Wanted to say thanks for posting. I had to replace the parking brake switch and this video helped a lot in figuring out how to open up the gear selector area.
The main reason he did this was to run the air duct to the rear since not all models have it. I had been wondering if I could do this on my Jetta. Now I know. The console armrest was missing to begin with. A better title would be console upgrade or replacement.
