      @@colinshum5216 I've discussed this a couple times already but the absolute biggest hitter is the y-pipe. if you're looking for more power and you don't replace your y-pipe first you're doing it wrong. there's up to 45hp hiding in that y-pipe. The problem is if you open it up too much you end up with something that sounds like an exotic. The 2GR absolutely screams as soon as it starts making just a bit more power.

      Lucky, there are quite a few 2016-17 Tacoma owners that had their engine suddenly blow up without explanation. My neighbors 2019 Highlander had the oil pump gear fracture at 115k. The Car Care Nut had one on his channel with a cracked cylinder which also seems to be a common issue.

    I am working on the same engine from a 2019 is300, it also was hydro-locked, and it also broke the same connecting rod, it also sat with water in the cylinders for too long. the rod punched a small hole in the block but i was able to tig weld it up. it had some pitting in the cylinders. the pistons were rusted and gummed up really bad. I was able to get the rings loose without them breaking. cleaned everything up, installed a new rod, re-lapped the valves and got it running, it sounds louder than i would have expected,

    When we designed our E153 to bolt to the 2ZZ, we found a machine shop that milled out the inner part of the bell housing on the trans, then had an "adapter" ring that fit inside. welded that in place then decked it flat, not the E153 has a 2ZZ bolt pattern. It really wasnt that difficult. Im sure it could be done on any trans.
    I also know of the adapter plate kit that lets you bolt the Nissan 370Z trans on the 2JZ, so there is that avenue.

    First time I've seen a breakdown of a modern engine; partly because I just don't look for videos of engine disassembly. These look absolutely nothing like the engines of the 70s & 80s. My interest in this is because my 2017 Tacoma has the 2grfks engine. I can tell it is extremely tightly put together, as just trying to remove the alternator to upgrade it to a 270 amp has been extremely challenging

    I'm a big fan of your channel. Is there any way you would be willing to do more testing with the 2grfks for us Toyota Tacoma guys? A lot of us who own Tacomas seat more hp and torque for better towing etc. Only one or two people have attempted turbocharging using a pair of garret f150 turbos. If you could help us figure out an effective way to increase hp on the 2gr fks, you'd have a lot of people including me paying you for a solution. For example, if you were to figure out a solid set of turbos, intercooler design than I would totally pay you to install. At the very least, if you could provide more info on the 2GR-FKS that would be excellent.

      Unfortunately the ECU situation on the FKS combined with the lack of advantages to that motor compared to the FE means that i am unlikely to spend much time on the FKS. I also thought we learned back in the 90's that putting a crank position sensor in the bell housing was a bad idea. Not sure why Toyota seems to want to learn that lesson for themselves.

I know for a fact that a 2ar, 3sgte, and 2az all bolt to a toyota 4y bell housing, and there is some evidence that they bolt to tacoms 5vz bells. If that is the case, there's a chance the 2gr also bolts to those 2 bell housings!

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep in mind, the integrated exhaust manifold ends up taking about half the space there is between the normal exit and the Spyder's firewall. Once you put lower compression pistons in you're just left with slightly longer cams than the 2gr-fe and direct injection but the DI is probably a liability for turbocharging without an expensive controller for it.

    Wow. Thank you so much for the information videos. I only started watching your videos today. I was going to ask you about this specific motor out of the Lexus 350IS the 2gr-fks. In another video. But then I notice this video with this specific motor that I’m interested in. I did some reading and found out that it is the latest and greatest of the 2gr motor. I’m far from being a mechanic im just learning. So please forgive me. Over the years I’ve been hearing about the 2gr motors being used in the mr2. I have a 1991 Toyota mr2 2.0 twin entry turbo charger with a 5 speed manual transmission. I never did much to it other than upgrade the suspension and wheels. The car has only 108 thousand miles. It s been sitting for years in my garage. I’m now retired from the military and I have some time on my hands. I understand that the 2gr motor out of the 2015 lexas 350IS for some reason is the one that’s pushing the most hp. And torque. Because of the way Toyota tuned it for the 350is and the 350gs. My question is. Is this a good motor for my MR2 with out too much madness. And will allow for maybe a turbo or a super charger sometimes down the road. I understand that you also sell parts that will help with the swap. Can I get a email address or a phone number. I hope you are close to Florida. Thanks

      The 2GR-FKS is not a great plan for the MR2, someone has already done it and it actually made less power than the 2GR-FE but the bigger problem is just that the swap parts and ECU parts don't exist for it.

