As a full-time artist, and from current and past experiences, I've found that 99% of my business comes from my Art studio/school's physical location or from my own website. Social media never seemed to help in any way, especially not for the time spent in there. Sure, you get lots of likes and wows and hearts. Sometimes, people may visit your website or whatever... but compared to the amount of paying customers you get from an actual art studio, exhibitions and galleries... social media is truly ridiculous. Thank you for your video!
That’s great! And exactly the point I’m getting at - the general public thinks that everything is to be done online now, but I think the art world is thriving in person. In the right environment art will sell well in a gallery or studio. Glad to hear that’s working well for you 😊
As you said its become so saturated and in a way that cheapens it too, like fast fashion. Its hard to think deeply about a specific work when you're scrolling to the next thing immediately. Not like in a gallery. And also you can easily miss texture, colours, size, not like in a gallery as well. I guess it could be good for exposure, but most of the audience is probably just empty attention anyway (as you alluded to). @@erinisabellabee
Hot take: art accounts on social media are mostly visited by other artist who are looking to grow their own art account on social media. Most normies aren't going to social media to be part of the art community (have discussions, analyze, recommend, buy art). Most normies go to social media to distract themselves.
@@erinisabellabee If you're authentic or weirder than the average person, you're likely to get as much worthwhile interaction from making your own obscure website as you'll get from social media. Plus you can do whatever you want and answer to no one.
Not just Art Accounts, although im an artist i run social media for a non-profit railway that supports hospices and charities at events. The exact same thing is happening in the railfan niche. The vast majority of followers on IG and Tiktok are liking and following to step up their own accounts. Genuine interaction is limited
Regarding making money as a creative: I think artists feel compelled to create art that changes the world (or at least that leaves an impact on the viewer). The type of art that makes money tends to be the kind that DOESN'T change anyone but rather already aligns with the people that are willing to spend money on it. This is why so many of the most famous and well-regarded artists (i.e., Van Gogh) were impoverished and unable to financially sustain themselves by their art during their lifetime. Surviving as a full-time artist therefore requires being able to create two different kinds of art: the art that contemporary people are willing to spend money on immediately, and the art that makes the artist feel fulfilled in creating and hopes will be meaningful to someone else someday. The most valuable art is ahead of its time when created and therefore is at first considered worthless before being considered priceless at a later time.
I feel this. As someone that comes from the underground scenes that use to totally reject social media. Its even worse now, even more fake. All marketing and 10% of the art/music. Dont give it power. Cheers to all the creative people doing what they love regardless of algorithms 🖤🤘
Totally, everyone wants a piece of the pie but they don't always consider if it's for the right reasons. I could have picked some high-return niche to make my videos about, but I chose art because that's what really matters most to me!
I also feel that if your artstyle isn't romanticized you wont get the attention you deserve beacuse people are only focused on whats viral,... like everything having to be perfectly aesthetic or something😕
Thanks for talking about this-I've been trying to help people understand how psychologically damaging SM can be but the vast majority of people can't see it, won't see it, until they take a break themselves. I've been off facebook for 4 years. I stopped posting to my personal or business insta about 3.5 years ago. I barely hop on there to scroll/catch up. I even ignore my email for long periods of time because all of it causes anxiety and false deadlines, a feeling of missing out or needing to hurry that is not based in reality. I think about SM like this: Neither the human body, nor the human brain, has evolved to compare ourselves to so so so many people. We would have influenced a tribe of people in the village we lived in or been influenced by members of our town, village or tribe. But that would have been a few people to a hundred or so people, not thousands. We would never have expected to compare ourselves to people living outside our nearby neighborhoods, let alone thousands of miles away.

The number one issue I found out, is that sharing your work on Instagram will not only inspire others, but will also cause you to end up seeing someone who starts to copy your ideas and artworks 1:1 and all of a sudden they get exhibitions with copies of your work. This happened twice to me and I decided to quit social media altogether after that. I haven't made any new work ever since. It's just... tainted. I can't get myself to making anything for well over 16 months now. Social media has totally ruined my will to create and share. I hope it comes back one day, but it's really hard to pick up and start making again.
I hope that you will pick up your tools again, too. It's awful having something made with love used in such a way, but their actions can't take a single thing away from the beauty you create. As another artist, I wish you the best in regaining that inspiration and happiness again that drew you to art initially. ❤
I'm sorry to hear that your work got copied! That must have been really frustrating. I think to get back to creating you have to remember that you made art for yourself in the first place, not for anyone else. It's so easy to lose sight of that!
I basically agree with everything you say. I would just make the point that 1. not everyone has family and friends where they live and 2. not everyone lives in a big city where there is a lot happening locally, and the internet is what makes success possible. Now I will also add that I hate the internet. But as far as I can tell (and I'm an elder millenial so I could be wrong), social media is the reason that so many people are now finding themselves able to generate income via their art.
Good points! The points I made are definitely from my own point of view - living in a big city - but I know it's not the same for those in smaller towns. I do think that those less populated areas can be even better than big cities for building community, though. Some of the small towns I've been to have a closer community than any big city ever could. The idea of being able to generate income via art is definitely a plus with the rise of social media, but it also comes with a lot of downfalls. Being able to have success in that arena almost requires someone to be good at producing content and reaching a wide audience - a skill that is much harder than it looks. Some of the most amazing artists I know struggle month to month because being "seen" and "successful" on social media is VERY tough - there is so much competition for us.
@@erinisabellabeeI’m 50 and gen X, so I can very much see it from the side of someone the grew up without the internet and social media, but it still influenced me at an age where I found it easy enough to learn how to use it. It’s been a big positive in my life, but it’s definitely had its down side. One thing I can tell you for sure, “flow mode” can be easily disrupted even without social media. Especially with undiagnosed ADHD (something the internet made me realise I have!). Also, remember that once upon a time there was a fear that books would ruin humanity. It’s not really “unnatural” to have so much exposure, it’s just something that is new. My life grew hugely when the internet was formed, especially social media. I’ve made friends that I’ve had far, far longer than any I’ve made IRL, because I found people I felt more in common with. It has helped me be more creative, it did allow me to have a creative career for around 10 years, which I ended for some of the reasons you mentioned, pressure to create stuff people wanted to buy was a big one, but that would have happened without the internet. If you want to make a living, for the vast majority of us there’s always going to be a need to make what people want to see or you just can’t live and again, that’s nothing new and will happen without the internet. I do agree with a lot of your points, obviously especially around getting away from the distraction (just don’t assume if the internet wasn’t around “flow mode” would automatically be easy). However, the internet has made being creative much, much easier for everyone in many respects. Even though it has its downsides. (I know you’re not saying otherwise, I just wanted to give an insight from someone older).
Absolutely! It's hard to find the balance. I feel that this platform (TH-cam) at least helps with that. I don't find myself enjoying the shorts scroll as much as I do the Instagram scroll, so I don't get sucked in on this platform - I choose more carefully what I consume here.
One last thought about advertising: I used to work in sales/marketing, and I've realized that advertising is a never-ending and ever-changing competition for attention. I think the most effective advertising is whatever gets the message in front on the target audience in the most unusual and memorable way possible. The biggest benefit of posting on social media is that it can be done without spending any money. However, it's hard to get anywhere by only posting one's stuff on social media. I think the best advertising/marketing nowadays comes from interest groups. Galleries, clubs, zines, fan websites. The places where people to go to share with one another their common interests. So, as an example, if someone is passionately interested in painting landscapes in the style of Bob Ross, they can ask themselves, "Who else is passionate about painting these types of paintings? Who is passionate about looking at these types of paintings? Where do these people mingle with one another and talk about the paintings they love?" Sometimes the answer might be, "I'm going to create a website / MeetUp / Instagram / Facebook Group dedicated to this style of art where these artists and their greatest fans can all mingle with one another." Then everyone is better off together.

