    1. You're right that there are no ugly colors. Color needs context. It depends on what the color is used on, and it depends on what colors it's paired with. The color that's voted "the ugliest color in the world" is a sort of dark greenish brown. On it's own, it's not super appealing. It's exquisite in leather, and you see it reasonably often in museums because Old Masters look amazing on it. People who say that there are ugly colors, don't know how color works.
    2. If you want to pair colors and don't know where to start, you want to think about saturation. You can pair more or less any two colors together if they have the same saturation. Plum and deep sage are gorgeous together. So are lavender and mint green. Neon blue and magenta play well together. So do baby blue and powder pink. Colors that are opposite in saturation also play well together. Plum purple and pale pale mint green are lovely together. So are deep burgundy and pastel yellow. Colors get to be challenging to combine when you start mixing midtones, or murky colors with bright colors. Admittedly, the most gorgeous color combinations are usually the ones that almost don't work, but that takes practice.
    3. Not all neutrals are created equal. You have to pay attention to the undertones. Unless you're really going out on a limb and putting together a really artistic combination, cool neutrals look better with cool colors, and warm neutrals look better with warm colors. "Neutrals go with everything" is the biggest lie going.
    4. Once you've figured out which colors work best on you, don't really deviate from them. It's always better to have fewer pieces that are super easy to mix, than having a lot of pieces that only work with a few other pieces. Unless you're someone who likes to mix seventeen colors into an outfit, pick a few and don't deviate from them, unless you're buying something super special, like a statement piece. Don't feel like you need to do all of the colors to do color.

Maybe it was because of drugs or maybe because we didnt want to be grouped in with emos haha but many of us started intentionally dressing "normal" or blended in with other groups. I still love metal just as much (if not even more) but now its more white tan and rainbows than anything else.

In terms of color theory and stuff, with complimentary colors its good to not have it equally all be two different colors. Try to make one color dominant and have pops of the other color. Or if you do want it to be even, try to mute the saturation of one of the colors. But of course all rules can be broken so if it looks good it looks good.

Advice for the folks at home; If someone is going out of their way to
point out a piece of clothing you enjoy, or finding joy in, or just
plain like wearing, and proceeds to act as if your wearing of the fabric
is somehow "wrong," not of any moral compulsion but judging you based on its perceived quality, don't pay 'em any mind. Chances are, their tastes and yours simply aren't compatible. It's not even a malice thing on their end, either, it's just that you'd probably just make yourself sad and uncomfortable trying to realign yourself to suit their needs. Wear what you want, and keep the wacky shirts.

This such a great thorough yet quick video. I have been wearing like the same 8 or so outfits lately. Mix and match style. I have generally pale skin (enough that I can't wear make up with blue in it bc then I look dead, I think it pulls out veins) and dark hair, eyes, brows so I am pretty aware of like contrast and balance as far as that. My fav neutrals are often darker grays over black, white or light grey. I don't own a bunch of tans I typically have more browns bc im, as stated, pale. My go to lazy, I don't fit in anything lately, outfits are typically Sweats, men's tees, leggings, sweater, maybe a hoodie. They follow a lot of these rules without much effort. The color pairings made me think of an outfit I should definitely try that's like a grey graphic long-sleeved with the graphic being off white and a very yellow green and a blush pink corduroy skirt. I love that combo lately in so many other things I jsut haven't tried it in clothes bc im in a bit if a rough spot with my body lately and not feeling super experimental.
I also think that reds and blues can totally be neutrals in the right outfits.
I di so many arts in college and a rule from interior design that I think is also helpful in fahsion if you're lost is to stick to 2 or 3 main colors. Ideally 2 main colors and one accent color. It's an amazing place to start until you know how to break the rules in the best ways. BTW neutrals do not count in this rule. As an example a pink a brown outfit with green accessories is nice but for my outfit to try the grey in my shirt is neutral so my main colors are the green and pink. I could add navy accessories or white accessories. It's all based on the color combos and how colors interact. In my design course we did a project for theory that was helpful for this concept where you had one color and showed how it changed when used on top of 2 dramatically different colors. The relationship is important not just the color separately. Its also why im so indecisive when I'm desmy crochet blankets lately. Anyway I'm rambling

Personally, big fan of resortware shirts for summer fits. You can get some good ones from American Eagle, the specific Colours & patterns change each season but there’s usually a nice mix between overt & subtle patterns. They’re very light, very breezy, & pair well with jeans/khakis & a white tee.

Skin tone alone is not as important as UNDERtones tbh. Once you know what colors look good on you (because of your undertones) then you can know what colors will look good together with color theory

There are many quizzes and surveys on finding your skin color, season, and undertone. This will help you find jewelry, makeup, and clothes that suit you based on hues, saturation, intensity, etc. Even something simple like a foundation match for those who don't wear makeup can help guide you to the next step, color theory.

One day I decided I hated yellow, white, pink, red and purple and threw out all clothing of those colors. Everything I wear now is green, black or brown, with some small amount of blue. 90% of my clothes are green. Someday I hope to make it 100%. I don't even look good in green, it brings out a yellow corpse like tone in my skin. But I don't give half a skinny curled up at the end dog shit about that. I like the color, it makes me happy. Typical outfit: sage green boots, emerald green socks, brown or olive drab jeans or corduroys, *always* tucked into the socks, leather belt, grey or black tee, kelly or emerald green flannel or hoody, hunter green or tan fedora with green beaded tassels, green bandanna (dozens of shades), black canvas or leather purse. I want to look like a cartoon character. Snufkin is my style icon.

2:08 had that discussion with a friend of mine, he said light blue and lavender aren't cool colors and I had to explain that 1. I really fuck with them and 2. I just can't wear a bright red or darker flashy blue

    • @riverAmazonNZ
      @riverAmazonNZ ปีที่แล้ว +1

Most people can understand that red is a warm color and blue is a cool color. But then tell them there are warm blues and cool reds and they get really confused and angry. Color theory is way more complicated than people have any idea
