    i have some years experience as a rally mechanic and i have seen tarmac tires being shaved (for that straight contact patch) but i have never seen this before.

      @SupernovaSpence 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive never seen it before either. We had a siping servicr at the shop i worked at. I personally wouldnt even sipe though. I just have a winter set and a summer set. Between the two, i get about 3 summers and 3 winters and thats just about how old tires shoukd be before the recommended discard date anyway. Saves money, and i dont chew up a perfectly good set of tires! Maybe it grips better, but with friction comes wear.

      @xenonram 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Observing Rogue wasted time and fuel? Lol. It wouldn't take any extra time. You have to do each tire individually, regardless of whether the other tie on the axle is in the air or propped up on a tire. Even if it did take extra time and fuel, I don't think anyone would care about an extra half a cup of fuel.

      Andrew Delashaw. Time & money are precious. Unless you're enjoying yourself, meditating, or just thinking, if you can reduce the time to do something, like bundle, or be more efficient, and there's no real extra risk, then I say, go for it. Time should be used to make money or happiness, or to sort something out. If scientists found, perfected, and marketed the cure for aging, so we could live forever, I don't think we would be having this conversation. Then again, even with forever, let's try to get things done sooner, if it won't dramatically cost safety & quality.
      Then there's fuel. I'm loyal to BEVs & Turbine Hybrids, and making my own fuel. But even if I was doing this on battery power alone, I would try to do as many wheels at once, as possible. And do to the time & money costs of fuel, and the possible severity of it's environmental impact. I don't take burning any lightly. It better be for a good reason, or a good time. In my opinion.

      Yes. At Team O'Neil, they have some cars where they disable TC, ABS, Stability Control, and other vehicle electronics because in that type of driving it can sometimes be a hindrance.
      Also, they have a racing seat, full cage, and racing harness in this car, so the airbags are disabled because they would be a useless explosion.

      +Tyler Linner - you have no idea how much I appreciate the small simplicity of your comment. Since you've visited, the comments have gone to hell, haha, and your comment is one of only a few comments with sanity.
      Canadian Rally Championship uses tires of all sorts, except studs aren't allowed in Ontario and WRC-style studded tires aren't legal in Quebec. To get any sort of grip, you have to have tractionized or studs for rally levels of speed.
      But, the problem becomes rallies like the Rally of the Tall Pines, where sections of the rally are on gravel and other sections are on snow and other sections are on ice. Getting grip on these different surfaces is a trade-off. You can't use tractionized tires at Tall Pines because they will melt and studded tires like WRC has is not legal. So, you use street-legal DOT winter tires without studs. That's what you would have seen, most likely.

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we did some used tires but little pebbles and sand particles get stuck in between the sipes of winter tires... Then if you put them on the tractionizer, they will bend and damage the little tacks on the wheels. It took a long time with pliers to get the tacks straight and happy again, but some are chipped and broken. Since then, we only use new tires.

    • @falconautosport7881
      @falconautosport7881 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gravel and dirt are a different surface. You're comparing apples and oranges to pears and plums.
      The big blocks on the gravel and dirt do work well, yes. But that's for gravel and dirt, and sometimes snow. These tires are dedicated just for ice usage.

    • @Teamoneilrally

      Might improve wet handling a little, but DEFINITELY causes much faster tire wear. We only use this for ice racing when studs aren't allowed.

    You do realize, if the speedometer reads off the transmission, that because of one wheel being locked up, it actually will spin twice as fast as the driveshaft. So your wheel is really going 40mph, unless you speedometer reads off the wheels.

    • @falconautosport7881

      In some countries like USA and Canada, ice racing tires are not permitted to have studs. This is the best way we can get grip. Studs often damage roads, so rally racing organizations don't allow their competitors to use the studs.

    any tips for studded tires? (road legal studs)

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are different studs available, we've really been liking the square-tipped ones on Nokian tires this year over the normal round-tipped studs. The length of the stud should just protrude from the rubber for street use, if you go oversized for racing they will work great for a little bit but tend to fall out pretty quickly... Some folks add glue to the stud holes, but it can really gum up your stud gun. If you find a better way to keep oversized studs in let us know! Oh also you should install studs when the tire is new, if the tires is used there is always some sand or debris in the stud holes... When you install studs and drive around that can work through the carcass and you can get flat tires pretty easily. It's a gamble you might win, but we've seen tires fail that way after some use.

      They usually only need to make it through a race, but some of our instructors run them all winter up here in northern NH without a problem. I ran a set of tractionized tires on an e36 BMW all winter long and it was great, but we see A LOT of snow and ice and not too much highway driving.