Back in the day, I dunno, over 15 years ago there was a concept of "selling out". Basically, artists doing their art purely to make companies money. There is a 2 issue comic called "I feel sick" which dealt with this. "Selling out" eventually became what all artists aspire to do since the 2010s. I think there is a direct connection to what you are talking about.
Totally, I didn’t directly address the concept of selling out because to a certain extent people do have to make a living - but it really is a thing. I can see how it can be tempting but I also can’t stand to make art that doesn’t make me feel something.

People have to make a living. 💰💰💰 I think what was lost was the push back against the strangle hold corporations have over art (music, film, art gallery’s, etc.) I remember going to shows where bands played, people displayed their art, sold indie comics, sold crafts, gave out zines, etc. Do those events still exist? I remember just a heathy pushback/rebellious attitude against working for some soulless company. From what I understand nowadays many creatives feel that if their work isn’t recognized by the mainstream it’s not worth doing/hold no value. I guess because there is no more local art scene to be apart of. (I’m sure there are some healthy local scenes but not as much as there used to be). Does that make sense?
@@pb2325 Of course! I'm totally here for the conversation. The scene does still exist - the struggle is getting people to come out and appreciate it. There are still musicians and artists pushing for these types of events and hosting them, but it's SO HARD to get people to show up. It really depends on where you live - I'm in Los Angeles where the art scene is still thriving, but the. music scene struggles unless it's what's "popular" right now.
@@erinisabellabee Sorry for the late reply! I grew up in/on NY/Long Island and the scene was great. It’s still going but it’s mostly middle aged people. Not sure what the younger scene is up to. I’ve been in Japan for a number of years and the underground art scene seems to be doing ok but not as massive as it was 15 years ago. I’m really curious about the local scene in LA. Are there still indie comics and publishers? Has everything moved online?

I dived into the virtual world 4 months ago in attempts to share my art. It's been a very experimental journey, since I have also left my corporate job to give my creative side a boost in terms of realization. As I began trying to forge some sort of social media persona, sometimes it's proven to be devastating. I might get overwhelmed by senses of inner chaos, confusion, frustration, etc. The virtual world being a stimulating vortex, it sucks in creative people and sucks out energy. Currently trying to balance it all out and make the digital world work for me instead of being a slave to it. Meditation and physical activity has proven to be absolutely key so far. Very relatable message, Erin! Thank you for sharing and giving another needed heads up.

This is spot on! I gave up social media close to 2 years ago. Everything you say is exactly what I tell people when they ask me why. I recently created a youtube channel showing my crafts. In hopes people can see how exciting life can be, and to release their creativity.

I briefly tried to use Facebook in 2008, but thought it was stupid and quit. I tried Facebook again, as well as Twitter, in 2014, thought they were stupid, and quit. I'm shy as hell and don't like my real name being out there, so I'm probably not the target demographic for social media.

I’ve been off socials for about four years now and it is so liberating to get away from. Been using TH-cam the past few months to upload my art and have been tempted to create social media accounts like instagram so i can share my creations elsewhere, but i feel like my art has gotten more unique and better represents me since i stopped seeking validation from strangers on the internet
Social media is great in moderation - it can be a tool for connecting with other artists, a great source of inspiration, and a way to share your work with people all over the world. But the key word here is moderation. All the points you bring up are valid cons of social media.
It ruined everything. People think I’m being a cranky old Gen Xer but it’s just a fact. Don’t torture yourself by measuring yourself against the 20th century metrics of success. The landscape is too different now.
It really did, I totally agree. People on the outside looking in see it as more opportunity to get your work out there, but those of us behind the glass know how tough it really has gotten.
I’m a cranky old gen Xer too. It didn’t ruin everything. It isn’t a fact. It changed things, but there was a time when people thought people reading books would be the ruin of humanity. Books changed things, magazines changed thing, TV changed things, movies changed things. Things change and some people don’t like it.
@@erinisabellabeeit’s always been tough and that side of it used to be even tougher because there was often nowhere to show off your work. It’s tough now, but there it means there is a venue for everyone and a slim chance, rather than pretty much no chance for the vast majority. As I said in another comment to you, there’s definitely downsides, but some have always been there in a different form.
gave up, long ago, now I just write music, and post it on my facebook, once in a while, few find it, so be it. Left twitter earlier this year because it was a deadend, and no matter how much I posted anything, I got nothing back, talk about a black hole.
I've been using a live streaming platform as an accountability tool, just to keep me from falling asleep after work. Recently I resolved to stop watching all the career streamer's content on that platform because it was coloring how I viewed the success or failure of my own streams, even though our goals in live streaming were very different. Comparison is the thief of joy.
It truly is - it's hard to find the balance from seeking inspiration from others and just comparing ourselves to them. I think if it was negatively impacting you it's a great idea to stop watching them!

