The tap water here in Australia has to go through what is considered on of the toughest drinking water regulatory systems, with over 250 guidelines to ensure it is safe to drink.
Mind you, the taste of the tap water does change from place to place but that is from all different kinds of factors. It doesn't matter that much anyway for me, I am just happy that our water is clean and safe.

Fluoridated and chemed to the Maxx , I don't shower in it let alone drink it 😂, I have rain water and good filtration even then I don't fully trust what comes down in the rains. @@lynneclarke6265 town water good 😂😂 sorry don't mean to laugh but it's far from good....the pH level is off the water contains chlorine and fluoride and other nasty things . It goes through ancient underground pipes leaching heavy metal into it, spring water bottles at source filtered through rock and so on ... With actual minerals in it.... Also the way it flows and bends at right angles all the time...corrupts the molecular structure of the water.... And so much more.... Considering we are made of water..... It is essential to have the best , then again I don't shop at wollies or Coles ..only organic.. call me a snob and I am... But I have a background in natural medicine for 25 years and the research of what I have seen .. people wonder why there is such a cancer epidemic... Lot of it has to do with the pH of the body and certain levels of pH allow cancer to thrive and more , enough of my rant....but no there is no safe or good town water in Australia that's for sure

Here in Belgium they just play the original songs at any time, without disclaimers. I never understood why Americans make such a big deal over a few curse words.
A few years ago we stopped with the 1 and 2 cent coins too in Belgium and I know some other European countries did this also. If you pay electronically there's no change but if you pay cash they will round off to 0 or 5 cents.

Same! It boggles my mind how some US Americans get soooo uptight or offended over "swear words" yet don't blink about all the violence on TV, movies or sadly in the streets. Why give so much power to a few words? Lol. Obviously I don't mean Ian or his family, they are not easily offended. Plenty of Americans don't care too much about swearing ...but a lot do.
Might do some people over there some good to vent and have a good swear now n then rather than getting ragey in other ways.

I know, it's not all the USA, it's the intolerant ones that spoil their image, there are so many beautiful people there, like in any country.

One thing that was not mentioned about the coffee in Australia is that all of those shops are independently owned, and all of the coffee is different. They use different suppliers, different beans, and so there is a lot of variation. Starbucks failed in Australia because it's just not very good, it's expensive and who wouldn't rather buy from a local business rather than a multi-national chain.

They are no longer in circulation or production, however (I believe) they are still legal currency, not that you see anyone use them. Collectors are still looking for them and probably have a small collection of them.

The whole world save for US uses the metric system for ease of calculation. Eg. one cubic centimeter of water (at room temp at sea level) = one milli-liter and weighs one gram. So a cube with a side of ten centimeters contains 1000 cubic centimeters and that volume of water is 1 litre which weighs 1 kilogram. One cubic meter of water weighs one tonne. With distance and area one thousand meters is one kilometer, and an area of a square with a side of 100 meters = 10,000 square meters and is called one hectare. It's just so much easier.

    Coins:
When the metal you use to make the coins is worth more than what's stamped on them, you have to rethink using those coins. It was just easier to discontinue using them, they weren't really useful anymore. In order to buy anything with them, you'd have to carry dozens of them. They're actually considering doing the same to the 5c piece, too. As for the rounding up or down problem, it's not really a problem. If you pay by card, you pay the exact amount, and the only thing you can regularly buy that doesn't go up in bigger increments is fuel, anyway. Like, there's nothing listed as $19.99 these days, it's $19.95.

Hey Ian, just a question about the term bills. Where did that come from coz we call them notes, eg a $10 note. Bills for us are something you have to pay like an electricity bill. Also do you know your bills actually have printed on them "This note is legal tender in the USA?" Hence the question on why you call them bills?

I think the tap water thing is true for a lot of Australia especially in cities that generally have soft water but there are other cities (Adelaide comes to mind) where the water is harder and probably doesn't taste very good.
When Americans think of coffee, do they generally think of drip coffee or espresso and does it change depending on setting (eg at home vs a cafe)? In Australia coffee is basically synonymous with espresso-based hot drinks at cafes, and instant, espresso and moka brewed when having coffee at home. Drip coffee isn't really a thing here.

Adelaide water isn't soft like the eastern states but it's still fine to drink.
From a health and safety perspective, there's no reason to not drink it straight from the tap. That's both the "official" advice and the in practice one - it does contain minerals, but nothing that's actually harmful apart from taste.

As someone who was a young boy when Australia introduced decimal currency on 14th Feb 1966 (I can still remember the jingle), I would like to point out that originally we did have 1 and 2 cent coins as well as 1 and 2 dollar notes, although we never have had a 25 cent (quarter) coin. These were phased out in the 1990's by the Keating government, if I remember correctly, for purely practical reasons and the changing value of the base metals in the smaller coins and the better longevity of the larger value coins over the notes (this was before plastic notes were common place).
I can still remember trying to buy an ice cream from Mr Whippy using a mixture of pennies and cents. The one dollar note was equivalent to the 10 bob (shilling) note and the two dollars to the pound note - not that I had too many of those as a boy....

