Will My Boat Survive the Ship Canal? [Ep 152]

- This week I take my Narrowboat The Rum Wench down the Manchester Ship Canal from March Lock on the River Weaver to Ellesmere Port. I explain what is needed to pass a Sea Worthy Certificate and everything you need to know about taking a narrowboat on the Manchester Ship Canal MSC safely.
---------
Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy and the perfect First Mate. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Narrowboat Pirate aboard The Pirate Boat.

Ahoy, Please note that you don't NEED a VHF Radio to do the Manchester Ship Canal as you can just call them on your mobile phone, however as we had one between us, we used it. Thanks so much for watching Heidi & Bonny xxx thepirateboat.co.uk
Great vlog Heidi, what sort of speed were you travelling. It did seem much faster than on the other canals. Bonnie was such a good girl she really has slotted straight into boat life. See you next vlog
About 6 mph … The Rum Wench flies on deep water 😃🏴☠️
Hi, do you write music?
Well done Heidi. You're positive attitude to life is inspirational 👍
Aww thank you 😃❤️🏴☠️
I am proud of you for rescuing Bonny 🐾🐾
She rescued me - she is wonderful 🏴☠️😃❤️
I love that response. My beautiful Ada, a Staffie, adopted me and we are inseparable. She's a rescue too. @@TheNarrowboatPirate
It is good to see life jackets on.
Bonny is a perfect pup to travel with. You have done an incredible job training and loving her Heidi. Thanks for the wonderful video. Cheers.
Thank you so much! She can still be a bugger with the big ones 😂😂
Sat on my sofa in stitches laughing at all the brilliant innuendos - awesome humour! Only recently discovered the channel but loving the content - Happy Cruising the cut NB Pirate Heidi 🙂👍🏻
Aww thanks so much 😃❤️🏴☠️
“Take it up the ship canal”!!!!!!!
I spat my tea out. Lol
😂😂😂
Wait 'til she starts mentioning her moist bilge ! Arrrrrgh 🏴☠
What an exciting adventure for both you and Bonny. Bonny has come along so well when she meets up with other dogs. I remember the first few videos of her and how nervous she appeared to be. You were meant to be together.
Many thanks for taking the time you put into these videos and sharing them with us on the other side of the screen.
Mark
Alberta, Canada
What a brave pirate captain and first mate Bonnie to traverse the high seas and Terra incognito of the Manchester sea canal. Thanks for letting me tow along very enjoyable. ❤Stephen 😊
Aww thanks Stephen 😃🏴☠️❤️
Heidi are you getting yourself ready to join Sandra in Ireland 🤣 Your getting quite adventurous! Is the music otter pocket a new piece of music, it’s lovely. Great vlog as usual❤️ Linda from Australia
Glad to see that you have taken proper safety precautions. High winds and low freeboard could be a problem. Excellent video as always. Much appreciated. Be well and stay safe. 😊
Thanks and you too xx
Gosh, that was a good screw at the hydro- electric power station! Isn't 1st Mate Bonny a good girl? Playing nicely with the two Schnauzers not a trace of aggression - all her training is obviously working well. Thanks to all the love she gets from "mum".
You're braver than me taking a relatively small boat on that big bit of water - my hero! Thank you again for sharing your life and travels with us - stay happy, and see you next week.
Aww thank you 😃❤️🏴☠️
Fantastic adventure Heidi and the Rum Wench really showed what she was made of, brilliant!
I have been meaning to complement your musical talents. I been recording and playing for many years and your melodies and arrangements are great but I especially appreciate your sense of percussion and how to use it to accent and support the rest. Very tastefully done!!! Bon(ny! voyage ❤️
Thank you 😃❤️🏴☠️
I've always enjoyed taking it up the ship canal!
😂😂😂
Lovely we Loved it! So fun and informative! The best entertainment on a Saturday night...we save you for Saturdays you are that good!
Heidi l would love your latest music/CD how can l get this??
Cheers the Cornish crew James and Shelly
Awww thanks so much … I’ve a few more tracks to add to my website but they are not finished yet 😂🏴☠️
To be pedantic the council is CWAC ie Cheshire West and Chester. Used to be Cheshire many years ago.
