Some random guy from the beyond if they really are tied to the inquisition they will get the geneseed from the terra stores but even then it will be a lifetime before those recruits become veterans. Would have been better to have them lead a ground assault.
Not really, on paper its a pretty solid plan actually. But well, you know what they say "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." And well, things went to hell in a handbasket pretty damn fast. Given hindsight, it would have been better to have half the strike force hit behind the gatehouse and half in front of it. That way you aren't completely buggered, it would have also allowed friendly titans to take part in a long range duel with the enemy titans.
There is a misconception about the Death Korps's high casualties. Many believe that they loose so many men due to bad tactics and suicidal charges. That's is incorrect. High command has been and will always be the greatest killer if Krieg Guardsmen.

Ordering manoeuvres that are patently suicidal for no real gain despite it clearly not being sensible from their position. The second suggests being put into a no-win scenario where even a tactical genius could not accomplish their goals without having their troops slaughtered, because the people moving your regiment about on a tacmap in High Command are idiots. Idiots who do not really even understand the situation they are looking at, if they bothered to look at all. Rex, here, clearly did not care to look before he lept.

This is why Chaos keeps winning, or when the Imperium wins it's a pyrric victory, the people supposedly knowledgeable enough about Chaos to know the threat are poor commanders who ultimately "win" because they have the Grey Knights or some other space marine forces to pull the victory off for them, while the good commanders aren't knowledgeable about chaos so they get fucked over by wildcards like using chemical agents against Nurgle forces and random daemons showing up.

@@hexi1722 In the former case, said Iron Warriors were supported by multiple astartes chapters, whilst in the latter, the Imperial fists were supported by only one near the end. Further, I see the Iron warriors as the evil space marine version of the Krieg guardsmen: a military body designed primarily to attack and break fortified enemy positions, rather than defending what they hold, whilst the Imperial Fist actually are *Defensive* siege experts. Credit where it's due in the cage though, the Iron Warriors fought brilliantly, and had it not been for Gulliman's intervention, they might have bled the Imperial Fists white. That being said, it makes me wish we had a second round where Rogal and Perturabo could go at it with all preparation, and with clear, tactical minds, rather than Rogal's desire for redemption via self-flagellation impeding his planning. I'm sure such a battle would make Vraks look like kids fighting over a sand castle.

The way that lord inquisitor is described makes me think its a spiky haired shounen anime protagonist who has a horribly misplaced faith in the power of friendship.
I love these lore videos, they feel like ancient recitations, tales of legends both in the content, the wording and your voice. But on top of that I enjoyed the post-script too, it was like reading the annotations in the margin of a manuscript made by a monk, breaking character a little to complain about the incompetence of other scholars.
Part of me is happy that this happend to the Loyal Marines.... The Traitor Marines are FAR FAR FAAAAAAAR more active in the war. The Loyal Marines are held back in reserve or refusing to engage and sitting idle. The Traitor Marines doing stuff all the time. It's clear to me that Vraks is where EVERYTHING wrong with the imperium met all at once. Even on a level of the inquisition, what's wrong with it and it's command structure insured nothing could go smoothly. For the former Soviet Union, Chernobile is where a social version of this became impossible to ignore. Vietnam was someting like this in how poorly it went. In both cases, they had decisive affects on both organizations down to their cores. But if I'm guessing correctly, this had virtually no impact on the imperium's organization whatsoever.

Just because he won dose not mean he was a a good commander, If it says anything it speaks to the skill of the death corp that they are able to win despite of there commander. Almost all of his tactics are just taken from 1916 and his men would pay for it. As general gregori (I think) show'd there were tactics that worked better and the fact that hector just ignored the superior tactics and continued to use the exact same tactics after they proved to be wasteful. He only one in large part thanks to the strength and stubbornness of the death corp. Nether dose punching a demon in the face, that's cool and impressive, dose not make you fit to be a commander. People don't get promoted for there skills in hand to hand combat. Inquisitors can serve a purpose in the imperial war machine but not as commanders in the imperial guard. (edit) He also threw away 150 space marines, for nothing, a chapter only has 1000. The red hunters will not recover form this loss. I know this is an old comment but I think these are things to keep in mind.

