Ridiculously helpful video! Got my RG556 without an SD card. Followed this video step by step to set it up from scratch without bloat and things just worked. A few places I hit snags it was invariably because I didn’t pay close enough attention and you had already addressed those potential pitfalls. So far whatever games I’ve thrown at it have run fine. Many many thanks!
Just ordered my 556 and came across this video. OMG! Thankyou. I feel so much more confident doing this now. My first emulator and was worried I might mess it up.
thank you for this awesome, encompassing setup tutorial. especially appreciated the simplicity of the 'pull from github' and 'manually patch' process; was an absolute breeze.
Once again i'm speachless!!i bought r36s and got the r556 agter selling it, you walk me trough both set up perfectly, this video was 1 hour and it flew thanks for your effort.
Great tutorial, as usual. One of the things I like about your Android tutorials is that, even if I don't end up buying an RG556, a lot of this stuff will carry over to the Android devices I do own and enjoy. When you were downloading M64 I noticed that your Odin 2 and one of the Retroids are listed as phones. I'd never thought to notice this before, but Anbernic also seems to be using a phone build of Android instead of a tablet build. Why? It's weird when you think about it. Retro handhelds will spend approximately 98.7% of their useful life in landscape mode. Stock "Tablet Android" has a number of quality of life improvements over "Phone Android" for devices that are primarily used in landscape. Older Android phones could be forced into tablet mode by going into Developer Options and setting the DPI to 600. Granted that was back when tablet mode was more or less a glorified flag to tell apps to give you a few more buttons and tabs. I'm not sure what would happen if you tried that with a newer phone or handheld, now that Google has put actual effort into the tablet experience. If it worked it'd be a nice little upgrade for the RG556, or any Android handheld.
Agreed, I finally got mine after being on the fence and Joey's videos were the deciding factor because he really uncomplicated the setup. It came today and I'll probably start using the included roms until I get my personal sd card ready to go.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Hey man, I just got this handheld a few days ago and have some questions. I have a Dolphin emulator installed on my PC with modded games and my settings (controls, graphics mods, etc.), How do I import all of them to the device? I think connecting the rg556 to my PC and copying all the files to it would work but I'm not sure.
Thanks for this bud, I got my device asbout a week ago and was worried about setting it all up, was easy to follow and really helpful, device runs great!!
I've been trying to decide whether to get an RG Cube but was pretty intimidated by the set up process. My only other experience with this was GarlicOS on the RG35XX Plus which I managed to do and love that thing, but I'm not confident in my abilities on anything else. BUT after watching this video, you've convinced me that I'll be able to do this. This is a really easy to follow guide and I appreciate you taking the time to go through each step. I've just ordered one (hopefully no light bleed), and I'll be reporting back once I've followed your walkthrough with the actual device. Thanks very much!
Update: RG Cube arrived and I did it!! I followed everything you did step by step and it was all exactly the same. I still need to add some games, but got some key ones working. Thank you so much for your help. Time to get back into some classics!
This is going to be my first handheld console since the GBA when i was a kid. Thank you for the great videos. Im excited to get this and follow your guide. Subscribed!
just ordered one. Already have the rg35xx and kinda wish I would've gotten something bigger to begin with but oh well. Regardless. The main reason I got one is for NS games since my Steam Deck can't seem to run ryujinx properly. Being how much better Yuzu works (having already found the apk for it) I'm hoping this little console will play the games that I'm looking at playing. Also really glad I found this video because the stock front end looks horrendous and Daijisho looks a million times better. Thank You.
for nethersx2 put auto-mode off and vents on cool, if you put auto-mode on high it will lag (probably throttling), if you put vents on auto they will not cooldown the system and it will lag.
How do I add new systems to the Anbernic front end? Added them to the SD card but no icon appears in the front end leading to the games. I must be missing something.
I too am having a nightmare with this thing, I’m pretty new to android emulation and bought an rg cube but I can’t find any guides other then people wanting a certain setup. For example how do you install emulators to the internal memory or ROMs to the internal memory?! I have been trying but I cannot seem to do it, I’ve also copied everything onto a bigger sd card as I got one with games on yet the ROMs I added into the games folders don’t even show up when I scan it. I’m on the verge of giving up for now and waiting for more people to release videos that shows things like this. I really don’t want to delete everything like this guy did I just want to add some extra games yet can’t seem to do it for the life of me. I can't seem to find a way to set hotkeys. For example I want to enable retroarch menu when in game. I set the hotkey L3+X. I save configuration, I start the game but nothing happens. I follow the instructions and set it up from scratch but nothing. I tried it at about 10 times and it drives me crazy. Also, I keep getting this message even when I am in Retroarch menu: "retrogame_joypad (18587/4353) not configured. Using fallback". All buttons work in games except the hotkeys.