I’m sure everyone knows what I meant 😂😂
Is your boat more steady in the chopping waters being deep drafted 😊
Not really as I still get blown all over the show with a big gust … they still flat bottomed
Hello Heidi ... you got to be a proper pirate on deep water in this video. I could tell you were both thrilled and a tiny bit stressed and a whole lot of cold. The Rum Wench seemed to just dance on the ship canal and I really enjoyed the ride. (I kept my life jacket on just in case.) -- You really are a teacher ... you always share the history of where you are and point out interesting things about what is happening. I love you as a person and I love the knowledge you share. Bonny is one heck of a First Mate - you two are doing right by each other. Where do I go to buy your music now? I am missing a couple. Love to you and Bonny from Gramma Lainee ... save a spot for me next week. I will be here.
Aww thanks so much Gramma Lainee, I still need to finished a few pieces yet but when I do I’ll let you all know and put them on band camp …. Thanks so much for your support 😃❤️🏴☠️
What an experience, marvellous, Heidi. Flying into Manchester again in 2 weeks. Always admired the canals, Rosalyn Australia 🇦🇺
Oh wow, have an amazing time 😃❤️🏴☠️
My First trip on the Manchester ship Channel☺ Loved it. the under water camera part was fantastic. loved the extended pole cam! be safe an happy boating Heidi & Bonnie 🐶🦜🥃🏴☠
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️ it was amazing
Can you take the ship canal all the way up to Manchester and get onto the canal network there?
Sort of … you can go part way but it’s much easier to just go on the Bridgewater canal as free and no locks and takes you all the way into Manchester …. The problem with the ship canal is it’s just a passage so no mooring …. You can mooring on the bridgewater which is a bonus 😃🏴☠️
Heidi, the way you rode those ripples as you took her up the ship canal was the highlight of my week.
Aye, 5793, i'm only here for the innuendoes !!
😂😂 they just slip out
@@TheNarrowboatPirate I'm just in awe. The fact that the ship canal was wide enough for three of you at once was simply spectacular.
Seems like a Pirate just got taken by another Pirate???
My thought exactly, more-so the £6000 for a tug off! It makes Soho sound like a bargain.
i noticed that there was enough room in that coffee for a little rum
Always but I can’t when single handed on the river … I’ll save that for the calm of the canals 😂🏴☠️
That's expensive for a tug off?🙊
I know, you can’t be blocking the navigation for them big boats 😂😂
Delightful as always. Love the travels and atmosphere of the places that you capture so well. Great seeing you with friends.
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Didn't see the Pirate Flag Hoisted ! !
Or were Customs and Excise watching ? ? { nudge, nudge, wink, wink !}
Glad you enjoyed it !
Certainly were some big Un's there !
Stay safe !
Stu xx
It was so windy I would have took off if I had that flapping about 😂😂😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Ha Ha Ha ! !
OK, when do you sail to the Caribbean?
Enough practice on big water, now ready for a big trip in search of rum and coconuts, like a real pirate 🏴☠
Oh I wish 😂😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Then I register as a sailor 😎
Another great (and informative) vlog. That was an Archimedes Screw used to generate that power. Windsor Castle has a similar setup somewhere on the grounds powering the Castle (it was Prince Philip who got that installed).
Years ago Mum used to make all sorts of fenders. She used a nylon rope that was good for ten years of UV exposure (normal nylon rope would break down after a couple of years), and she had a tweak to the normal design (of bow and possibly stern fenders) that was a few extra turns of rope where it would rub against things (lock gates, other boats), so if this got badly worn that extra rope could easily be removed and a new section added, thereby increasing the working life of the fender.
That Lister engine of yours is decent. The Rum Wench had quite a bow wave when you were on The Manchester Ship Canal. If the weather had been nicer you could have towed a few water skiers behind you!
