  • District of Of; It is a charming town with a population of 43,754 in 2021, a total area of 330 km2, exhibiting all the features of nature, and built on an area with unique natural beauties where the sea and the land are integrated.
It is a coastal settlement built on a flat and not too wide area, which is formed by accumulating alluvial deposits carried by Solaklı River, one of the largest streams of the region, on the shore.
The highway connecting Çaykara and Of districts divides the district into two. The center to the east of Solaklı Creek, which is an older settlement, is the area where the administrative units in the district are generally located. The area to the west of Solaklı Stream has also been developed with new structures. This area is called Kalyon Mevkii by the residents of the district.
When we look at the history of the economy of the district of Of, when the Miletos people came to Trabzon and its surroundings, they did not destroy the local communities in the vicinity, they entered into commercial relations with them and bought the raw materials in their hands cheaply. On the other hand, they made huge profits by selling the goods they did not have and which they brought from overseas.
Trabzon was an important trade center of Of during the Greek Empire.
Today, the economy of the district depends on agriculture and processed tea industry. A single type of product has developed in agriculture. The activities of small tradesmen and craftsmen are sufficient only for themselves. Çaykur and private tea factories have provided employment opportunities that can be considered significant. Due to the unsuitable land structure, ruggedness and unsuitable climate, agriculture cannot be done with modern tools and more products cannot be obtained.
The industry based on tea, which is the main product suitable for cultivation, has developed. Hazelnut, which is one of the other agricultural products obtained, is not very much, but forms the livelihood of the people. Recently, with the support of the state, kiwi cultivation and trade has been carried out as an alternative product to tea. Kiwi production is spreading rapidly in the region. It is aimed to be the main source of livelihood in the region after tea.
Another livelihood of the district is animal husbandry. Cattle farming is one of the livelihoods. Milk and dairy products obtained from bovine animals find a place both in the inner-city market and in the out-of-town markets. Especially during the summer seasons, these products are obtained by animal breeders in the highlands or milk is processed and products are obtained in dairy farms with modern techniques. In sheep and goat farming, the wool and meat of the animal are generally used.
In the region, as in the whole Black Sea, fishing is also an important source of income. The riches offered by the Black Sea are utilized. Fish production is generally consumed in the domestic market.
Beekeeping, another livelihood of the region: Thanks to the rich vegetation of the Black Sea, beekeeping in the region is also developed and is among the important economic income. Honey, pollen and royal jelly are generally taken from bees. The amount of honey obtained from beekeeping in the district is approximately 72 tons per year. Places where beekeeping is intense; Dumlusu, Yazlık, Ballıca, Yemişalan, Uğurlu, sectionlü and Fındıkoba villages.
Mineral deposits in the region also contribute to the economy of the district. 12 km from the district. The copper-zinc deposit in the Dumlusu locality, located at a distance of 5 km, is being operated today. The second mine is the copper-zinc lead deposit in Gürpınar Town.
It has the climate type characteristics of the Eastern Black Sea Region. The abundance and continuity of precipitation in all seasons affects the climate of the region. The period with the highest precipitation is the Autumn season. Since the regulating effect of the sea acts as a thermostat, both daily and annual temperature differences are prevented. It is not very hot in the summer months, and freezing cold is not seen in the winter months. It is rainy in all seasons, cool in summers and warm in winters.
The district had a larger area during the Ottoman period and in the first years of the Republic. But; With Çaykara becoming a district in 1948 and Hayrat in 1990, the area of the district shrank. The district has trained many politicians and bureaucrats who have a say in the administration of the country.
It is rumored that the word "Op", which means weapon in Southern Siberian Turks, took the form of "Of" among the people, due to the fact that the region was inhabited by tribes of Turani origin and very skilled in making weapons in ancient times.
