I love the personal crisis I have hearing this song, trying to figure out if it's a metaphorical grave or not bc she is obviously mad the guy didn't show up but also it's like he's dead to her. English class did not prepare me for this.
I don't think it's a metaphorical grave. If it was a metaphorical grave and she was still mad at him, she probably wouldn't be leaving roses on it. The song sets you up to think she's mad at him for not coming home, but then the final verse reveals that he didn't come home because he had died. She's not mad at him for not coming home, she's sad because he can't come home. That said, English was never my strongest subject in school either, so it's possible for either interpretation to be valid.

this song isn't necessarily about a guy, to me it speaks on so many levels. reminds me of failed relationships but also losing my grandparents, my dad, my dogs... it gives me a feeling of grief, especially that "I hope that the lipstick..." part that always breaks my heart
I love this song and I've always wanted to know that if it's a true story that Chrissy experienced or maybe read or heard about or if it's entirely metaphorical. I think the plot of this song could make a decent Rom-Drama film where she has to learn to get over her lovering being gone and move on.