Thanks James, your mum is a true legend and yes I didn’t even open the Rum Wench up full 😂🏴☠️❤️
Never had any doubt the Rum Wench would pass, off on a new exciting adventure, another fabulous video x
Thank you 🏴☠️😃❤️
That was epicccc 👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks for showing the behind the scenes bits for booking etc. How long did it take? Loved this one 🥰💕
About a couple of hours ish … it’s about 5-6 days by canal 😂😂
You had The Rum Wench plowing a proper wake on the Manchester Heidi. Bonny has come a long way in being a good shipmate!
She is wonderful 😃❤️🏴☠️
There's a very famous song about the Irish Navvies and their hard working life called McAlpines Fusiliers. Well worth looking up on TH-cam.
Great cruise Heidi. Loved the music Otter pocket.💚
Heidi i love any drink that has a coffee flavour. infact I love anything coffee.😁
Me too!! And thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Wow what a trip. Thank you for sharing. Great vlog as always xx
Wow. That’s was so interesting and exciting also, can’t wait till next week. Cheers

The trouble with clean energy not many can afford it wow 150 homes really going to solve clean energy , i have had quotes for solar and battery ranging from £9.500 to £18.500 , and you still need buy energy , cheaper to build
a nuclear power station keep burning the coal and diesel girl doing a grand job X ps if you ever want a ship mate i am volunteering Captain pirateboat lol add third mate after the cat or dog !!!!
Love your watching your adventures 😊
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Quite an adventure, a big change from being snug and sheltered in the usual canals
Ps no one uses VHF on the Thames so your phone will do, we found this out AFTER we bought one !
Would like to add to my bucket list a few months on a long boat , being an Aussie dont think I will get that chance
Amazing trip, I'd be nervous out on that deep water. Enjoy.
Well done Heidi and Bonny. I really enjoy your vids, including the camper van vids. very best wishes from Pete an old truck driver.
Thanks so much Pete 🏴☠️😃❤️
Was waiting for you too say bout the drink 😂 cheers !
My father was a navigator on Manchester Liners and spent a lot of time on the ship canal. There’s some wonderful then and now videos on TH-cam showing how Salford Quays has changed👍
I was at a steam punk event at the Waterways Museum this weekend.
Brilliant to see the Rum Wench going at it full speed, good for the exhaust! Bonnie looked very comfortable too, she has become a great shipmate and like her mum she likes a biggun! Safe travels, joehoe!❤🦴🥃
😂😂
Glad you weren’t fighting whitecaps. Bonnie seems more socialized. Thx for the adventure.
Thanks for watching 🏴☠️😃❤️
💜💙💚
Beautiful camera work and edit! Also very much enjoyed the area history and backstory.
Aww thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Fabulous vlog, thanks for sharing your amazing adventures xx
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Absolutely brilliant and informative video. Stunning. Mark. NB Lucy Ann. Golly'. X
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Very brave to go on such a big ship canal. Very well done ❤
Thank you so much!
🏴☠️You & Bon are salty navis now! 🦜🚢
😂😂🏴☠️
Ahoy Cap'n and FM Bonny- yay I've finally caught up watching yer fab vlogs. I loved the van travels with Sandra ( hope she's back safely in Ireland enjoying the rain 😆) am looking forward to more high jinks on the 'high seas'! I'd just like to say a BIG thank ye for keeping me entertained and 'sane' whilst i was in hospital for 4 lonnng weeks, ye made me (and a few nurses) laugh with yer cheeky innuendos!!
😂😂 Brilliant! Happy boating Captain and best wishes from Ireland.
Ps i love yer new tune, Otter's Pocket- very ambient 👍
Don't forget to wear yer life jacket ye rebel! ❤🌈🏴☠️
Awww get well soon xxxx and thank you 😃🏴☠️
I'm doing this trip Mrs. This vlog is well handy. This wind is pretty bad. Hope you're tied down. ❤❤
Whooop you will love it 😃❤️🏴☠️
Cor thats an adventure and a half!! What weather, I had it on the heights of Exmoor, went down there for a few days, sideways rain (gusting 35 mph plus) and the wet stuff was very wet and joined up. Definitely need to splice the mainbrace, harden down the reefing points n ensure yer rollocks are safely stowed! Not to mention the ships cat, or in your case the ships dog plus any extraneous bits of stuff like brass monkeys, parrots, and Spanish galleons! Yo ho ho n a bottle o rum Jim lad. Shades of Robert Newton this (used to love that black n white film Treasure Island when I was a kid). Keep safe you 2 on the high seas/Man'r Ship canal. Smuggler Frank 😀❤😏🚢 PS Don't think much of their ship emoji, looks more like a lifeboat sailing on a blue cake!
