    New 981 S owner here. I used to mod my cars with mechanical upgrades, but I am done with that at my age. The cars are so good from the factory, it's almost arrogant of me to think I can improve it by throwing a parts catalog at it. I do my own work and will use OEM parts as practical. I will only mod if it's an improvement to a known issue. I added brake caliper studs to the wheel carriers to avoid the issue of cross threading regular bolts into the carrier, as an example. Otherwise, I'll keep it as stock as the motherland intended.

    I’ll admit that I am a purist. I view each model as a blend of art and science. I feel that the engineers at Porsche design these cars after years of research. They didn’t get stupid over night. If you want the newer version just go buy it. Each model has its own DNA and I view it that I am just the current caretaker.

    I agree with so much on this pod! I also think that mods generally decrease the value as most 911 buyers are so particular. That being said, enjoy YOUR car and if the mods are reversible, even better. Whatever you do, don’t try to label or make your car something that it isn’t. But I’m a fan of customization and it’s all about personal preference. Best example is all the restomod/backdate cars that are tastefully done and desirable. The opinions only really matter at time of sale/purchase.

  • @Bigmikenorthern
    @Bigmikenorthern 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    Anything that is bolt on and reversible seems to be out of the bad mod category. Also for older cars say 996 and down any suspension or brake mod seems to be perfectly fine as it’s an upgrade and most likely a necessary repair. Decals, wheels, ride height, steering wheel, seats, head lights are no brainers. Just keep the original parts with the car. I think most owners would welcome displacement upgrades like 3.6 to 3.8 while rebuilding engine. It’s things like taking a C4 to C2 or changing original colors (unless it’s a complete strip down) are mods that might be only detrimental when and if you decide to sell. Good discussion guys.

    when I bought my 99 996 C4 Cab 4 years ago it had a single din Alpine radio with a screen that slid out and tilted up every time you started the car. Drove me crazy running around town. Bought a double din replacement trim kit and a Pioneer 8500 NEX double din unit. Loaded a cutaway isometric picture of a 996 into the software as first screen. If you had an issue with a Tesla or Ford F150 type large screen that was full height of the center area, I would agree.
    The car came with "CARRIA" logo sticker on each side full length between the wheel wells. Looks OK. Car came with a matching hard top and has only been on when I bought it and one winter thereafter.
    I replaced the old headlight unit with rebuilt Bi-LED light units. This improved the night brightness.
    I am surprised that mufflers were not on your list. First mod was the Fister 996 sport exhaust exchange. Best move ever.
    Have a 2015 Turbo Cab with NO mods. Don't intend to change anything.

    OEM+ is the way to go. Wherever possible, use Porsche OEM parts from other variants of your car. Want a short shifter for your Cayman? Get the GT4 assembly. Same for wheels, brake kits, shift knobs, interior trim, etc. Factory Porsche stuff is tasteful, doesn’t detract from the value of the car, and is made very well.

    gotta say that I disagree on the ECU flash tune. I have a 991.2 S and it's just SO easy and inexpensive to wring a little more performance out of it by optimizing the tuning with a mod. I also feel that SO much of the engine tuning in EVERY modern car (that is not a hypercar) has to be done in a way to minimize emissions and maximize fuel efficiency due to regulations and CAFE rules. This often leaves a lot of performance "on the table". INTELLIGENTLY done changes can add a LOT to the car, adding very little risk, and minimal downside. ECU tuning is a goodexampoe of this. I am not talking about custom dyno tuning for 100 octane gas but "gentle" safe, modes which help smooth out throttle response and maximize performance. And before anyone calls BS, remember that the 991.2 base Carerra, S and GTS all use the exact same engine. The S has "slightly" large turbo blade (1 mm I think) and the GTS has a slightly larger turbo, but the major changes in power between the 3 levels is mostly due to tuning (boost pressure, fuel delivery, etc.) vs. mechanics. It is very easy (and fairly inexpensive to "unlock" the potential of that motor with an aftermarket tune from one of the well known/respected tuners (Softronic, Cobb, APR, M-Performance, Fabspdeed).

