Throughout history, black people have been delegated to minor roles and/or side characters (like the token black friend or the wise old black person) whose purpose is to help the (not necessarily, but usually) "white protagonist." It was rare for a story to center around a black character. Hollywood has obviously been trying to be better about it.
However, when it comes to animation, there's a notion that audiences like hearing black people, but not necessarily seeing them. I don't know how true that is, but it's interesting. So when a black character is the main character of the story, for some reason they transform into something else. Three examples include The Princess and the Frog (Tiana becomes a frog), Spies in Disguise (Will Smith's Lance Sterling becomes a pigeon) and the upcoming Soul (Jamie Foxx's Joe Gardner becomes a small blue version of himself). They end up spending more time as the other thing rather than being themselves as human. There's certainly representation, but not in the way it's expected. It can happen to other minorities too (like Cuzco in The Emperor's New Groove and Kenai in Brother Bear) but not always (like Mulan and Pocahontas).
So far, one of the only major animated movies to do this correctly is Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. We learn about about him as a character who so happens to be Black/Puerto Rican before he masks up as Spider-Man.
That's just what I've observed and discussed with other film fans.
