    That burlap bag is a nice touch for hiding whatever brand of coffee that was. Plus, it really fits in with the cabin's overall style & feel much better. I also like how you're showing how to maintain and clean the pieces of the stove. It's not just an idealized life; there's a lot of work, a lot of things people don't even think about in our modern, convenience-saturated lives. I like how you willingly (at least on camera, lol) do these things.

    So wise to do a maintenance of the wood stove! Last winter, I was having uncharacteristic, continual, asthma attacks - my DH finally figured out that the glue holding the stove back & sides had completely worn out - not only was it a smoke hazard, but a fire hazard too!

    I had a thought; if in the depths of winter, the cabin has problems getting too cold late at night/early in the morning, consider investing in some soapstone "bricks" or blocks. put them under the stove on the cement to absorb radiated heat while cooking, put them on top of the stove when you're done cooking, and they'll soak in the heat and slowly release it all night. Iron heats up far faster than soapstone, but it also cools off way faster. Soapstone doesn't get as hot as iron, but it stays hot for way longer. And if you have a problem with dry air in the winter, get a soapstone kettle to pour water into; if the water runs dry because you forgot to refill it, the dry heat won't damage the soapstone pot, unlike any other material; it'll just radiate that heat into the cabin for a long while after.

    • @MySelfReliance
      @MySelfReliance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like that idea. A soapstone fireplace has been on my wish list as long as I can remember

    • @ladyofthemasque
      @ladyofthemasque 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's on mine, too, lol...though I live in the Seattle area, so we don't get below freezing for months on end. It does get damp, though, and heat drives moisture before it, so a good radiant heat would make our damp winters feel so much better indoors. I baked a pizza in the oven earlier, it was cold so after turning off the oven I left the door open, and the radiating heat felt so good... Alas, every new house around here has a gas fireplace, if it has a fireplace, and that just doesn't make sense. Wood is renewable and carbon neutral (in the long term), and cheaper overall, so long as you have the storage space for a few cords, plus it's a backup stove when the power goes out.
      I do have an outdoor brazier, and a cinderblock rocket stove... I should get some soapstone blocks for heating up and putting on trivets around the house when the power goes out for more than a few hours.

    It's 5am here in Phoenix, AZ and I too am making coffee. You're video's are so calming. I've been watching for a few months now. I watched you build your cabin and kitchen from start to finish. I love all the details from showing us how you make a cup of coffee and zooming in on the cup to the big pappa chair you made, the sounds of your work such as hammering, sanding and talking to your precious dog. Your endearing comments and acknowledgement of your wife are a testament to your loyalty and love for her. I'm just an almost 60 woman here watching to get ideas for my 28 year old son's homesteaad an hour from Phoenix and as a photographer and lover of the outdoors ( I do a lot of solo backpacking trips), I look forward to your videos and the beautiful videography. Deanna, I am from Phoenix but now live in northern PA. Although I love Az I now live in the country and it's very similar to what you are seeing in the videos. You would not believe the quiet or your eyes the first time you look outside and see a bear on the deck or a rafter of turkeys strolling past the window. My response is always..."now that's not something you see often in Phoenix." Don't get me started on the rain, ponds and water in the creeks and rivers! Now if only there was a Filiberto's Mexican Food or Carolina's within 100 miles I would be in paradise.

    Hey Shawn, the filter in the moka coffee machine (we call it moka in Italy, don't know how you refer to it in Canada) must be completely filled up by coffee powder. No half-way possible with such system! The moka only runs with full load, fixed amounts of coffee in the filter and of water in the bottom reservoir (water must reach just under the pressure valve). The reason is that you need the coffee to be compact causing pressure build up when water starts to boil. That pressure is needed in order to extract the flavors from the coffee. Also, make sure to use the right grain size for the grinded coffee. It must be much finer for the moka than for normal gravity-fed american filter coffee!