With the language used on the radio, the commecial stations generally wont, nor will chain stores. we have Triple J, which is the ABC's 'youth' station, and often the independent stations, will give a language warning. they dont abuse it, so if someone who calls in drops a "shit" in convo, they'll let it slide, but will disconnect them if they start cussing out. something like a skate shop or a mechanics shop, where it would be more cultrally acceptable, its free for all.
you wont hear much swearing it on TV before 8pm. but its not such a hard and fast rule. there is a great clip out there from the aussie punk bad Frenzal Rhomb playing live on a commercial network, with a backstage preamble saying that they'd keep it clean. they started the set with one of their less offensive songs, but segwayed into the song "cant move into my house", which has a fairly high ratio of f-bombs. but they didnt pull the plug. I just think Aussies find swearing less offensive in general, they are just words, and very useful ones at that. give the song a listen, it is a great song.

If you are buying groceries, petrol, meat, and veg there can be 1 cent increments so $10.38c. The cash register does all the math. If you pay cash it will round out the total but if you pay buy card it will be the unrounded price. Also we don't have to add any taxes ourself. The price listed or on the tag is the price.

In Australia, there isn’t a specific law that prohibits songs with explicit content from being played on the radio. However, there are industry guidelines and practices that radio stations follow to ensure responsible broadcasting. Here are some key points:
    Parental Advisory Label:
The Parental Advisory label, introduced in 1990 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), is a voluntary warning placed on audio recordings. It alerts parents to potentially inappropriate material, such as violence, sexual content, or profanity.
In Australia, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) adopted a similar label in 20111.
Recordings with the Parental Advisory label are often released alongside a censored version that reduces or eliminates objectionable material. Some retailers distribute both versions, while others choose to offer only the amended pressing1.
    Radio Broadcasting Practices:
Australian radio stations generally follow community standards and self-regulation.
While there’s no strict legal requirement, stations tend to avoid playing songs with excessive profanity during daytime hours when children might be listening.
Some stations may choose to censor explicit lyrics or play edited versions of songs to comply with community expectations.
    Performance and Communication Rights:
Musicians and songwriters have performance and communication rights for their music.
Radio stations need licenses to broadcast music. These licenses cover the performance rights, allowing them to play songs on air.
If a station wants to broadcast your music, they’ll typically obtain the necessary licenses to ensure compliance with copyright laws2.
Remember that individual radio stations may have their own policies regarding explicit content, so practices can vary. If you’re a musician or songwriter, it’s essential to understand your rights and work with reputable broadcasters to ensure your music reaches the right audience while adhering to community standards. 🎵📻12

Hey mate, I love your vids/reviews. The fact that you are so open minded/interested in how other countries are is great.
Everyone used to drink tap water. Most people over 25 STILL drink tap water, including me. We have the best water in the world, nothing wrong with it, so why not?????
The thing about "things being censored" made me recall an "experiment" that the govt tried in the late 70's.
I was in the Navy (RAN) for years. Early on, when I was a junior sailor, (and before they invented videos) we used to have a movie every night at sea in the main cafe (where we eat, and a rec area after hours). So 16mm projector, and the average movie was 3 reels.
So you had about 100 sailors all crammed into the cafe to watch the dit (movie).
Anyway, we had a change in the movies we got. They decided that movies had to be censored. So, anyone swearing - cut out. and I mean ANYTHING, shit, damn, bugger - anything. Any nudity/sex/sex references = edited out. And this was PURELY for military. Civilian theatres got them uncut - they just labelled them "R rated" etc.
So, we are all adults, most smoking, drinking beer issue, and if told, can go to war. BUT - can't see an uncut movie.
And they were SO CUT - the movie often didn't make sense. A scene where a guy would walk into a bar, and "something would happen" (swear/violence etc) - ALL CUT. So he would walk in/walk out. So, we'd have to stop the movie, ask if anyone had seen it, they would explain what happened = continue on.
It was SO RIDICULOUS, that it only lasted about 6 months, and then they reverted to the "normal" movie. All the crews complained, and the captains basically said "either don't censor them, or if you do, don't bother, we'll go without" so we got our way/reverted to common sense.
    Idiots.

At the drags in Australia the speed is now in kph, which for us that follow the drags in America it’s a pain in the arse.

A lot of places in Australia drinking tap water is fine depending on farm runoff. I boil it just in case

Re: pennies - they’re not necessary as I’ve never run into a situation where one is needed in for in-person cash transactions. I’ve never run into the “round down” situation when using cash in AU. Sales tax is flat at 10%. Prices include it to begin with and are often rounded to the dollar or .50, .05 at the lowest. Most online transactions are like this too, though some digital transactions may have .01-level amounts, particularly for fees/interest of some kind, or divided payments. I also never use cash in person here because they have almost 100% tap to pay coverage/mobile card terminals.