It's over-saturated with unnecessary micro-creative say-nothing tid-bits stretched out in too many words and efx, like: play guitar through bass amp, record in vcr cassette, make DIY dub system, make a fretted violin etc so on and so on. It's all nice, but it's a complete full on horseporse - nothing of that matters, and the videos there even take away a private moment of discovery, because some nerd in Arkhangelsk has already done it and posted it.
I didn't say in my video that I don't want to use social media - if you watch it, I talk a lot about finding balance. I am on TH-cam because this platform specifically heavily rewards it's creators for their efforts and I find the algorithm to be much more accurate in connecting the right people with one another.
We aren't dumb, we're just finally talking about it. TH-cam stands out and is more worthwhile because we can actually earn income from our content, and we aren't confined to the limitations that Instagram has.
Time is so precious and every minute we spend unintentionally scrolling is a minute you are not intentionally creating. I find the balance difficult as well. I find my creativity and social media use can have an inverse relationship and I try to reduce it for that reason. You had some great points Erin, thanks for sharing!
Yep! I definitely needed this video, man. I've been a social media/smartphone addicted writer for over 13 years now; I turn 26 next week. It's terrifying to think of how much time I've lost to doom scrolling and isolating myself from a real social life. If there's one new year's resolution I actually want to stick to, it's plucking this damn thorn from my side 🤣 no more validation seeking thru screens! A true artist cannot be a manipulator. Meta (and most other social media platforms) treats people like objects by trying to retain our attention as much as possible. We are the “product”, the object. You see this mechanism everywhere, and sadly, if we’re unconscious, we do it to be part of it. Here the real problem is not Instagram, but our own insecurities that allow the algorithm to control our self-worth. Any social media is good for connection, as long as we treat people as humans and not objects just to be accepted in a toxic society. My guess for us artist is that we know deep inside we’re betraying ourselves when we become part of the problem. We, artist, philosophers, musicians have the responsibility, as Van Gogh puts it, to show what a real human has in his her heart: “What am I in the eyes of most people - a nonentity, an eccentric or an unpleasant person - somebody who has no position in society and never will have, in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then - even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart.”
I agree that we have the responsibility to show what a real human has in their heart - that's totally the essence of what art should be about! Where things get lost is when our self-worth gets mixed up in how much engagement we're getting on social media - it's totally backwards. We should be creating the art that we want to create, not what we think people want to see.
I have already been minimizing my social media usage since the pandemic started. Back in 2020, I had an instagram account with 7k followers, and I wanted to make a career out of it. However, spending time at home made me realize I felt like crap every time I was on social media. I have dealt with body dismorphia since I was very young, and it was only getting worse. I decided I was going to start posting on close friends only - so less people interacted. Then, I proceeded to abandon that account and handpick who was gonna be on my new one, and there I have 95 followers and I turned it into a memoir of offline activities I decided to engage with (such as art, martial arts, trips, important events), in a more organic way. I don't regret anything. I now spend on average 22min a day on the app, browsing for outfit inspo, art events and nice pics from my closest friends. It has improved my overall mental health in ways I can't begin to describe.
That's amazing! It sounds like you seriously did the right thing for yourself. I love that backing off from social media helped you, and that you're able to reconnect with your close friends and your real world life. It sounds like you are using it the way we all used it when it first came out, before it became this big giant flashing light promising fame and fortune. Stoked for you!

