- AXBRIDGE SOMERSET | The medieval town of Axbridge is nestled between Cheddar Gorge and Weston Super Mare in the Mendip Hills of Somerset, England, Axbridge is a charming little town steeped in history. We visit Axbridge for a walking tour to see why it's such a visitor and tourist attraction.
Its story begins all the way back to Saxon times, though evidence suggests settlements in the area date back even further. By the 14th century, Axbridge was a thriving center for the cloth trade, thanks to its location on a major route to Bristol and its proximity to the River Axe. However, as the cloth industry declined, so did Axbridge's prominence.
Today, Axbridge remains a small town, but one that retains its historical charm. Visitors are drawn to its well-preserved medieval buildings, narrow streets, and friendly atmosphere. It's also a great base for exploring the surrounding Mendip Hills, the Somerset Coast, and the Cheddar Gorge, a natural wonder known for its dramatic cliffs.
Here are the top ten must-visits in Axbridge:
1. King John's Hunting Lodge: This 15th-century building, once a residence for royalty, is now a museum showcasing the rich history of Axbridge.
2. Church of St John the Baptist: This beautiful 14th-century church is a landmark in Axbridge and boasts stunning stained glass windows and an impressive tower.
3. Axbridge Farmers' Market: Held every Thursday in the town square, this market is a great place to find fresh, local produce, crafts, and food.
4. Rackley Llamas: Take a trek through the beautiful Mendip Hills with these gentle creatures at Rackley Llamas.
5. Hood Archery: Test your skills at this traditional archery venue, offering lessons and experiences for all ages.
6. The Anne of Cleves Tea Room: Enjoy a quintessential English afternoon tea experience in this charming tea room.
7. The Lamb Inn: This historic pub dates back to the 16th century and offers a cozy atmosphere and delicious food.
8. The Old Manor House Hotel: This beautiful hotel is located in a historic manor house and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
9. Cheddar Gorge: A short drive from Axbridge, Cheddar Gorge is a must-see for nature lovers. This natural wonder is known for its dramatic cliffs, caves, and waterfalls.
10. Wells Cathedral: Located a little further afield, Wells Cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and is well worth a visit.
Whether you're interested in history, nature, or simply soaking up a charming English atmosphere, Axbridge has something to offer everyone.

Nice to see the Union and St George's flag flying high, sadly it's not the same everywhere.
Axbridge Somerset is a very beautiful village town and it
definitely has a Medieval look about it especially with the
buildings and the local businesses this is what makes it a
great place to walk around and explore, i liked seeing the
Olde Sheriff's Office and as always another awesome
video of a beautiful town Axbridge Thanks.🇬🇧🤠🇬🇧
Thank you - hope you're having a lovely week!
So much architectural history, you can't wave a stick at it. Lovely town and great video.
Agreed
Axbridge Somerset.
It's very beautiful and a gem in architectural buildings as well 👍
It really is!
So few cars ! My kind of place, so many old buildings and what a beautiful church, so ornate.
Love this little Village...looks like a movie set...😊
It does!
Axbridge is not a Village, It is a Town, It's a town by royal charter and the locals are very proud of that. Somerset's smallest town.
@@diskellyheron7382 it is actually the set for the tv series "A good girl’s guide to murder"
How refreshing to see the Union Jack and St.Georges Flag flying in an English town on a civic building, marvellous.
Amazing and very Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So much
Just amazing considering the weather. I would have liked to have seen the inside of 'Ye Old Pub' (I love 'em) 🍺
It’s always tricky to film inside places - sometimes they get real mardy 😮🤣
What a beautiful town can’t believe I have missed this place we stay not far away we will be visiting there next time we are on holiday looking forward to seeing what other videos you show of the area thanks neil
Really enjoyed this visit. A lovely little town. Enjoyed lanes and alley ways. Not crowded. Thanks.
Love ambridge it's a lovely old village !! I lived in Chadder for many years and always enjoyed spending time in Axbridge ! Definitely worth a visit !❤❤
It is a real wonder they are still standing considering what they are made of, fantastic.
Loved this, we live locally and know Axbridge well. You could try Shaftesbury in Dorset, another beautiful town, and of course Wells. Frome is also very interesting with some beautiful villages nearby, Mells and Nunney with it's old castle are also definitely worth a visit 😊
Great suggestions thank you I will do!
Visited this week loved it 💕
What a lovely place Neil, thank you for the tour.
My pleasure
Great little village eh!
What an enchanting town. I wonder how old that church is.. ?✝️🙂
Since I’m American I have silly questions. The roads are narrow and it seems the cars go nice and slow but the walkways are also narrow and a bit scary to me. I would think you must be very careful especially with children when walking in these narrow streets. Also do cars normally park on these streets and is that ok? Looks like a lot of trouble to go around them when they are blocking the way.
Lol😂
The double yellow lines on the road means no parking! Perhaps the cars were just picking someone up or leaving some shopping. You can drive around Axbridge we know it well, and always park outside the old part of the town and walk in to the pub! Pavements generally no problem, but not easy if you have babies or need mobility aids.
😎😁
🔥
❤️❤️❤️
Look at those tiny door ways, how would you ever get your furniture in,
After watching A good girl’s guide to murder, i would like to visit this place someday one day
I was really enjoying this video until said kilometers.
ok