😂😂 thanks so much again for your funny comments Frank 😃🏴☠️❤️
Hi, this is John from NB Steve. You mentioned a lack of waves to (play with) experience, if you are ever "down south " go to Teddington Lock from Lyme House or the other way round . There's plenty of waves and that's without big boats, FYI the waves are bigger at Lyme House so you have the option of getting used to them starting at Teddington or the SHOCK of finding them straight away at Lyme House. Either way, it's all good fun, a bit scary but not dangerous.
One thing to look out for is if you have a water spread of 3 mph, don't forget the water is probably doing 6 mph so your closing speed on anchored objects is 9 mph which is 3 times normal canal speed and you need to turn away from them much earlier. This is something we hadn't realised at first and made the journey quite interesting !
All the best, keep doing what makes you happy,
John.
It’s on my list to do that 😂😂🏴☠️
Great that "The Wench" got to go out on big water and blow out some more carbon. Bonny is a joy. We all enjoy your music. As time permits, why don't you compose a song for her? Pets all around to you girls! ;0)=
I’ll try 😃🏴☠️❤️
Great adventure Heidi. Yep kraken coffee is lovely. Have you tried the kraken cherry?. Its ok. Bit like putted cherry coke in a basic Kraken.
Oh BTW Helen, my wife bought me that Trafalgar rum you had last week from my birthday. Very nice very simular to Black Ops rum. That is lovely if you haven't tried it. Check out the bottle on Google you will love it. I have a few scattered around with little lights in.
Safe travels x
Yes I’ve tried most of them now 😂😂
Took us right back to when we did the trip, the other way round. Your description is spot-on - exhilarating!
I loved it, even with them very strong winds 😂😂
I remember seeing ships going through the fields as a kid, grew up in that area.
One day...
Thanks for bringing the memories back.
Thanks for watching 😃🏴☠️❤️
I really enjoyed watching your video from here in sunny Cyprus. We are ex pats and also ex shared ownership narrow boaters. It was great to see where we had previously moored up in Elsmere port. It seems that when you moor there you actually become an exhibit of the museum! Thank-you.
Aww thank you …. The weather here is terrible at the moment 😂😂🏴☠️
Is having a functioning cannon part of the sea worthy certificate? The lookout on the fore-deck at 17.48 could do with a big bag of chips. Very interesting episode. Great.
😂😂
"Dreamed a dream, by the old canal, kissed my girl, by the factory wall, dirty old town, dirty old town". A friend at college nearly bought a huge wide beamed old wooden coal barge, it was £150. You were basically buying the diesel engine in it. We talked him out of it! Used to work in and old factory building above the Rochdale canal in town and could walk to the Bridgewater canal and down that to Stretford and home to Firswood. The legs were younger then and the land next to our street was a farm.
Ooh they may be interested in the next video I’m editing then as it’s historic boats 😃🏴☠️
Went to college in Salford and use to pass the docks. We had a girl who could drink the dockers under the table. The local pub had sawdust on the floor. Now all the warehouses are condos and the cranes all still, and painted red, the industry gone - "I met my love, by the gasworks wall, dirty old town, dirty old town."
Oh wow, thanks for sharing 😃🏴☠️❤️
Never had a coffee kraken, it's not easy to find here. Always used to purchase a big bottle of kraken when flying back to Spain. Love your plaque "rum before 10", here if you pick the right cafe, you can have a coffee with rum along with your croissant for breakfast. I think you were fortunate not to have a large ship pass you as the wash would have scared the cr*p out of you, those narrow boats are not so stable 😂
Was that a new piece of music, The Otter’s Pocket? Love your music but sometimes takes a while to translate UK to US jargon on the titles.
