques in the Liz Chaderton book on portraits it looks invaluable. I'd be painting in three layers of gradually darkening values but I wouldn't care too much about exactly which colours to use and would use variegated washes with all sorts of random colours in them.
In both the landscape and portrait examples, these wouldn’t be changes to my style - just using a tool to make painting in that style easier.
I guess that at some point Eugene will want to monetise this. I hope it goes well for him and that this period of free use generates plenty of future business.
Thank you for sharing. What a great tool! And I LOVE your painting!
Thank you so much 🙏😊
I have a few new awesome paintings I can't wait to share with you over the following days!!
(one of them in my Instagram stories at the moment)
Shalom, Liron. I've just started playing with this app. it's quite amazing. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention. it's a great help in figuring out the best mixes for achieving a color consistent with the image. I don't intend to become dependent on it, but as I refer to it, I expect that mixing the desired color and value will become more intuitive. Again, many thanks.
Liron, thank you so very much for sharing how you created your beautiful painting with the help of this app. Im excited to try it
This is an awesome app, just what I've been looking for. Thank you, thank you!
Wow! Looks useful, will check this out! 👍
Wow..
This opens up so many possibilities ❤
Thanks for this great and insightful explanation of this app...
I do not think it takes away from the artists skills, instead it can allow for more play..but I also feel, I may get lost in this rabbit hole and not actually start to paint spontaneously...but why not? Good to explore this app and think more about a picture or subject and allows for so many possibiliites!! Thanks to you and the developers of this very helpful app!!!
Thank you so much! 🙏😊
Yes, indeed - it's always about the artist, never really the tools.
I think one can do both! I have many processes where I simply GO FOR IT, and will never use any tool (including photoshop, making the photo black and white etc...). Because I have a strong vision and want to keep it safe from external influences.
But other times... I do the exact opposite, and paint SO SLOWLY and meticulously, using as many tools I can.
Do whatever the moment brings! (:
@@LironYan true that! Each kind of experience allows us to absorb more possibilities about the way we can enjoy, learn, unlearn, relearn...and your art is a great example that no matter what your journey, your 'unintentional yet distinct style' shines through....😀
This is really useful, and I appreciate you sharing this. I have had a quick look and so user friendly. Photoshop's colour picker is not working in the new version as there is a bug apparently. So happy with this app thank you :)
So happy to hear! 🙏😊 Thank you
I haven't used Photoshop in a couple of days, hopefully it didn't update yet (I think I have auto update turned off) and I won't suffer from it haha
Yep, don't let it catch you out, but if it does you can roll back to the previous version. I'm just too lazy to bother :)
thanks for the information!
I struggle with values, so this could be useful. It's clever that it is web based and not an app. I will probably not add all my colours, but wonder how it would work if I only add a set of primaries. Perhaps the glaze function might be useful then.
It will do its best to find the closest mix (:
Even small-medium differences can be quite minor in the grand scheme of things.
So far I mostly had only my primaries there (though it may be smart to add more, I may find some easier immediate mixes haha).
It only adds 31 colors, so it’s best to save results for each different photo you want to use.
Looks great but couldn’t find it in the Apple App Store. Maybe only available in US?
It’s a web app (: Simply go to the address in any browser - and that’s the app 😁
This looks so useful! I’ve subscribed to the TH-cam channel and followed a tutorial on the site but when I press START, I get a blank page. Using my iPad. Any suggestions ?
Hi! What browser do you use on iPad? Is it the standard Safari browser? The web app works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Samsung Internet. If you don't have other browser on the iPad, try to open the web app from your smartphone.
Let us know you got it to work Barbara (:
I'm sure you'll find it useful ♥
Hi, I checked out the App. In order to use the mixing assist function you described, one has to register every single watercolor you own-meaning listing every color of every brand you might use. This probably would be useful for beginners primarily using a single palette, but I'm not going to invest the time. Also, the app might tell you how to mix a hue it perceives in a location in a photo, but does it take account of the influence that the surrounding colors have on your choice of pigments? Isn't it better to just learn color theory and have that knowledge in your head?
Thank you for these thoughts 🙏😊
As for the point about colors - I only add the ones I'm using most often in my palette (mostly my primary colors).
You don't have to add every single color in one go, because you probably don't intend to use them all to begin with (:
I also sometimes just add the colors I plan on using for the given painting I'm working on.
If anything, this will show you just how much you can mix with just 3-5 tubes.
As for the tool seeing the context of the surrounding colors - it's not meant to enhance the colors that wat, only help you read them.
Of course it would be best to have some experience (perhaps some theory, but I think mostly practical from practice and experimenation).
Then the tool will enhance & streamline other aspects of the painting process.
It's never about the tool, but rather about the artist using it (:
Plus, not every tool is for everyone, and that is perfectly okay
How did you manage to find this tool.
Eugene reached out to me! (:
He made this tool first to help himself have an easier painting process, and now wants to put it in front of more people.
This app helps a lot! Really easy to use. Is this an Israeli development?
I keep having crashes on my ipad when I go to add a photo. It just blanks out and takes me back to the colors page.
I will take a look and try to fix this problem. Have you tried to select a standard photo, does it also crash?
Try to import a photo on your smartphone. The web app requires an up to date web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Samsung Internet).
I have the latest version of iOS and the latest Safari on my iPad. My phone is too old and probably wouldn't work well at all.@@ArtistAssistApp
Yes if I select a sample photo it does the same thing. Could it be because I have a LOT of paint colors in my set? @@ArtistAssistApp
Hiya Liron! How you are my fren?
Joy and I are doing well. She's gets more beautiful every day.
My dear friend Chuck!
So happy to hear you and Joy are doing well 🙏😊
Keep rocking 🎸
Hi, again. After trying out this program a little more I found a couple of annoying features that may limit my use. First, the app remains on their server, so there is no way (apparently) to save your work and settings once you close the browser. Also since using it I have gotten nonstop fake virus notices trying to get me to click on a software that is not on my computer. Is anyone else having these problems?
Your comment looks like fake. ArtistAssistApp works completely in browser. There is no server-side code at all. All settings are persisted to the browser local database and are restored when the browser is reopened. Also paint sets and mixes can be shared as clickable links.
I have no idea what virus notices are you talking about. The app is open source and everyone can examine the code.
You mislead people either because you are troll or scammer.
This app is amazing...especially for those of us with partial colorblindness. What's really cool is if im not sure how you mixed a certain color (which is a common occurring issue in my case), I can just take a snapshot of your tutorial painting, use it on the app, select the part of the painting in question, and BAM, I have the recipe. Genius app. Thanks for sharing this Liron.
Great idea, I'm always asked about what colors I used!
I can now just tell people to check for themselves 😂