Hm, not sure what I can say that isn't repeating what I show in the video, but it's as simple as opening RetroArch (not through a game, the app itself from the app menu), configuring controls, then configuring hotkeys then making sure to save current configuration before exiting.
Great video! very instructive an easy to follow. I just have a question, Everytime I open NetherSX2 on my RG CUBE it loads all the games from the SD Card which actually from the path mapped. How can i avoid that issue? as it seems to happen as well while playing and it has to load another mission or something like that
what happens if when it arrives without games I insert the sd card with roms that I use on retroid flip? to create the roms tree does it delete everything ?
I’m having trouble with frame rates constantly dropping in GameCube games. I’ve tried Pokémon Coliseum and fire emblem both hardly get to 16 fps and drop to 12 making everything unplayable
Yep, shared it on Twitter and in my Cube review. No point installing until the full version of GammaOS is released, then I'll have a video out on it all.
Thank you for the guide ! For inserting the sd card, please help ! I had all my roms on a Sandisk 512 microSDXC card, when I put it inside so the logo/text was facing me, I put it until the end, no forcing, but it kept coming out, no clicking sound to stay in place. So I just maintained it by closing the lid. The device then tried to read the card, failed then asked me to format it. It seems I lost all my roms. My question: did I do a mistake while inserting the card ? I believe I followed the instructions. If I made a mistake, how should I insert it ? Thank you.
Hey man I was fallowing this tutorial and realized i had messed up after deleting the apps and the files as instructed in the video. Has anyone gotten 3do games running on the rg556? I just got mine so haven’t tried yet but noticed the device isn’t setup for it. Really amazing video, thank you!!!!

@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you for your frequent responses, Joey. Your content is invaluable for retro handheld newbies. Appreciate your effort. Cheers!
Thank you so much for the guide. I bit the bullet and uninstalled everything after messing around with the RG556 when it arrived. I feel better. I wanted to ask this question, but at the same time not because its kind of down to me to push a bit harder on. Would you be interested in doing a deeper guide on the RG556 with other systems? I own a Miyoo Mini and its as simple as making a folder for corresponding systems and dropping roms. I would love this handheld to be set up ultimately like my replacement / equal to Miyoo. With the RG556 I'm a bit of a novice to Retro Arch and setting it up correctly. I took your list of cores from your website, but I haven't really went further with it, setting Daijisho up, or folders for systems. Again its really down to me working out the quirks with Daijisho but maybe this is something you feel could be a good educational video?
Apologies, may not understand the question, but for other systems I've done deep dives on most of them throughout my channel and a deep dive on Daijisho. You'll never be able to get the full OnionOS MM+ ease of use experience on Android, but once it's all setup, it's close.
How much performance are we losing by using RA for everything instead of standalone emulators? I would assume for stuff like N64 and lower it really shouldn't matter because the HW is powerful enough. I'm really not a fan of having different hotkeys for different systems.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds LOL, i found I just have to go through them and favorite the ones that work and make note of the emu. Trial and error! Thanks again, oh and great tip for killing the Anbernic launcher on the F10 button. Daijisho!!!

Daijisho wise, there were no issue linking YabaSanshiro 2 Pro or any other emulator so far :)
Hey Joey, thanks for the great guide! As a complete handheld noob, I followed your instructions step by step and got my 556 setup last night and it's running great! Only problem is my Saturn games won't run. Does Beetle Saturn need a bios file or do I just have a bad set of roms?
Is it possible to download the roms using the device with the wifi onto sd card that's already inserted. So without using a computer. I have an ipad tho if that doesn't work. I would just need a flash drive if I was going to use that?
Hey dude. I haven't made it through the whole video yet, but I was wondering if it's safe to factory reset from android menu? I'm just worried it will make me lose all the anbernic front end stuff or back end stuff, whatever it's called.

On dolphin I have mapped my inputs as you show. However when I try to set inputs for individual games by long pressing on the game icon and going into GameCube input, it just gives me the option of ‘profile’. If I click profile it says ‘you haven’t created any profiles yet’. I’m lost after that. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hey, just go ahead and save a profile with the mapping you want (after following the steps I show in the video, before per game settings). Then you can choose that profile for per game settings.