    • @lucianatrambaglio4881
      @lucianatrambaglio4881 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am Italian and drink only decaffein coffee, just like Shawn makes it. I do not fill up the filter with ground powder coffee and it is as good flavored as ever. Usual Italian coffee it's too strong for my taste and too small the one from the "bar" !

Then, wipe clean with a paper towel and throw the paper back into the stove to burn. I do this once a week or so, and it only takes a minute at the most. Keeps the glass super clean.

    That is one well loved wood stove. I remember our family heated our home with one. We were more than toasty in the winter, as long as we kept it stoked.

    Great job with replacing the rope seals for your indoor wood stove ! Looks like a lot work to take it apart and clean off all of the buildup. Your outdoor oven looks like it is still drying out and looks good ! Thanks for the video !

    Hi again! What a beautiful way to start your day Shawn! You accomplished so much over the spring/summer months and I know you'll continue through the fall. But I do hope when the snows and cold comes you'll be able to kick back a bit get cozy in the cabin and really appreciate and admire what you created from nothing. Special and amazing!! Thx as always for sharing so many great moments along the way Shawn...

    I missed the parts where you cook your meals!! I really like that and it makes me hungry every time you share it. Looking forward to enjoy your content when it finally starts to get cold here in germany. We don't have a wooden stove or any other "trivial" tech in our house to get it comfy. Therefore I'll enjoy the sound of your stove and the calm of your environment. Your lifestyle reminded me to get outside more often and I am glad that my little son (6 yo) enjoys it too when we walk through the woods. He is Iistening anxiously when I tell him what my granddad told me many years ago. I really appreciate it to spend time outside... the smell of the woods is balm for the soul and it is actually changing my mind. I started to live more conscious (if that is the right word), don't eat meat at least one day a week, reduced the amount of alcohol I used to drink, tried to waive sweets and the excessive use of electric (entertainment) devices and so on. I hope you'll read this and realize how valuable (or actually mindchanging!) your videos are for some people. Please continue your great work and live the dream many people are afraid to live! If I ever get the chance to travel to Canada I would "spend a leg" to have a beer and a great conversation with you at the cabin! Expect more of my (horribly written) comments in the next videos

    Your videos always remind me of my childhood... Sitting outside in the fall, late at night, only the campfire burning... Nobody says anything, just stares into the fire, and listens to the wood cracking and burning....

    Sir all your videos are real great and they all are very educational and you are very good at showing use your trade skill. I have two woods stoves in my house and I put a lot of rock's and iron steel from various railroads hardware and I notice that in the morning the room's are warmer then when the top of the stove was empty. So I hope with your new beautiful back stone wall and if your were keeping that big stone able to see the difference like I'm seeing here in my house basement. Sir Best regards and keep up the good work and thank you kindly for the great patience toward the making of these greats videos !

    Shawn, really enjoy watching not only the building aspect but also the maintenance. Videos like these show that life isn’t about relaxation, but what is required for the reward of relaxation. I’m also wondering how you carve out time to, not only maintain, get the winter wood supply.

      You think that cabin would survive one of your winters? Lol

    • @juhonieminen4219
      @juhonieminen4219 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a wilderness-happy finn I can say that it is getting there. Lots of good laybor in these videos, and good results. If I ever spot any mistakes, mostly I can find the debate about those errors in the comments, and many of them have been answered and cleared out in the later videos.
      But if you really wan't to live in such a place over the winter, you need a sauna and a better way to heat water to A) bath, and B) to wash clothes. Sauna with a proper old time cauldron will do it. But it will waste firewood, because of the lack of users. It would take a large family or a small willage to make it energy-efficient.
      I never go to the cabin between december and february, because of that reason. I wan't to save resources.

    I have watched many videos of these because I love nature, everything I see is beautiful, but of all those videos, the ones I like the most are yours because you almost do everything manually and for me it is what makes it more interesting, they are very good to see and instructive: each one of those images I have recorded in my mind as if I were living in that beautiful place my respects for you many thanks for letting us be part of such a beautiful nature that God will sell you