Found your channel and subscribed straight away loved your video. Now I am working backwards of all your videos xx❤
Aww thank you 😃🏴☠️
What an adventure indeed. Wow you were moving ! Brilliant. Thank u for sharing this. Best wishes
Aww thanks for watching and commenting Trevor ❤️🏴☠️😃
That was an exciting thrilling video. Well done to you and Bonny for finishing that journey through the Manchester Ship Canal.
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Thanks Lovely Heidi for taking us along on this fantastic Pirate adventure on the Manchester ship canal with your friends on their boats. It was lovely to see Little Bonny playing with her new friends which shows that she is really enjoying life with you and you've shown her that life is for having fun, so well done you. Thanks also for the very interesting historical info'. I hope that you and Little Bonny are doing well. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thanks so much Stevie 🏴☠️❤️😃
Enjoy,your journey!!
Stay Safe!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🫂🫂🫂
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this window into a world that is so different from my life here in California. It looked like you were going really fast compared to your speed on the canals. As always Bonnie is a delight to see.
Haha yes it’s a whole different ball game on deep wide water 😃🏴☠️
Blimey good effort...I went on the Gloucester n Sharpness and that was big, ship canal though is another level...Nice one Heidi👍
Thanks Dave 😃🏴☠️❤️
Ahoy there! 6 grand for a tug off? Disgraceful. It's only twenty quid in North Wales! Oh, wait, my bad. Different thing. Anyway, glad you passed your shipworthy test. Loving your adventures. I patreon someone else but am going to switch to you. Much more entertaining. Safe journey.
Lmao 😂😂😂😂
Lovely video as always and Bonnie looks so settled and happy xx
Size is relevant, no doubt you feel pretty small in comparison to the size of the Manchester Ship Canal, but in 1970, a group of us venture scouts went up the Thames in camping punts, they were 22 foot long, by 2 foot wide and about 18 inches deep. Three punts in those Thames locks and we felt like matchsticks in a toilet bowl. Saw Concorde doing a test flight, sonic boom included and saw 2001, a Space Odyssey, which had just come out, in Oxford. Went passed the sign that stated, Not Navgable Beyond This Point. All good fun, graduated to narrowboats a little later on. Have fun, take care.
Oh wow 😃❤️🏴☠️
Another great video Heidi!! Informative as always.
Yay, thank you!
All the ships I've been on were too big for the Manchester Ship Canal. Done Suez 4 times but other ships I sailed on were too big for Suez.
Oh wow amazing 😃🏴☠️❤️
HAAAARRRGGG.... BE A PROPER ARMADA YA ALL CRUISING THAT SHIP CANAL!!. BLAST ME CANNON SHES A WIDE WATERWAY TO BE A EXPLORING. BATTEN DOWN THEE HATCHES, WRANGLE UP THEM MAST TIES, VHF AHEAD THERES A FLEET A SKALLIWAGS HEADIN THERE WAY...LOLOL!! MAY IT BE A QUEST OF A LIFETIME HEIDI🏁🏁🏁🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠⚓⚓⚓⛵⛵👍👍☠☠🤙🤙🙏🙏
😂😂😂🏴☠️
So exciting! what a great trip! Yes, here in the Pacific Northwest of USA (on huge Puget Sound and up into Canada) the opposition of water current versus wind can create havoc, especially if you're trying to moor/dock your boat and one force is moving your boat in one direction and the other force is moving your boat in the ANOTHER direction and you have only one engine and one prop and YIKES! But we all help each other, and it's way ok to simply back out and start over, no egos involved. I just looked online on Google Earth about your journey. Wow. What an adventure. You sure are finding them. :-) Good on you! Oops, a nuclear power plant on the left ... we have those in the USA too ... we need to dump them! Go solar and wind. No Heidi, don't you be skipping anything! We want it all. 🙂
It’s not nuclear thankfully …. That would be very scary to live next to one of those 😃❤️🏴☠️
We played the cheers game. Every time you said “ship canal”, we had a drink. Couldn’t stand up at the end of the vlog. 😀
😂😂😂
Proud of you as Punch I was. Brilliant, Heidi... so pleased for you and well done with all those preliminaries but worth every bit. Well done. Full of admiration I am. Dead proud. The hairs on the back of my hair were all standing up. Great stuff. Best wishes, Pam x
Aww thank you 🏴☠️😃❤️
Are you off to the port museum 😊😊😊
Thanks for the information regarding the necessary paperwork and associated costs. I travelled up the Manchester ship canal many years ago on a commercial ship. Looking forward to visiting Chester and the Anderton boat lift in the next few months, on our canal boat Andante. Keep up the good work, cheers.