I can’t get this to work. I’ve saved a profile, then long press on a game, select GameCube input which gives me 4 controller options. I click the cog button next to controller 1, which takes me to a screen with a profile option. I click option and select the profile I set up, then I get no other options. No button selection screen nothing. It’s either the 4 controller option screen, or if I click the cog settings button it just shows controller 1 with the profile I selected, that’s it. Theres nothing else I can do. So frustrating.
@@tazmo2237 Just did it right now. Home screen, settings cog, GC input, cog on right, map controls, profiles, save new profile, give it a name, push hold on game, edit game settings, Gamecube input, cog on right, profile, choose profile you named. Can we set up the device and add the SD card later. My SD card hasn’t arrived yet but the device has.
You can, you'll just have to point everything to the sd card after.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Is that difficult to do? Appreciate the quick reply
Depends on the person, but no its just going into each emulator and pointing it to the sd card file path instead.
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsthank you so much. If I wanted to wait until my sad card arrives to follow this and set up the emulators etc., could I still use it for other things like apps or games off the play store? Sorry for the questions mate
one of my daijisho platforms keeps giving me a player error of unable to find explicit activity class, how do i fix this ?
Could probably start with which system and emulator it's happening with lol
My Wii games show up as the game id instead of names. How do I fix this or what is the correct way to file the roms so that it reads/displays names correctly
I installed the ps2 emulator. All my games are running slow and with bad frame rates 😢
got my rg556 today, game files cant read by retroarch in rom folder, need to put outside of rom folder!!! unless i go into each console to set path
I prefer to use Bigbox as interface
Have a limit for sd card size?
Nope.
Thank you, how can I switch the big buttons' light off?
Has anyone gotten 3do games running on the rg556? I just got mine so haven’t tried yet but noticed the device isn’t setup for it. Really amazing video, thank you!!!!
Great guide ! Thanks. But i have a question : Is it possible to remap the anbernic button ?
Yep! joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/anbernic-rg556-setup-guide/#Remap_R_button
Hello, thanks for the video, could you make a video on how to modify the native frontend of the console?
Hi, thanks for your videos, it is really useful. I have 1 question : in Daijisho, i could not use the L2 and R2 to change the platform like your video, can you help me to fix it ? Tks
Swipe down from the top, push and hold on the Ns mode toggle and set whichever control scheme you’re using to “Both”.
Question I just want to use the layout provided. But for some reason some games want to load. For example have game cube animal crossing working but if i load something else through my Sd card zip or unzipped wont read or acknowledge. Same for PSP got a couple titles working but not sure why any idea ? Also tested a game with my pc using emulator and it worked so im confused why when i transfer that rom to Sd over to rg556 it wont play file.
Is it possible to reconfigure the R-Button, which is intended to open the Anbernic Front End, to instead open Daijisho?
Yep, check description.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you for your frequent responses, Joey. Your content is invaluable for retro handheld newbies. Appreciate your effort. Cheers!
great vid joey - if you had to choose one would you pick the rp4 or this anbernic - can you give a few reasons why - thanks
I don't like the RP4, so this. I'll share more in my review at some point later this week.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thanks joey - when you do your review can you say why you dislike the rp4 - it seems like everyone is favouring the rp4 - thanks
No secret, it's not comfortable and not a fan of the control layout or the screen. Pretty simple!
Gaining, the standalone one's have a ton of issues.
compare with other machine RG Cube, RG556,. which one is best to play the follow PS2, wii, NGC, NS emulator is a stable performance?
They're both the same.
Joey do you have a suggestion for MAME games? I can’t seem to get them to run in retroarch. Thanks!
Mame is a beast that even I don't attempt to decipher.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds LOL, i found I just have to go through them and favorite the ones that work and make note of the emu. Trial and error! Thanks again, oh and great tip for killing the Anbernic launcher on the F10 button. Daijisho!!!
Why failed to retrieve core list after i .. click core update on .. swan station.. help me
Great tutorial Joey! I got a question because Diketsu doesn’t scan my PS VITA games … can You help me with this one?

@@JoeysRetroHandhelds you’re the best!;) thanks for
Great tutorial. Unfortunately on my end Nethersx2 won't install. It just says "something went wrong. App not installed"
Is there any harm if I keep the M64Plus FZ Pro that Anbernic already installed to avoid paying for it to be installed again?
It's out of date and will never update.
