Tub-thumping is expressing opinions in a loud or aggressive manner invariably when you're drunk. This song came out in 97 was everywhere and a must at every party. Trainspotting came out in 96 so it definitely wasn't in the soundtrack. Basically the song is about getting drunk, being sick, peeing everywhere and doing it all again while talking rubbish. Oh and pissing the night away can be taken as constantly going to the toilet, being pissed which means being drunk in UK slang and finally it can also mean doing nothing nothing with your life "pissing it all away". Us Brits seem to love a metaphor 😀😀😂
The first thing you hear in this song "We'll be singing, when we're winning" is a chant from the football terraces. Right at the end of the song, the trumpet plays a tune taken from a piece of baroque music composed for the trumpet in around 1700. All of this blended together.
Chumbawamba was an English rock band that formed in 1982 and disbanded in 2012. The band drew on genres such as punk rock, pop, and folk. The band are best known for their song "Tubthumping", which was nominated for Best British Single at the 1998 Brit Awards. Other singles include "Amnesia", "Enough Is Enough" (with MC Fusion), "Timebomb", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", and "Add Me". "Pissing the night away" would translate to "Drinking (alcoholic beverages) all night." To be pissed in England is to be drunk, to be pissed in the US is to be angry. In England, a tubthumper is a politician.
The group is from the UK, and in England the term "pissed" or "pissing" refers to "drunk" or "drinking," respectively. So in this context, the lyric _"Pissing the night away,"_ means, _"drinking the night away."_ The subsequent lyric refers to several alcoholic drinks: _"He takes a whiskey drink, he takes a vodka drink, he takes a lager drink, he takes a cider drink."_
I saw the singer say in a interview that this song was made because at the time the band members were not agreeing musically and lacking heaps of inspiration compared to how they used to be as friends in a garage playing (as teens).. the band was on verge of breaking up this is the song that bought them all back together loving music again together as a band and family
this song is a protest song in support of the liverpool dockers, to the point at the brit awards he then changed the lyrics to attac knew labour, and at the end threw cold water of the politician who was at the awards, this wasnt meant as a football song or a drinking song it was about the spirit of the liverpool dock workers
Haha, the singer was from near Middlesbrough. The Middlesbrough fans are convinced the song is about us getting relegated and promoted a lot years ago. We were seen as a yo yo.club. It certainly got claimed by the Boro fans for that reason haha
Good job I have some recommendations for reactions Blink 182 - I miss you Edward maya - stereo love Fun - some nights Gym class heroes - Stereo hearts Sum 41 - with me Avicii - Silhouettes Linkin park - with you I hope you do well ☺️👍
I missed your reaction to this! Maybe I wasn't subscribed then, but I think I was. This song came out almost ten years into my "professional" career, and I later switched careers but went back to my original one. I think my life and this song are a testament to the American Dream (even though they aren't Americans). This was a little bit of a theme song for me because I refused to be a squeaky wheel. It took decades of squandering in the ditches, but I'm finally in a pretty comfortable place. Peace, Love!!
i once got a train to a Chumbawamba gig in Bradford, UK, there was a nun sat opposite us, who got off at same stop and walked to the venue...., turns out it was Danbert Nobacon from the band - realised when he appeared on stage, still dressed as a nun lol
Love this song for it's energy. I would love for you guys to look at John Farnham, he has one of the most phenomenal voices you will ever hear!! His live performance of Help with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is something you will not regret watching. I promise, seriously, do yourself a favour😊😊😊😊
Just discovered your channel recently and so excited to see another great reaction from you guys! this song is so iconic, takes me back, but hadn't seen the music video before, thanks for sharing. Would love to see you check out Car Radio by twenty one pilots
I saw in a interview with that bands guitarist that this song was about them as a band at a point they were gonna break up. Sometimes in bands u fight get sick of eachother...
Come on England ! FIFA Football World Cup 1998, when we knew how to lose in style.....ah the good old days......😃.when everybody would get drunk after losing and sing their hearts out......priceless memories ....😃British bulldog spirit ...
In British ish slang, getting drunk is getting pissed, ergo " pissing the night away means drinking yourself drunk all night line, not running to the toilet all night.
Late to the party on this one, sorry. Must check out Leo Morrachioli's version of this. He does everything from Baby Shark to DMX. Metal style on all. You will gain many followers if they see you checking him out. Love you both, thanks for brightening my day every time I'm on TH-cam.

Originally, the song was made to support a protest by Liverpool port workers. They stood by the workers and made progressive songs.
Did alot for the striking miners at the time too..
Cool beans, a history.

This song HUGE just before I graduated college. It was everywhere....like EVERYWHERE.

Chumbawamba were an excellent band doing great music with powerful messages
Yes...so much more than this song.
Pissin the night away a memory from times before before we settled down and had children.

“Pissing the night away”
They wasn’t working class, Labour love the middle class 🤣🤣
Working class people are poor, I know from experience
@@charlieminaj2 they was working class
@@charlieminaj2 and no one loves the middle class.
It was both. Liverpool dock workers had shit to deal with, of course they’d relate to “pissin the night away” and going to a game
Now imagine a packed club with everyone belting out the chorus. This was so much fun.