I love the sound of this It sounds peaceful. I only have one Instagram account for my dog lol, but I use it to find people who struggle with similar things. I post the things we do and just things I’ve learned. If people find peace in my account I’m happy, if I get no likes on a post I’m happy.
I used to want a lot of followers until I realized that I absolutely do not want that anymore. I only go on Instagram to post occasionally, because I like having all of my artwork in one place. I don’t care about the interaction anymore, and it is very liberating
My social media following was probably at its peak several years ago when I was doing the same kind of art, and it was fun getting follows and likes but at the same time, I felt like I wasn't really growing artistically. I'm much more experimental with my artwork now and my stuff doesn't look consistent from post to post, so the algorithm sorta shoves me back into oblivion lol.. BUT I have grown so much more creatively because of it. I've even managed to get a job in the game industry earlier this year.. so while my social media presence suffered, I was still able to grow in ways that I wanted to and get opportunities that I didn't expect. Social media isn't the be-all-end-all of artistic growth, and it saddens me that so many young/inexperienced artists tie it to their sense of self worth. Don't be afraid to create for YOURSELF.
I slowed way down on Social. I can’t believe it took so long but I know it’s truly toxic. I’m a well seasoned hairdresser that became an educator with a well known hair color company. I was prompted to post a lot of content for them. At times in a competitive way. All the comparing my work to others and counting likes and views was exhausting my emotional headspace. I was feeling the sickness. Now I limit my time just long enough to post because I realize there’s an addictive aspect to Instagram. It’s dispicable on their part and unfortunate that it’s how the machine works now. Thanks for sharing!!❤
I can relate to this so much! I was a hairdresser for 5 years before switching out of the field. It wasn’t for me because of how exhausted I was by talking to people ALL DAY, but it also was so tough how competitive it can be and how much of a popularity contest it is. Good for you for putting yourself first, it’s not easy to do especially in an industry like that!
For me personally, I was around when social media wasn't a thing growing up at all. And I have watched it strip peoples individuality from them and turn them into this collective thinker and totally change them and not in a good way. I have seen this happen to so many people and it is disheartening for me. I don't use a cell phone that I can get online with. Only for text and call for this reason. I have a laptop at home and I keep it that way so I don't have this available to me at all times and I miss out on LIFE because I am too busy looking at a screen. I notice alot of college campuses today, where free thought and individuality used to be something to strive for has died. And now it's everyone doing and saying the same thing and if you don't your pretty much cut out of "society". It's beyond weird and sad. And society is dying for someone to be an individual and put something out for the world, especially if it is positive. I hate that this thing that has brought us all together has stripped many and made them into these zombie like people who all parrot the same thing trying to "go viral" all the time. It's having serious negative effects on society.
I totally agree! Social media was just getting started when I was a young teen. It’s definitely been disheartening to watch what it has done to society.
Thank you, Erin. I actually quit social media, and I could not be happier. I am an artist too, but I don't believe I am going to find an audience sitting in front of a screen. I am going to go out and organically develop my career as an artist and trust that my authentic expression will attract people to my work.
For years, at family holiday get togethers, mainly thanksgiving and christmas, sometimes easter, my nephews and nieces, would constantly have their attention on their phones, even though i only saw them a few times during the year, and i found it insulting and irritating, and now they suddenly want to actually talk at the events, and i find it difficult responding now, which is on me, but social media has not been good for society, for family, friends, loved ones.
I'm a career artist and I no longer have any social media,it just wasn't good for my health. I do all my networking in my local art community. Get to know your local gallery people, attend events, volunteer at art spaces etc. Thank you- I'm so glad other artists are starting to talk about this.
I get what you are saying, but if you want people to engage with your post, you also need to spend sometime engaging with fellow artists. Isn't it a bit selfish to expect others to spend time on your account if you do everything you can to stay off the app?
I do engage with other artists, and I don’t expect anything that I’m not also putting out in to the world. I’m just choosing to limit the amount of time I spend doing so. I’m well aware that I’ll get what I put in to it - I put things up on Instagram to have somewhere for people to find my art when they go looking for it because that’s the way a lot of people look in this someone’s “legitimacy” these days.
It could be a bit of a vent, but I made a point to share what I’m doing to change my relationship with social media along with suggestions for those looking for the same change.
i agree for sure, but when you have no friends or family (plus allergy to pets), it becomes really hard to extricate oneself from being excessively online.
Awesome video. Your analysis is on point. I also like that you’re so calm and quite objective. My fear as someone who thinks about going into art professionally is this huge plagiarism discussion in the social media arts community. I remember, in fashion university, I made a design. I didn’t look left or right. I just watched a report about s!xual crime towards women. So I took this as my inspiration topic. When I presented it, my teacher said: „oh! Looks a lot like Alexander McQueen!“ I knew a lot of his works, but didn’t know the one where he had also addressed this topic. Later, I did a design and my teacher said: „looks like Elsa Schiaparelli.“ I didn’t know Schiaparelli back then. I never saw one of her designs until that day. It was very alike, but no copy. But still… I didn’t even know her. I am scared that this might happen in arts and I get a shit storm. Idk what I should do if this happens. How can you proof that you didn’t do it or at least that it’s a coincidence? Then you’re burned. I am thinking if I list all of my favorite artists there and write: „There can be similarities. They’re of course an inspiration.“ Maybe I overthink it, but well…
I think that if you aren’t plagiarizing someone else’s idea, you won’t be proven to have done so. No matter how “alike” your original idea may be, it won’t ever be identical to someone else’s. If it’s really that close to someone you admire without even meaning to do so, maybe that’s a sign you SHOULD stick with it because you have a gift! I don’t ever worry about people “thinking” I’m copying someone else, because I’m not and I would not.

I think it also helps if you are developing the idea in a collection then all the pieces are connected with this theme and make sense together as a unique whole, so one piece resembling another artist becomes just a sync or an inspiration@@lme4339
It is, but the algorithm seems to have a much better design that gets content in front of the right audience. TH-cam also rewards its creators monetarily, which for artists and creatives is how we can keep creating.
In the past two years I stopped using social media (except youtube), and I feel freer, more present and connected to myself and my art projects & life. I never had an art account though - just personal where i used to scroll art/design - ...., but I have been debating it, and a bit like you, thinking what form it will take online, so your analysis was very useful for me. I personally feel that social media has brought about so many copy cats and people taking other people's content and tweaking it slightly and calling it "their own creation." ciao! I really enjoyed the video, I'm watching several on this topic these days. since ig started changing (few years ago) I've had even more difficulty keeping up with my mental health. I was also convinced that I had to become a content creator but the reality is that I HATE Instagram and have no interest in sharing my whole life there… I will try to use the app only to share new works to keep the profile as a portfolio. although every time I publish, seeing that there is no engagement makes me sad and I would prefer not to have to use it anymore. I'm torn :/
I totally get that! To me, you can look at that two ways: - there is little engagement because the platform rewards consistency by showing your posts to more people, so the lack of engagement is not at all a reflection of your work! - if that still really bums you out, I say just don’t use it! There are soooo many artists that don’t use social media and still find success in galleries and art fairs. Do what maintains your mental health, otherwise your creativity will surely suffer! I will say this though - if you enjoy consuming TH-cam content, you could always try your hand at creating on here. I find that this platform more than any others rewards authenticity - you can make content that is true to you and people will find it. It doesn’t even have to be high quality. I uninstalled instagram and the quality of my creative writing/general wellbeing are beginning to reap the benefits. My focus and attention span are still abominable though because I can spend swathes of free time on youtube/blogs, etc. I remembered I used to be able to watch a film or read like half a book without feeling fidgety at all, in fact I'd be completely engrossed - now 7 minutes in and my hand is searching round for my phone. I am going to get back to older, simpler time lol and damn well appreciate it when I do! Not willing to give up youtube fully but I know that drastically reducing it is the next step towards liberation! Edit: I redownload instagram for like 20 minutes every week just to check DMs and that works fine, although its actually scary how easy it would be to get sucked back in and lose hours scrolling if I wasn't careful lol!