    Are all the exhaust ports molded and merged into one inside the head casting itself with a single outlet? I worry about exhaust flow with these new integrated exhaust ports, i noticed Honda went this route too and I noticed the first year of the new bmwsupra did too, but then the next year they went back to individual exhaust outlets again. Though they may be adequate for OEM, I can't imagine they are as optimum as a proper longer equal length 4 into 1 tubular header in both N/A and turbo applications. Your thoughts?

I am thinking of cleaning it. It was interesting to see what else is inside of the engine. Thanks for the show. If you can please reply with a picture showing me where the throttle body is located. Thanks In Advance.

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stacie, I can't post a picture in a youtube reply but the tacoma has a different intake than the motor shown in this video. If you look in your engine bay you'll see the airbox on the left with a big about 3" around pipe going into the motor. If you follow that pipe and look under the engine cover(it just pulls off if you pull it upwards) the other end of that pipe is the throttle body.
      But with that said, these Tacomas have not been out for very long and they should almost all still be in their 5yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty period and if you've got throttle body problems that should be covered. What issues are you seeing?

    • @dasianman
      @dasianman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not seeing or having any issues. My Tacoma is a 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 and I have 26,500 miles on it. I just like to keep it running at its peak performance so that I won't have any preventable issues in the future. I am just thinking of spraying some throttle body cleaner on it so it could clean it and maybe clean the Port and Direct fuel injectors on its way to the combustion chamber.

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dasianman Since these motors do not have an EGR system there's really not going to be the buildup like older motors used to have. Plus, just as you said, this motor also has port injectors. Those are there specifically to prevent any carbon buildup on the valve from the little bit of oil vapor that does make it through the crank case vent and into the intake. But either way, with the above instructions you should be able to find the throttle body.

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Someone took their sienna through a flooded road and the engine took a drink, this has nothing to do with Toyota's reliability. That said, take a look at the forums, this engine does have a problem with severe inclines. If you use this truck for rock crawling and such it does like to drink a slug of it's own oil and that can break things. This is an issue that 99.9% of owners are never going to run into but if this is your intended use for the truck you'll want to address this before doing that. It can be fixed somewhat easily with a modified crank case vent setup.

    How much of the additional HP is attributable to the direct injection ?
    The direct injection allows higher compression as well.

    • @FrankensteinMotorworks
      @FrankensteinMotorworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Technically no additional horsepower is attributable to direct injection but exactly as you say, it allows for a higher compression ratio which does result in more horsepower. The 2GR-FKS has 11.8:1 and the 2GR-FE has 10.8:1 so the power difference should be about 1-4% depending on the motor's knock resistance. In this case it's probably about 5hp or so. But this is just an educated guess. The 2GR-FKS has smaller intake runners which will make power earlier and will choke up higher end power compared to the 2GR-FE. But what we don't know exactly is where that "earlier" or "higher end" rpm points are. It's possible that the 2GR-FKS ends up making less power when the same general mods are applied to it, either because it's intake runners are smaller or because it's exhaust runners are shorter. Or it's possible that the 2GR-FKS ends up making power because the smaller intake runners result in a more ideal air velocity match for it's power band and the odd looking integrated manifold ends up with better scavenging characteristics. If i had to bet one way or another i'd say that if you're using the 2GR-FKS with an ECU that controls the direct injection you'll end up with 5-10hp more than what we currently get with the 2GR-FE but if you only use port injection and normal high octane gasoline on the motor you'll end up making the same or possibly even less power. E85 would likely make up for not using the direct injection due to its higher octane rating.