If I want to download crash twinsanity Ps2 how could I ?
Thank you!
Great guide :)
Couple questions, is Daijisho recommended over Emulation Station DE?
Total Android noob question - at what point do you need to sign into playstore or create a playstore account? (I dont have one, do I need one)
Just personally preference, I prefer Daijisho.
I would create an account and sign in at the beginning.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks, setup was simple with this great guide. I've bought the YabaSanshiro 2 Pro app for Saturn emulation. Do you know if it should dim the screen of my RG Cube when I press the D-pad? Swiping on the screen to bring up the menu brightens the screen again but then dpad or left stick dims.
Daijisho wise, there were no issue linking YabaSanshiro 2 Pro or any other emulator so far :)
since it use exfat, i can’t transfer some ps2 games, it says files too big. any alternatives ?
Exfat doesn't have that issue, Fat32 does.
Hey Joey, thanks for the great guide! As a complete handheld noob, I followed your instructions step by step and got my 556 setup last night and it's running great! Only problem is my Saturn games won't run. Does Beetle Saturn need a bios file or do I just have a bad set of roms?
Hey, yep it does! mpr-17933.bin is the filename for the one you need for US/EU games.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds cool, thanks!
can both setups run simultaneously??
also can your setup be rolled back in case I don't like it?
Is it possible to download the roms using the device with the wifi onto sd card that's already inserted. So without using a computer. I have an ipad tho if that doesn't work. I would just need a flash drive if I was going to use that?
Yep, you can.
Hey dude. I haven't made it through the whole video yet, but I was wondering if it's safe to factory reset from android menu?
I'm just worried it will make me lose all the anbernic front end stuff or back end stuff, whatever it's called.
Doing so resets it to what you received out of the box although it may not recognize the SD card automatically.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds ok thank you
I may have not gotten a full first turn on experience with my cube. There was a calculator and another app when i swiped up to close something after first turn on lol
Amazing dude thanks a bunch for this and the R36s tutorials! Was wondering if there was a way to set the Anbernic button to open up Daijisho?

@@JoeysRetroHandhelds you’re a fucking legend bro thank you
On dolphin I have mapped my inputs as you show.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Hi, thank you. I’ll give it a go. Thanks for the video too, really helped with the setup 👍
The mapping of controls part is where you create different profiles.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Oh I get it now 🙄. Sorry it was me being stupid. I’m quite new to retro gaming so still learning. Thank you again for the help, it’s very much appreciated. Now for some Super Mario Sunshine 👍
this video is great, however how do you add rooms to a new SIM card? I see you only are explaining this to people who have a preloaded sim.. I have a new sim that's completely blank and no ides how to download rooms onto it and what folders to use to put it on the 556.. please hep!
I explained exactly that in the beginning.
I wish I didn’t delete RetroArch…Tekken Tag no longer works on the newer version since it doesn’t have “MAME - Current” core
Is it better to keep the original OS or go with Batocera or EmuELEC with the RG556? Mine is on its way
There is no CFW for the 556.
I'm not sure if I missed something somewhere, I feel like I've re-watched this quite a few times now.
I'm having a problem where L3 is pressed alone or when pressed in combination it minimizes what ever app that is open but in Dijisho L3 attempts to select what ever is on screen / selected but all in all killer video would like advice if possible though ^_^
thanks for helpful video
How You Connect This Device To The TV What Cable I Should Use
What happens when we can’t get some of our roms to play what can we do? Also can you show us how to delete the roms out of the whole device all together so there isn’t so much duplicates so we can re download and try setting up the roms again
You would go into the Files app and access the folders there. From there you can select a folder and rename, copy, move, delete using the menu.
Joey my man my rg556 came in yesturday im loving it but I can’t get my nyxi warrior to work on the Nintendo setting it only works on the Xbox setting even if I go into the GameCube controller mapping any tips?
Not too familiar with that controller, but I'm imagining it's x input which is why it only works on Xbox mode.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds I actually figured it out thank you 🙏
1 hour? my man turning into Ross over time 😅😅😅
I'm Joey.
hi, how i can put all the image for all the rom?...there is a "scraper" for restroarch??...thank's
Why won’t my SD card load its games? I go into se and it says zero games 😢
Hit x and scan for games, should be good after that
Can install yuzu and skyline emulater ?
I just got a RG556 with preinstalled games, but they're all named in Chinese, making browsing and searching for specific games impossible. I guess it's because all the ROM files are named in Chinese and not an easy thing to fix?