    Hah! The carbon fiber hits home. I have a 996 Targa, and I bought it with adhesive carbon fiber trim all over the interior. It’s real carbon fiber, but that peel and stick crap that goes over the console, doors, speakers covers, etc. Man… when I first got it, I hated it; However, now I’ve had the car for a couple of years, it’s grown on me. In a strangely endearing way, it’s grown on me because it’s very late 90’s-early ‘00’s period appropriate. Is it goofy? Yup. Would I have chosen to do this mod myself? Never! Not gonna lie guys, my hackles stood up when you started on 996 and wrapping. lol While I agree with you that it can be used to hide imperfections, most of the time it's used because the usual color you find these cars are silver, black and red. I personally can't stand the 996 in silver. It just reminds me of that decade and the boring cars that were coming out, ALL in silver so I changed mine. Now I bought my 996 Turbo S wrapped and I'm 💩 a little worrying what's under the wrap. ESPECIALLY since it had an accident reported in the front. So yeah, it's a gamble for most. For me, since I know these cars inside and out, as long as my ears and nose tell me the engine is good, I'm not gonna sweat it. ✌🏼

    I always mod cars in this order.
    1. Address any deferred maintenance / failing parts to restore the car to a reliable mechanical condition.
    2. Upgrade brakes / lower suspension up to 2" front, 1.5" rear with matched dampers springs. This allows you to extract even more of what the engine is already offering.
    3. If needed up to 2" larger wheels, however on a newer car that likely already comes with HUGE wheels, consider stickier rubber. If upgrading wheels select ones that weigh no more than your OEM as this could add unsprung weight.
    4. Intake solution of your choice (drop in, swiss cheese airbox, full kit) and sports exhaust (at least muffler all the way up to header back depending on your budget and goals)
    5. Interior / exterior cosmetics.

    Remember any wraps or decals are removable it’s not a big deal plus it could be protecting the car a little bit that’s no different than putting stickers on the rear quarter window, That’s all personal preference no different than color and a whole lot easier to change have fun with the car for crying out loud. I’m thinking of some ghost stripes on my silver Porsche but it is about picking the perfect color. Hairdryer or heat gun on a low setting you can have those decals off and nothing flat, Oh yeah great tip gasoline pulls off the sticky goo faster than anything else I’m sure the Germans were smart enough to figure that gasoline doesn’t affect the paint I did it on my 2014 removing the old rear fender guard glue.

    As far as decals go, what are your thoughts of small decals in regards to UV staining? If my car is black, and if I get a sticker for a long time is it going to discolour my car permanently if I then remove it some day?

    So here's a question. You give good advice to buy the car and build a baseline appreciation for what it is & can do, before you start modding it. Good advice. What if you buy a car that's been modded? Maybe only slightly so. Would you take it back to stock, then drive it for a while before modding it, or would you drive it as it is in order to establish that baseline?
    I'm guessing the answer is that it would depend on the mods. E.G. slammed and stances = return to stock. Short shifter = baseline your experience with the mod. Thoughts?

    • @Mr.P7318
      @Mr.P7318 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow great question as it's common to run into modded cars when you're in the market. Here's my take.
      If I intend to do mods anyway and the current owner has done some of the mods I plan on doing anyway, AND they bought quality brands (ie Bilstein, H&R, ohlins vs Ebay) then I'd learn more about who installed the parts, how many miles ago, and how the car has been used.
      If it has mods on it that I KNOW I'd need to remove in order to enjoy the car I'd look at how much time or money it would take to remove and put in the replacement that I want. If the effort to sort it out to your liking exceeds the value of the mods you DO like I'd walk away and keep shopping.

      @@Mr.P7318 Interesting take. I always think of 997/996 as completely different cars than 991/992, which appear physically huge and less steering feel. The upgrade of a 997.2 4S 9A1 motor to 997.2 GT3/RS Mezger would be a congruent move upward, and much more expensive than doing the engine conversions. I’m just not sure the next buyer would pay extra for the upgrade though, whereas the GT3/RS will probably double in value over the next 10 years.

    most taillights aren’t using film to tint they are using a rattle can
    ls swaps are awesome because when you’re Porsche engine fails you can get an aluminum 5.3l,5.7l,6.0l or 6.2l for less than a replacement flat 6 and increase the power and torque by a very noticeable amount all you have to do is trade the stock sound for a v8 sound & resale doesn’t change much.

    There's nothing wrong with an aftermarket stereo in a 996/997, or any 911 really. It's easily reversible and frankly "period correct" is only a concern for flippers. If you care most about resale to period correct folks then just swap the stereo back when you're done with it. First thing I did to my 997.1 turbo was put in a Sony XAV-9000 and it greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the car.
    Spending time worrying about resale value and avoiding doing things that make you enjoy the car is such a shame in my view. Do what you like, make it good for you, who cares what other people think? I don't give a crap about the resale value of my car cause I am not going to sell it. If I was, I'd prep it for sale before hand.