There are many things that I stop reading, or watching if I don't like it. If I'm not learning anything I shut things off. I value my time. I use my time wisely.😊
Just have zero expectations with social media. You can post amazing content and still get no views or likes. I certainly wouldn't make it part of my full time job with the intention of making success on social media. Only post for fun and if it takes off, then well... Would be silly not to exploit it.
I think I'll be focusing on my personal journey with art for awhile and not so much with social media. I'm sorry to hear about your own struggles and I can tell you that I feel what you're feeling, from the bottom of my inkwell.

I've started limiting my access to social media whilst sitting on the toilet. ... though, I fell asleep on the toilet once, so maybe there's a fallacy in that idea.
I made a decent amount of sales through social media. But each time I sold it to people I had build a connection with upfront. Establishing a network and then use it to to make money is one way to use socials but it seems to be getting harder and harder these days.
It’s great that you’ve made sales! It really does still take effort - that’s the biggest thing. Sometimes you can put forth all the effort in the world and not get those results. I’m totally still figuring out the establishing a network part.

As a full-time artist, and from current and past experiences, I've found that 99% of my business comes from my Art studio/school's physical location or from my own website. Social media never seemed to help in any way, especially not for the time spent in there.
Sure, you get lots of likes and wows and hearts. Sometimes, people may visit your website or whatever... but compared to the amount of paying customers you get from an actual art studio, exhibitions and galleries... social media is truly ridiculous.

As you said its become so saturated and in a way that cheapens it too, like fast fashion. Its hard to think deeply about a specific work when you're scrolling to the next thing immediately. Not like in a gallery. And also you can easily miss texture, colours, size, not like in a gallery as well. Hot take: art accounts on social media are mostly visited by other artist who are looking to grow their own art account on social media. Most normies aren't going to social media to be part of the art community (have discussions, analyze, recommend, buy art). Most normies go to social media to distract themselves.

Not just Art Accounts, although im an artist i run social media for a non-profit railway that supports hospices and charities at events.
The exact same thing is happening in the railfan niche. The vast majority of followers on IG and Tiktok are liking and following to step up their own accounts. Genuine interaction is limited

Regarding making money as a creative:
I think artists feel compelled to create art that changes the world (or at least that leaves an impact on the viewer).
The type of art that makes money tends to be the kind that DOESN'T change anyone but rather already aligns with the people that are willing to spend money on it.
This is why so many of the most famous and well-regarded artists (i.e., Van Gogh) were impoverished and unable to financially sustain themselves by their art during their lifetime.
Surviving as a full-time artist therefore requires being able to create two different kinds of art: the art that contemporary people are willing to spend money on immediately, and the art that makes the artist feel fulfilled in creating and hopes will be meaningful to someone else someday.
The most valuable art is ahead of its time when created and therefore is at first considered worthless before being considered priceless at a later time.
I feel this. As someone that comes from the underground scenes that use to totally reject social media. Its even worse now, even more fake. All marketing and 10% of the art/music. Dont give it power. Cheers to all the creative people doing what they love regardless of algorithms 🖤🤘
Totally, everyone wants a piece of the pie but they don't always consider if it's for the right reasons. I could have picked some high-return niche to make my videos about, but I chose art because that's what really matters most to me!

Thanks for talking about this-I've been trying to help people understand how psychologically damaging SM can be but the vast majority of people can't see it, won't see it, until they take a break themselves. I've been off facebook for 4 years. I stopped posting to my personal or business insta about 3.5 years ago. I barely hop on there to scroll/catch up. I even ignore my email for long periods of time because all of it causes anxiety and false deadlines, a feeling of missing out or needing to hurry that is not based in reality.
I think about SM like this: Neither the human body, nor the human brain, has evolved to compare ourselves to so so so many people. We would have influenced a tribe of people in the village we lived in or been influenced by members of our town, village or tribe. But that would have been a few people to a hundred or so people, not thousands. We would never have expected to compare ourselves to people living outside our nearby neighborhoods, let alone thousands of miles away.
Totally! It's definitely unnatural to have so much influence. In a way it can be a good thing, but too much of anything can be bad!

It really is! There are certainly those who find luck online, but in person is so much more impactful.
The number one issue I found out, is that sharing your work on Instagram will not only inspire others, but will also cause you to end up seeing someone who starts to copy your ideas and artworks 1:1 and all of a sudden they get exhibitions with copies of your work. This happened twice to me and I decided to quit social media altogether after that. I haven't made any new work ever since. It's just... tainted. I can't get myself to making anything for well over 16 months now. Social media has totally ruined my will to create and share. I hope it comes back one day, but it's really hard to pick up and start making again.
I hope that you will pick up your tools again, too. It's awful having something made with love used in such a way, but their actions can't take a single thing away from the beauty you create. As another artist, I wish you the best in regaining that inspiration and happiness again that drew you to art initially. ❤

