Pakistanis must keep in mind that when Pakistani military started the operation in 1971, nearly one fifth of east Pakistan’s population entered India as refugees. It became India’s problem. Hindus of east Pakistan bore the brunt of the Pakistani army’s brutality

When 3 million Bangladeshi were killed and over 10 millions moved to India as refugees, it was moral responsibility of India to help Bangladeshis and rescue them from genocide by Pakistan.

Conclusion from this whole discussion and narration by various speakers is that Pakistan has not learnt any lessons from 1971 . The thing is that the situation is going from bad to worst even at present.

I think some words in HIndi/Urdu should be pronounced as za as required in writing. In Hindi, there must be a dot under the letter ja which makes it za ( For example, words like Zaroorath or zameendar are pronounced by many Hindi wallahs as jaroorath or jamindar. ) By the way, Bengali is much sweeter than Hindi or Urdu or any Indian language I have heard.

"Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it" - George Santayana. The Bangladeshi leaders could read this a few times. And the Hamoodur Rahman report too, written by the Bengali Chief Justice of the Pakistani Supreme Court. The reports sent to a British newspaper by Anthony Mascarenhas a Pakistani journalist of Goan origin should also be made compulsory reading for all Pakistani and Bangladeshi intelligentsia.

    Acute Reasons
    1. Heavy Awami League Manadate.
    2. Z.A Bhutto wasn't accepting the majority of Mujereb & wishing to become P.M of country at central level.
    3. Maulana Maudodi & his party Jamiat i Islami was willing to rule at Provincial Level with out mandate.
    4. Creation of Al Badar & Al Shamas.
    5. Creation of Mukhti Bahni.
    6. Indian involvement & inborn wish to damage Pakistan.
    7. Indian &Indera Gandhi's smartness to avail the situation.
    8. Russian support to india.
    9. American betrayal & neglection to help Pakistan at this crucial movement.
    10. At UN Assembly Session the act of Mr.Bhutto to tear of the Poland's suggestions to stop the war & solve the problem peacefully.
    11. A blunder role of General Yahya for not giving the government power to Mujerb ur Rehman.
    Chronic Reasons
    1. Linguistic problem.
    2. Geographic caus.
    3. Continuous involvement of army in politics.
    4. Continuous neglection of Bengali's rights.
    5. Less developmental work in East Pakistan.
    6. Considering Punjabi as superior & Bengalis as inferior people.
    7. Majority of West Pakistanis in government employees in civil & army cervices.
    8. Prominent role of Bengalis in the creation of Pakistan.

Punjabi adventurism has been the bane of Pakistan: Examples of this: 1965 Indo-Pak war; Cargill; founding of Taliban; harbouring Khalistanis who are now asking for a lease to be given to them of all Sikh holy places and whose soul-deep desire is to revive Ranjit Sigh's Empire which includes most of Pakistan's territory. Two things the Punjabi adventurist ruling class could do to save Pakistan: (i) Don't get mixed up in Bangladesh (ii) Drop the Khalistani or we will lose Baluchistan and the Khalistan drive to revive Ranjit Singh's empire including the taking of Lahore will leave a small slit of Punjab as Pakistan.

The soldiers number amounted to three divisions in November 1971 with a divisional complement being 12,000 in East Pakistan. So, not more than 36,000 regular army complement. You can add the paramilitary (razakars) to this.
For Mr. Hoodbhoy to insist a figure of 93,000 soldiers is not correct. This is also corroborated by the Indian Bengali writer Sharmila Bose in her book, “Dead Reckoning”. So the discussion has started with hostile elements.
On release from jail, Mr Mujib ur Rehman talking to the foreign press in Dhaka quoted this figure off hand and it stuck.
Prior to Operation Searchlight the situation had deteriorated greatly with the brunt being faced by West Pakistan families living in various places in East Pakistan. There were substantial killings of men, women and children living there from West Pakistan.
I am not defending the army action but it started as a response to what has been narrated and was executed with military direction and planning later.
The political situation had been made hopeless by the Chief Martial Law Administrator who joined hands in this evil enterprise not to recognise the people’s vote.
The job was far too great for Yahya Khan whose responsibility had been a coup d’état against Ayub Khan so far. Also his military performance was such that when America expressed displeasure in the ongoing effort in Chhamb in 1965, and to stop the operation to please America, Yahya Khan, a known drunkard was brought in to replace Akhtar Hussain Malik.
Yes, General Bajwa was right when he commented on the war in East Pakistan, it was a schemed political conspiracy at the highest level. There were some notable commendable actions in defending the country after 22 November when India formally attacked East Pakistan.
Just think cooly, the entire populace is against you. What we feel should be directed at Bhutto and Yahya Khan. Admiral Ahsan and Yaqoob Khan deserted their posts when the country needed them.
The army was led by an inefficient commander but the odds were too great and the end was inevitable.
Finally, Yahya Khan was more interested in the diplomacy between America and China while East Pakistan was burning.
It is also possible as suggested by western diplomats and President Nixon in their books that West Pakistan had been saved as a result of the threat given to Russia through moving the 7th Fleet.

Since birth of Islam in desert of saudi Arabia, it failed to evolve itself intellectualy. Only through sword and primitive wars, it did win vast territories. But evolution is the casualty in any war.
After 700 AD, world undergone tremendous change in many waydie intellectual, technological, philosophical etc but Pakistan is one place which has gone back on evolution scale.
I wish and Pakistan moves forward on the evolution scale, but it looks unlikely mainly due to fanatism built into islamic structure.

General Niazi contemptuously described erstwhile East Pakistan as “ A low-lying land of low, lying people”.
With such racist attitudes widespread - indeed the norm - in the Punjabi dominated Western wing of Pakistan, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the artificial bonds of religion that held these two halves in a rocky marriage came apart. Jinnah’s 2 nation theory witnessed its violent sequel 25 years after the first Partition.

English may be accepted as state language. Urdu in west Pakistan and bengali in east Pakistan may be accepted as provincial govt language. In India no language problem created after independence of India. Jinnah was a lawyer not political leader. No qualificatin of administration. Pakistan is a failed experiment and sadly Pakistan hasn’t learnt a bit from its past history and misadventures. It’s still continuing with different models of permutations and combinations. Its Army establishment, its political dispensation and bureaucrats ruling Pakistan over different periods in the last 77 years since its creation, have collectively failed to bring about any discipline and order and peace.

When you hold a discussion on separation of two wings of pakistan in 71 it is imperative that you must also have a representation from Bangladesh also. Except for Dr. Hood the MIT scholar none of the participants appears to be in an age bracket who were mature enough to discern the propaganda fed by pakistan press in then west Pakistan to distinguish between truth and false Hood. Many an opinions offered by the participants still offer the same bias and lack of information that prevailed at that time. So many facts are still precieved differently by even the intelligencia even now fifty years after breakup of pakistan.

All the erudite scholars on the debate agreed irrespective of agreeing on the number of people killed and Women raped the incidents did happen and whatever the estimated number 56000 killed and 200,000 + Women agree these incidents were indeed deplorable.
Hindu women especially eere the targets of Pakisthani Punjabi army men and some Mullahs in west Pakisthsn even declared Hindu women are war booty and rapes are legitamate.
When we agree killings were bad, rapes were bad, looking from another angle should atleast West Pakisthanis appreciate General Niazi by surrendering he prevented massacre of Pak 93000 soldiers by Mukti Bahini and also rape of Pakisthani officers wives and daughters who were in Bangladesh at that time ??
One could argue perpetrators does not deserve mercy but even a perpetrator wants personal self protection snd safety of his women.