I also find it funny how each commander goes into this Siege and actually has in good ideas and plans then then proceeds to just do dumber and dumber things and get his men killed for absolutely no good reason
I'm not clear as to why Rex's plan was so terrible; so I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. In theory, the two-pronged attack on the gatehouse seems like a sound (but risky) plan. If the defenders focus on the Astartes, then the Death Korps could move to the gate and demolish it. If the defenders focus on the Death Korps they would get torn apart by the Red Hunters. So long as the defenders could not overwhelm both prongs at once, the gatehouse would fall and the Imperial forces could flood into the citadel, essentially winning the war. Am I misunderstanding something about the plan, or was the plan a failure because of poor planning (bad intelligence gathering about the gatehouse & ravine, underestimating the strength of the defenders, etc.)?

As the request of the Inquisitor lord hector reaches the troops there is a joy in the troops, many whisper the death core credo and thank the emperor and the Inquisitor, for this honor. uniforms are straiten, boots polished, guns cleaned, shovels sharped, gas masks loaded with fresh filters and eye lenses cleaned, if your gone meat him at least make sure you look your best. There a humming and some singing coming form the 30th line core as they prepare for this attack. Inquisitor Jora, ask his bodygaurd what is wrong with them. There normally a depressing, unmissable bunch these krieg men with there gas masks. why are they happy? They just got orders to die. That is why there the death core madam, this is what they live for to die in the name of the emperor. She scoffs mockingly, there will be a lot of that the coming days. And keeps on staring in the distance at the flanking efforts. Later during the battle, when the order was given to reinforce the red hunters at the cost of there lives. Inquisitor Jora saw the change in the death core of krieg again. She had never seen a totally shelled imperial army, faced with space marines. Rise as one and stream at the enemy. It was like the shelling just did not happen or they just did not care about it. It reminded her of mindless cultist. But there was nothing mindless about the death core. It was methodical, hard and disciplined. It was like they were poses by the emperor will or as fearless as space marines. When Inquisitor Jora returned to orbit and started receiving hundreds of messages for Inquisitor lord Hector. She known that those words would break a commanders. For he had trow the 30th into those guns for no gain and with bad Intel on the defense. Intel Inquisitor Jora had altered. These were the letters of the 30th line core troops: thanking Lord hector for this honor and the trust in the 30th to see this trough. The fate they had in him, for he was surely the hand of the emperor. There love for him as commander and for these well deserved orders for there core. These letters with the news of the losses after 7 days will haunt lord hector the rest of his life. As Inquisitor Jora steps into her personal quarters: she smiles, its a nasty thing, jagged and full of malice. The cracks in lord hectors humors are forming, with the unbalance with the high lords and his calm breaking, his efforts will fail lord. She says into the dark of the corner. there were millions of gaurdsmen to waste at the beginning. but only thousands when it truly mattered. that's how the number scaling makes sense considering all factors involved.

This would make a pretty nice sim video game from a lord commender's perspective. Managing the different aspects of your troops in general, elaborating plans, taking your intel from field reports not knowing if they're good or bad intels, establish your reputation amongst your troop and maybe the enemy troops too and doing all this while political intrigue start to make it's way into your command room.

It irks me a lot that Chaos, despite of all the ass kicking they are dealing, will still lose. They seem to have every advantage possinle and yet they are, somehow, supposed to be beaten by the same surfaces they have already massacred so often now.

Arch Trust me: you are going to like this one. Regarding what you have told about the Russians defending a position with a lot of guns. Maybe this is about what my Grndapa did with his unit. He served in the Red army artilery most of the war - and in a certein time when they needed to stop the German ofensive, his unit which has lost almost all of its guns(probably ditched them during a hasty retreat). So they were sent to defend a certein sector against the Germans, which had an old Great war Artilery storage, it had 400 howitzers and huge stockpiles of Ammunition. But they were only 400 man, with no infantry to cover them, no tanks, no nothing - and ofcourse 400 man cannot man 400 guns, as you needed like 3-5 man per gun at the least. So this is waht they did - they have putten all the guns in one long line, and it was a close line - they put the guns very close to each other with no gaps between them - all the 400, this was a mad risk since a single shell to this battery could devastate it if it was to hit thier ammunition, because of their proximity. They also lowered at least some of the guns barrels to shoot in a strait line - these guns were to stop the enemy that got close enough. The idea was that the soldiers will serve the guns in a conveyor line style, all the solders were to run throw the gun line, the first group was loading the guns, the second was firing, etc'. In this way they could not provide a very accurte fire, but this enabled them to operate all of the guns in a rapid fire. And thus they have managed to create an ocean of fire for the whole length of the German attack on their position. The results were amazing, no German was able to break throw the the blocking fire they have created, they have managed to hold the ground against all German attacks for several days. Eventualy his unit was ordered to retreat because the Germnas broke the throw the units which were defending on their flanks, unfortuntaly they had no transport tools to tow the guns or the ammunition.