I think to get back to creating you have to remember that you made art for yourself in the first place, not for anyone else. It's so easy to lose sight of that!
I basically agree with everything you say. I would just make the point that 1. not everyone has family and friends where they live and 2. not everyone lives in a big city where there is a lot happening locally, and the internet is what makes success possible. Now I will also add that I hate the internet. But as far as I can tell (and I'm an elder millenial so I could be wrong), social media is the reason that so many people are now finding themselves able to generate income via their art.
Good points! The points I made are definitely from my own point of view - living in a big city - but I know it's not the same for those in smaller towns. I do think that those less populated areas can be even better than big cities for building community, though. Some of the small towns I've been to have a closer community than any big city ever could.
The idea of being able to generate income via art is definitely a plus with the rise of social media, but it also comes with a lot of downfalls. Being able to have success in that arena almost requires someone to be good at producing content and reaching a wide audience - a skill that is much harder than it looks. Some of the most amazing artists I know struggle month to month because being "seen" and "successful" on social media is VERY tough - there is so much competition for us.
@@erinisabellabeeI’m 50 and gen X, so I can very much see it from the side of someone the grew up without the internet and social media, but it still influenced me at an age where I found it easy enough to learn how to use it. It’s been a big positive in my life, but it’s definitely had its down side. One thing I can tell you for sure, “flow mode” can be easily disrupted even without social media. Especially with undiagnosed ADHD (something the internet made me realise I have!). Also, remember that once upon a time there was a fear that books would ruin humanity. It’s not really “unnatural” to have so much exposure, it’s just something that is new.
My life grew hugely when the internet was formed, especially social media. I’ve made friends that I’ve had far, far longer than any I’ve made IRL, because I found people I felt more in common with. It has helped me be more creative, it did allow me to have a creative career for around 10 years, which I ended for some of the reasons you mentioned, pressure to create stuff people wanted to buy was a big one, but that would have happened without the internet. If you want to make a living, for the vast majority of us there’s always going to be a need to make what people want to see or you just can’t live and again, that’s nothing new and will happen without the internet.
I do agree with a lot of your points, obviously especially around getting away from the distraction (just don’t assume if the internet wasn’t around “flow mode” would automatically be easy). However, the internet has made being creative much, much easier for everyone in many respects. Even though it has its downsides. (I know you’re not saying otherwise, I just wanted to give an insight from someone older).
I love this! Social media can benefit artists, but it can also weaken their creative drive. Finding a balance is extremely crucial.
Absolutely! It's hard to find the balance. I feel that this platform (TH-cam) at least helps with that. I don't find myself enjoying the shorts scroll as much as I do the Instagram scroll, so I don't get sucked in on this platform - I choose more carefully what I consume here.
One last thought about advertising:
I used to work in sales/marketing, and I've realized that advertising is a never-ending and ever-changing competition for attention. I think the most effective advertising is whatever gets the message in front on the target audience in the most unusual and memorable way possible.
The biggest benefit of posting on social media is that it can be done without spending any money. However, it's hard to get anywhere by only posting one's stuff on social media.
I think the best advertising/marketing nowadays comes from interest groups. Galleries, clubs, zines, fan websites. The places where people to go to share with one another their common interests.
So, as an example, if someone is passionately interested in painting landscapes in the style of Bob Ross, they can ask themselves, "Who else is passionate about painting these types of paintings? Who is passionate about looking at these types of paintings? Where do these people mingle with one another and talk about the paintings they love?"
Sometimes the answer might be, "I'm going to create a website / MeetUp / Instagram / Facebook Group dedicated to this style of art where these artists and their greatest fans can all mingle with one another." Then everyone is better off together.

Back in the day, I dunno, over 15 years ago there was a concept of "selling out". Basically, artists doing their art purely to make companies money. There is a 2 issue comic called "I feel sick" which dealt with this. "Selling out" eventually became what all artists aspire to do since the 2010s. I think there is a direct connection to what you are talking about.
Totally, I didn’t directly address the concept of selling out because to a certain extent people do have to make a living - but it really is a thing. I can see how it can be tempting but I also can’t stand to make art that doesn’t make me feel something.

I think what was lost was the push back against the strangle hold corporations have over art (music, film, art gallery’s, etc.)
I remember going to shows where bands played, people displayed their art, sold indie comics, sold crafts, gave out zines, etc.
Do those events still exist? I remember just a heathy pushback/rebellious attitude against working for some soulless company.
From what I understand nowadays many creatives feel that if their work isn’t recognized by the mainstream it’s not worth doing/hold no value. I guess because there is no more local art scene to be apart of. (I’m sure there are some healthy local scenes but not as much as there used to be).

The scene does still exist - the struggle is getting people to come out and appreciate it. There are still musicians and artists pushing for these types of events and hosting them, but it's SO HARD to get people to show up.
It really depends on where you live - I'm in Los Angeles where the art scene is still thriving, but the. music scene struggles unless it's what's "popular" right now.

I dived into the virtual world 4 months ago in attempts to share my art. It's been a very experimental journey, since I have also left my corporate job to give my creative side a boost in terms of realization.
As I began trying to forge some sort of social media persona, sometimes it's proven to be devastating. I might get overwhelmed by senses of inner chaos, confusion, frustration, etc. The virtual world being a stimulating vortex, it sucks in creative people and sucks out energy.
Currently trying to balance it all out and make the digital world work for me instead of being a slave to it. Meditation and physical activity has proven to be absolutely key so far.

I’ve been off socials for about four years now and it is so liberating to get away from. Honestly, I think TH-cam is the best platform to be on! It has gotten me more reach than any other platform with the most GENUINE responses.
Social media is great in moderation - it can be a tool for connecting with other artists, a great source of inspiration, and a way to share your work with people all over the world. But the key word here is moderation. All the points you bring up are valid cons of social media.

Books changed things, magazines changed thing, TV changed things, movies changed things. Things change and some people don’t like it.

It’s tough now, but there it means there is a venue for everyone and a slim chance, rather than pretty much no chance for the vast majority. I've been using a live streaming platform as an accountability tool, just to keep me from falling asleep after work. Recently I resolved to stop watching all the career streamer's content on that platform because it was coloring how I viewed the success or failure of my own streams, even though our goals in live streaming were very different. Comparison is the thief of joy.
It truly is - it's hard to find the balance from seeking inspiration from others and just comparing ourselves to them. I think if it was negatively impacting you it's a great idea to stop watching them!

I didn't say in my video that I don't want to use social media - if you watch it, I talk a lot about finding balance. Time is so precious and every minute we spend unintentionally scrolling is a minute you are not intentionally creating. I find the balance difficult as well. I find my creativity and social media use can have an inverse relationship and I try to reduce it for that reason. You had some great points Erin, thanks for sharing!

This is so tough for writers! I feel you.
A true artist cannot be a manipulator. Meta (and most other social media platforms) treats people like objects by trying to retain our attention as much as possible. We are the “product”, the object. You see this mechanism everywhere, and sadly, if we’re unconscious, we do it to be part of it. Here the real problem is not Instagram, but our own insecurities that allow the algorithm to control our self-worth. Any social media is good for connection, as long as we treat people as humans and not objects just to be accepted in a toxic society.
My guess for us artist is that we know deep inside we’re betraying ourselves when we become part of the problem.
We, artist, philosophers, musicians have the responsibility, as Van Gogh puts it, to show what a real human has in his her heart:
“What am I in the eyes of most people - a nonentity, an eccentric or an unpleasant person - somebody who has no position in society and never will have, in short, the lowest of the low.
All right, then - even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart.”
beautifully written! Knowing and understanding your self-worth is very important.
I agree that we have the responsibility to show what a real human has in their heart - that's totally the essence of what art should be about!
Where things get lost is when our self-worth gets mixed up in how much engagement we're getting on social media - it's totally backwards. We should be creating the art that we want to create, not what we think people want to see.

