@@romxxii same in france. people love comics from USA & mangas, animes from japan
they atoned every swear words while translating but we began loving animes & related stuff (in France we also have our drawn stories: "bande dessinée" but we discovered comics sooo late...)
I specifically say "comics" "mangas" and "bande dessinée" for 2 reasons: respect for the culture, and you get which one I talk about when writing. they're so different they also deserve their names intact.

Well, French comics (always in graphic novels) are also iconic to me. While comics in US and Japan mostly swing to the entertainment side, French comics always impress me like serious art, not merely mass entertainment. I never thought comics as a media is capable to express like literature or cinema.

At 07:00 when Iroi talks about the 8 maidens
The name of the technique relates back to the "Legend of Orochi" folklore, where eight maidens were offered as a sacrifice to the Yamata-no-Orochi
It’s based off the legend when Orochi had eaten eight maidens who were daughters of Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi
If I remember correctly a team tried to sacrifice kyos girls friend in KOF 97 as in the ending called the THREE SACRED TREASURE team , kyos girlfriend called Yuki says
    Matteru kara ne, Kyo!

    • @xiaosun9293

So the moral of this move is the way to sacrifice 8 maidens

    • @SDSakuragi
      @SDSakuragi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +57

The whole Yamato no Orochi reference went way harder than just that. Kyo's last name is Kusanagi, which is a reference to the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi used to slay the serpent. Iori's Yagami clan used to be the Yakasani, which is another reference to the Yakasani no Magatama. Chizuru is the Mirror Keeper, referring to the Yata no Kagami. And to top it all off Kyo's girlfriend's last name is Kushinada, a direct reference the eighth daughter of Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi

@@happyslapsgiving5421 As far as I understand the translations it wasn't a sacrifice. The serpent would just come once a year to eat one of the daughters every time and they just happened to have 8 daughters.

For Japanese to English special move translations, check out the Art of Fighting series, Last Blade 1 & 2, Kizuna Encounter, Waku Waku 7, World Heroes, and also SvC Chaos which has both Capcom and SNK characters. There's also Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2 which Capcom made.
For odd (at least to Americans) culture references, Sengoku 1 and 2 have a bunch. The first game confused the heck out of us kids back in 1991. Like, why am I a blue and purple cowboy with a katana fighting a giant skull with a wooden spoon in the clouds?
Art of Fighting 2 has some pretty ridiculous translations with the pre-fight sequences and the endings. Lots of "Let's Play" videos on YT where you can see them.
The ending quotes in Fatal Fury Special are also nuts. "Wubba Wubba, I'm in the pink today!" is legendary.
Beyond that, I'd recommend checking out Matt McMuscles video on SNKs weird translations. Should provide some good references/inspiration for more content.
Bonus challenge that isn't SNK, try to translate the voices in Street Fighter 1. They sound like robots screaming into pillows. Lol.

Iori's 8 Maidens move often got referred to as the Maiden Masher in some circles back in the day. Masher referring to mashing out complex inputs (button masher.)

Samurai Shodown was pretty popular in the States. Wish it still was. The tension you feel in that game is unlike any other fighting game! It's almost addicting! But I'm loving these videos. I'm not going to expect much more like it, but I'll sub to you anyway. A channel called "Mrs. Eats" seems to have a little something in it for everyone!

In Brazilian portuguese when Terry uses his special ability "Power Geyser" we thought he said "Toma Whey", with means
"Take some Whey" like the protein. 😂

You have no idea how popular SNK games were and still are in Latin America. In Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil, the fanbase is quite big. Trying to guess the characters' lines as a Portuguese speaker is a really fun exercise.

In English, the 8 Maidens technique is called Maiden Masher. This technique references the cursed pact that Iori's clan, the Yasakani made with Orochi in order to gain an advantage over the Kusanagi. The result of said pact resulted in the Yasakani having their flames, once similar to the Kusanagi gain a purple hue as well as learning the Forbidden Technique 8 Maidens. As for the 8 Maidens, that's referencing the number of women that are annually sacrificed to Orochi in order to appease it.

7:58 Thanks! I didnt play Samurai Showdown very often. But my favorite game character was the tournment judge. Every chance I had, I keep my ears next to arcade soundbox to try to repeat what the judge is saying at every begining of a match. Now I know that the announcer Kuroko says is: "Iza! Jinjouni! Ipponme, shobu!" Its was awsome, in a old time that games in my place speaks few short sentences.
Very cool, although Kuroko says "Ipponme" in second match too.