As an Australian, I didn't know there were "clean" versions of songs.
"Thong" is not a slang term. We call flip-flops thongs because they use a thong between your toes to keep them on your foot.
Most people in Oz don't use cash anymore, in which case you pay the 93c, not 95c (we round to nearest 5c). Of course, when paying cash only the total bill is rounded.

The crazy part is even the US used the word thong for the footwear until relatively recently. Eg, even post WWII ‘thong’ in the US still was used for footwear. It was only used for underwear relatively recently.

I remember the first time I heard the F bomb on free to air, regular network tv. It absolutely blew my mind. I'll be honest, I don't know the exact rules, I'm sure someone can look them up. But basically, after 8 pm anything goes in regards to language and if a movie is rated R, it will be shown unedited (afaik) after 8ish - maybe 8.30 ? But yeaah, that blew my mind.
I also love how they light up their bridges at night and change the lighting, it's really very interesting. I also find the lights on the Sydney Opera House to be fabulous - it doesn't happen a lot because of the cost but when it happens it's beautiful.
It's too bad I don't drink coffee anymore but the coffee culture is really amazing. I will occasionally have one with a friend during winter, It Brisbane I find it too hot in Summer. When my Aussie friends told me Starbucks was coming, I was shocked. They opened a bunch of stores but within a couple of years almost all the stores had closed.
In Australia (and the UK), a fanny refers to a woman's genitalia, so Bum Bag it is. City water in Brisbane sucks, but most of us drink it, I will drink it if it's cold, so I keep about 8 litres in the fridge.
As for the penny issue, rounding up or down works out just fine. It isn't an issue. It really isn't. Aussie coins make more sense, because the smallest coin is 5 cents and 50 cents is the largest. a 1 dollar coin is larger than a 2 dollar coin but the 2 dollar coin is thicker and heavier.
I asked my partner about the size difference between the dollar bills and she genuinely asked me how blind people in America could tell the difference in the denominations. I was stumped. I do remember seeing blind people folding their bills differently and having to rely on the honesty of others, which I find dangerous in today's society. So, having bills of different sizes makes a whole lot more sense now.

We have such good coffee available to us here in Australia. As a coffee lover it is a thing to sit back and enjoy, a relaxation, rather then a thing to get you going. So good coffee shops have a good barista, often produce their own roasts and a good relaxing atmosphere to stop and enjoy it.

The pricing of something at like $12.93 would round up to $12.95 but something like $12.92 would round down to $12.90
The other big difference we have is the price on the shelf vs the register at a shop. Instead of it saying $1 on shelf and coming to $1.50 due to tax, we have the tax already calculated on the shelf price.
So an item that costs $1 on the shelf, is the same price at the register.

It can be funny in our household watching american telly/movies because of the Fahrenheit/Celsius, metric/imperial systems. If we hear the temperature or measurements in a program, the telly/movie is paused and everyone rushes to their tech so they can be the first get the conversions. The winner is always so happy to have 'won' the race.

For the penny. We round down for 1 or 2 cents and up for 3 and 4 cents but only if you are paying cash. And our tap water is like world class recognised and tastes great! And my water bill for a 2 person house for all water is $19 per quarter (yes I did just go find my last bill to check. It's never over $30)

I think our biggest difference is our healthcare, Medicare here is life saving funding. America has a complex health insurance protocol not only dictating who can provide you service/care under your policy but with astronomical monthly costs. In Australia if you present at a public hospital emergency you will be treated FREE! Medical insurance is really only required for elective surgery.

Tap water in brisbane is more pure than Fiji Water, Evian, and most other bottled water brands. The upper Brisbane river is the water source and is so pristine it is mind boggling. The dam was designed to supply the city for 10 years with receiving a drop of rain…

Water in Oz is perfectly safe to drink from the tap. A lot of money is spent by governments here to ensure it's potable. As to coins - the last 2 and 1 cent coins were minted in 1990. Our coins however are different sizes and thicknesses and have different markings on the side for those who are sight impaired. As to metric, we didn't go to the metric system until 1974, so I grew up learning imperial. I still find myself sometimes converting from one to the other. For Fahrenheit the old rule of thumb for celsius to F is double it and add 32. Not perfect, but quick and easy. Can't do much about Melbourne's quirky weather. Move north if it concerns you. Weather up my way is brilliant....literally and figuratively. Thanks Ian, always a pleasure.

as someone living in the netherlands , the sunny warm days here are hell .
    2 humid and hot , you can't do sh*t all day .
so i would never move 2 a place where the sun would always shine and is always warm .
i just can't imagine it being comfortable , when its cold u can dress warm , but when its warm, well there is only so much you can take off.