I have already been minimizing my social media usage since the pandemic started. Back in 2020, I had an instagram account with 7k followers, and I wanted to make a career out of it. However, spending time at home made me realize I felt like crap every time I was on social media. I have dealt with body dismorphia since I was very young, and it was only getting worse. I decided I was going to start posting on close friends only - so less people interacted. Then, I proceeded to abandon that account and handpick who was gonna be on my new one, and there I have 95 followers and I turned it into a memoir of offline activities I decided to engage with (such as art, martial arts, trips, important events), in a more organic way. I don't regret anything. I now spend on average 22min a day on the app, browsing for outfit inspo, art events and nice pics from my closest friends. It has improved my overall mental health in ways I can't begin to describe.
That's amazing! It sounds like you seriously did the right thing for yourself. I love that backing off from social media helped you, and that you're able to reconnect with your close friends and your real world life. It sounds like you are using it the way we all used it when it first came out, before it became this big giant flashing light promising fame and fortune. Stoked for you!

I love the sound of this It sounds peaceful. I only have one Instagram account for my dog lol, but I use it to find people who struggle with similar things. I post the things we do and just things I’ve learned. If people find peace in my account I’m happy, if I get no likes on a post I’m happy.
I used to want a lot of followers until I realized that I absolutely do not want that anymore. I only go on Instagram to post occasionally, because I like having all of my artwork in one place. I don’t care about the interaction anymore, and it is very liberating
My social media following was probably at its peak several years ago when I was doing the same kind of art, and it was fun getting follows and likes but at the same time, I felt like I wasn't really growing artistically. I'm much more experimental with my artwork now and my stuff doesn't look consistent from post to post, so the algorithm sorta shoves me back into oblivion lol.. BUT I have grown so much more creatively because of it. I've even managed to get a job in the game industry earlier this year.. so while my social media presence suffered, I was still able to grow in ways that I wanted to and get opportunities that I didn't expect. Social media isn't the be-all-end-all of artistic growth, and it saddens me that so many young/inexperienced artists tie it to their sense of self worth. Don't be afraid to create for YOURSELF.

I slowed way down on Social. I can’t believe it took so long but I know it’s truly toxic. I’m a well seasoned hairdresser that became an educator with a well known hair color company. I was prompted to post a lot of content for them. At times in a competitive way. All the comparing my work to others and counting likes and views was exhausting my emotional headspace. I was feeling the sickness. Now I limit my time just long enough to post because I realize there’s an addictive aspect to Instagram. It’s dispicable on their part and unfortunate that it’s how the machine works now. Thanks for sharing!!❤
I can relate to this so much! I was a hairdresser for 5 years before switching out of the field. It wasn’t for me because of how exhausted I was by talking to people ALL DAY, but it also was so tough how competitive it can be and how much of a popularity contest it is.
Good for you for putting yourself first, it’s not easy to do especially in an industry like that!
For me personally, I was around when social media wasn't a thing growing up at all. And I have watched it strip peoples individuality from them and turn them into this collective thinker and totally change them and not in a good way. I have seen this happen to so many people and it is disheartening for me. I don't use a cell phone that I can get online with. Only for text and call for this reason. I have a laptop at home and I keep it that way so I don't have this available to me at all times and I miss out on LIFE because I am too busy looking at a screen. I notice alot of college campuses today, where free thought and individuality used to be something to strive for has died. And now it's everyone doing and saying the same thing and if you don't your pretty much cut out of "society". It's beyond weird and sad. And society is dying for someone to be an individual and put something out for the world, especially if it is positive. I hate that this thing that has brought us all together has stripped many and made them into these zombie like people who all parrot the same thing trying to "go viral" all the time. It's having serious negative effects on society.
I totally agree! Social media was just getting started when I was a young teen. It’s definitely been disheartening to watch what it has done to society.
Thank you, Erin. I actually quit social media, and I could not be happier. I am an artist too, but I don't believe I am going to find an audience sitting in front of a screen. I am going to go out and organically develop my career as an artist and trust that my authentic expression will attract people to my work.

For years, at family holiday get togethers, mainly thanksgiving and christmas, sometimes easter, my nephews and nieces, would constantly have their attention on their phones, even though i only saw them a few times during the year, and i found it insulting and irritating, and now they suddenly want to actually talk at the events, and i find it difficult responding now, which is on me, but social media has not been good for society, for family, friends, loved ones.
I totally agree - it has really hurt the way we interact with each other.
I'm a career artist and I no longer have any social media,it just wasn't good for my health. I do all my networking in my local art community. Get to know your local gallery people, attend events, volunteer at art spaces etc. Thank you- I'm so glad other artists are starting to talk about this.

I get what you are saying, but if you want people to engage with your post, you also need to spend sometime engaging with fellow artists. Isn't it a bit selfish to expect others to spend time on your account if you do everything you can to stay off the app?
To me this is like a ranting, venting video.
I do engage with other artists, and I don’t expect anything that I’m not also putting out in to the world. I’m just choosing to limit the amount of time I spend doing so. I’m well aware that I’ll get what I put in to it - I put things up on Instagram to have somewhere for people to find my art when they go looking for it because that’s the way a lot of people look in this someone’s “legitimacy” these days.
It could be a bit of a vent, but I made a point to share what I’m doing to change my relationship with social media along with suggestions for those looking for the same change.
i minimize my social media by not using it on my phone. if its on the computer, I don't need an app. desktop usually works better anyway

i agree for sure, but when you have no friends or family (plus allergy to pets), it becomes really hard to extricate oneself from being excessively online.