Have a wonderful time 😃🏴☠️
$6k for a Tug - I hope it comes with a happy ending for that price ;)
😂😂
Hi Heidi are you getting ready to go to join Sandra in Ireland🤣 Another great adventure and vlog. Is the music Otter Pocket a new piece it’s is lovely. ❤️ Looking forward to next week adventure.
I’ve did that a couple of years ago 😂
Myer's Original Dark Rum and a bit of water.🏴☠🙈🙉🙊
Cheers 😃🏴☠️
The animosity between Manchester football supporters and Liverpool supporters, and indeed the dislike/ distrust between Mancunians and Liverpudlians in general, dates back to the construction of the Manchester ship canal. Manchester were not happy with the trans shipment costs charged by the Port of Liverpool so decided to dig the big Ditch, Bypassing Liverpool totally . The entrance / exit being on the other side of the river Mersey at Runcorn.
We came onto the Ship Canal at Runcorn, it’s where the Weaver meets the Ship Canal … you could go a lot further into Manchester itself and all the way to Liverpool the other way
Thanks for vid Heidi, glad you finally found a canal that your bottom doesn't drag along(mind out the gutter please 😂).
😂😂😂
Coffee Kraken’s our favourite. Coffee and rum, what’s not to love 😃
Cheers 😂🥃🏴☠️
Omg I thought you were meant to be the pirate 50 quid for a certificate and 50 quid to use the canal I think the pirate was robbed lol
It’s 5-6 days cruising and lots of diesel to go via canal and not half as much fun 😃🏴☠️
Well Heidi I have watched all your videos in a week, loved following your adventures,
You are such a breath of fresh air, looking forward to following you in real time now instead of being seasons behind 🤣 Thankyou for all your hard work, your filming and content is amazing 🤩
Thank you so much! And for staying with me through them all 😂😂 it’s great to have you onboard 🏴☠️
Couldn't imagine having to pay £6,000 to get tugged off!
😂😂 can’t be blocking that navigation
Hi Heidi little tip for you 😊, I noticed you had half a cup of coffee.Have you tried pressing the button twice with the same pod you can have a normal cuppa, Love the vlogs Bonny is coming on well now x
I love strong black coffee 😃 if I go to a cafe I get an americano with half the water or a double shot … it’s the hot hit I need and then there is more space for rum when required 😂😂😂 but thanks so much for the tip 😃🏴☠️❤️
Heidi, your tune ‘Otters Pocket’ sounds brilliant!
Thank you, I still need to finish it 😂😂
Keep well out of the way of the ships, they move very quickly and when they come close they are so huge. I remember sailing near Miami, and big ships come out of the port in Miami. First you see them way back, five minutes later they are right in front of you. It doesn’t take them long, it’s very scary they go so fast. They can’t stop on a dime, it takes them a while. Anyway, thanks for making videos, I enjoy watching every week.
Thanks for the tips 😃🏴☠️❤️
Really enjoy your adventures onthe canals and your camper van , Bonnie is so gorgeous stay safe on the Manchester ship canal Happy travels ❤ xxx
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Surely as a pirate you should plundering the MSC treasure chest… not adding to it! 😂 does seem a steep rate!
😂😂 it would have taken me 5-6 full days of cruising by canal to get to the same place so i think I saved on diesel 😂😂🏴☠️
You are an amazing lady such a lovely outlook on life l suffer from anxiety and watching your lovely videos helps me relax and escape. Keep the good work up look forward to following you more on your journeys threw the stunning country side best wishes mike
Aww thanks Mike, I hope things get better for you soon xx