My fear as someone who thinks about going into art professionally is this huge plagiarism discussion in the social media arts community. I remember, in fashion university, I made a design. I didn’t look left or right. I just watched a report about s!xual crime towards women. So I took this as my inspiration topic. When I presented it, my teacher said: „oh! Looks a lot like Alexander McQueen!“ I knew a lot of his works, but didn’t know the one where he had also addressed this topic. Later, I did a design and my teacher said: „looks like Elsa Schiaparelli.“ I didn’t know Schiaparelli back then. I never saw one of her designs until that day. It was very alike, but no copy. But still… I didn’t even know her. I am scared that this might happen in arts and I get a shit storm. Idk what I should do if this happens. How can you proof that you didn’t do it or at least that it’s a coincidence? Then you’re burned. I am thinking if I list all of my favorite artists there and write: „There can be similarities. They’re of course an inspiration.“
Maybe I overthink it, but well…
I think that if you aren’t plagiarizing someone else’s idea, you won’t be proven to have done so. No matter how “alike” your original idea may be, it won’t ever be identical to someone else’s. If it’s really that close to someone you admire without even meaning to do so, maybe that’s a sign you SHOULD stick with it because you have a gift!
I don’t ever worry about people “thinking” I’m copying someone else, because I’m not and I would not.
@@erinisabellabee thank you. 🥹 I am just really a bit scared because I have read sometimes harsh comments under other people’s works and I was often thinking it might look similar to the works the commenters were referring to but is not the same. It makes me anxious. 😥 but well… in the end, I will only know if I try. 🤔 but since I have a few challenges before I can start, I have enough time to gather courage. 😄
I think it also helps if you are developing the idea in a collection then all the pieces are connected with this theme and make sense together as a unique whole, so one piece resembling another artist becomes just a sync or an inspiration@@lme4339

It is, but the algorithm seems to have a much better design that gets content in front of the right audience. TH-cam also rewards its creators monetarily, which for artists and creatives is how we can keep creating.
So often, people associate the 'things' they mimic, or purchase, with, 'who they are'.
I like to think we are much more than the things we have!

This is a pretty big question, but to me an artist is anyone who creates what they think is art.
In the past two years I stopped using social media (except youtube), and I feel freer, more present and connected to myself and my art projects & life. I never had an art account though - just personal where i used to scroll art/design - ...., but I have been debating it, and a bit like you, thinking what form it will take online, so your analysis was very useful for me. It confirmed some of my beliefs and gave me some new ideas. Your voice is hypnotic to listen to, you are so calm and well spoken. Thanks for the video.

I personally feel that social media has brought about so many copy cats and people taking other people's content and tweaking it slightly and calling it "their own creation." Now add AI, which has absolutely ruined all of my motivation to make music. I have no drive. It's gone. Art/Music is dead people. The amount of music and art being created by AI will never allow humans to crack above the surface of the water. It's a when, not an if...
I agree that it's frustrating that AI is on the scene, but I genuinely don't believe it devalues us as human artists at all. I know it seems like a giant dump has been taken on the creative community, but it's a FAKE dump.

since ig started changing (few years ago) I've had even more difficulty keeping up with my mental health. I was also convinced that I had to become a content creator but the reality is that I HATE Instagram and have no interest in sharing my whole life there…
I will try to use the app only to share new works to keep the profile as a portfolio. although every time I publish, seeing that there is no engagement makes me sad and I would prefer not to have to use it anymore. I'm torn :/
I totally get that! To me, you can look at that two ways:
- there is little engagement because the platform rewards consistency by showing your posts to more people, so the lack of engagement is not at all a reflection of your work!
- if that still really bums you out, I say just don’t use it! There are soooo many artists that don’t use social media and still find success in galleries and art fairs.
Do what maintains your mental health, otherwise your creativity will surely suffer!
I will say this though - if you enjoy consuming TH-cam content, you could always try your hand at creating on here. I find that this platform more than any others rewards authenticity - you can make content that is true to you and people will find it. It doesn’t even have to be high quality.

I have this additional predicament though which has plagued me for the longest fucking time, which is: if you can't even make a living off of your work (where I'm at), and nobody knows or cares about what you do, is it even worth posting your work on the interwebz? I just want someone out there to see my shit and be like, "I really understand that emotion/thought". That's it. That IS it. But why post anything if nothing comes of it? I don't know, maybe I'm just dumb/petty/poopy.

I think it's still worth posting! Think about all of the people who post photos and videos of their daily lives with no expectation of anything in return - the good old days of social media.

I uninstalled instagram and the quality of my creative writing/general wellbeing are beginning to reap the benefits. My focus and attention span are still abominable though because I can spend swathes of free time on youtube/blogs, etc. I remembered I used to be able to watch a film or read like half a book without feeling fidgety at all, in fact I'd be completely engrossed - now 7 minutes in and my hand is searching round for my phone. I am going to get back to older, simpler time lol and damn well appreciate it when I do! Not willing to give up youtube fully but I know that drastically reducing it is the next step towards liberation! Edit: I redownload instagram for like 20 minutes every week just to check DMs and that works fine, although its actually scary how easy it would be to get sucked back in and lose hours scrolling if I wasn't careful lol!
Isn't it wild?! I've found myself opening the app when I don't even mean to! It definitely takes a CONSCIOUS effort to make these changes.

Just have zero expectations with social media. You can post amazing content and still get no views or likes. I certainly wouldn't make it part of my full time job with the intention of making success on social media. Only post for fun and if it takes off, then well... Would be silly not to exploit it.

I made a decent amount of sales through social media. But each time I sold it to people I had build a connection with upfront. Establishing a network and then use it to to make money is one way to use socials but it seems to be getting harder and harder these days.
It’s great that you’ve made sales! It really does still take effort - that’s the biggest thing. Sometimes you can put forth all the effort in the world and not get those results. I’m totally still figuring out the establishing a network part.
@@erinisabellabee It takes a lot of time. If you manage to get your work shared by other artists who already have a big audience it can go faster. But at the beginning it's very slow and have to give more than you get out of it.