It’s interesting to see the Death Korps being stuck in a position where their tactics must be completely overhauled. Their comfortable area of having vast reserves of manpower and methodical planning is simply not possible. The worst part is is their extremely reactionary nature towards warfare which leaves them stuck in their impractical tactics.
Y'know this seems like an awful lot of heresy down there. It'd be a shame if these 9 or so inquisitors could fabricate a singular cyclonic torpedo because at this point the planet's a level of ultra-fucked reserved for sisters of battle fighting alongside Grey knights.

Some random guy from the beyond if they really are tied to the inquisition they will get the geneseed from the terra stores but even then it will be a lifetime before those recruits become veterans. Would have been better to have them lead a ground assault.
Not really, on paper its a pretty solid plan actually. But well, you know what they say "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."
And well, things went to hell in a handbasket pretty damn fast. Given hindsight, it would have been better to have half the strike force hit behind the gatehouse and half in front of it. That way you aren't completely buggered, it would have also allowed friendly titans to take part in a long range duel with the enemy titans.
There is a misconception about the Death Korps's high casualties. Many believe that they loose so many men due to bad tactics and suicidal charges. That's is incorrect. High command has been and will always be the greatest killer if Krieg Guardsmen.

This is why Chaos keeps winning, or when the Imperium wins it's a pyrric victory, the people supposedly knowledgeable enough about Chaos to know the threat are poor commanders who ultimately "win" because they have the Grey Knights or some other space marine forces to pull the victory off for them, while the good commanders aren't knowledgeable about chaos so they get fucked over by wildcards like using chemical agents against Nurgle forces and random daemons showing up.

Further, I see the Iron warriors as the evil space marine version of the Krieg guardsmen: a military body designed primarily to attack and break fortified enemy positions, rather than defending what they hold, whilst the Imperial Fist actually are *Defensive* siege experts.
Credit where it's due in the cage though, the Iron Warriors fought brilliantly, and had it not been for Gulliman's intervention, they might have bled the Imperial Fists white. That being said, it makes me wish we had a second round where Rogal and Perturabo could go at it with all preparation, and with clear, tactical minds, rather than Rogal's desire for redemption via self-flagellation impeding his planning.
I'm sure such a battle would make Vraks look like kids fighting over a sand castle.

The way that lord inquisitor is described makes me think its a spiky haired shounen anime protagonist who has a horribly misplaced faith in the power of friendship.
I love these lore videos, they feel like ancient recitations, tales of legends both in the content, the wording and your voice. But on top of that I enjoyed the post-script too, it was like reading the annotations in the margin of a manuscript made by a monk, breaking character a little to complain about the incompetence of other scholars.
Part of me is happy that this happend to the Loyal Marines.... The Traitor Marines are FAR FAR FAAAAAAAR more active in the war.
The Loyal Marines are held back in reserve or refusing to engage and sitting idle.

It's clear to me that Vraks is where EVERYTHING wrong with the imperium met all at once. Even on a level of the inquisition, what's wrong with it and it's command structure insured nothing could go smoothly. For the former Soviet Union, Chernobile is where a social version of this became impossible to ignore. Vietnam was someting like this in how poorly it went. In both cases, they had decisive affects on both organizations down to their cores. But if I'm guessing correctly, this had virtually no impact on the imperium's organization whatsoever.

Just because he won dose not mean he was a a good commander, If it says anything it speaks to the skill of the death corp that they are able to win despite of there commander. Almost all of his tactics are just taken from 1916 and his men would pay for it. As general gregori (I think) show'd there were tactics that worked better and the fact that hector just ignored the superior tactics and continued to use the exact same tactics after they proved to be wasteful. He only one in large part thanks to the strength and stubbornness of the death corp. Nether dose punching a demon in the face, that's cool and impressive, dose not make you fit to be a commander. People don't get promoted for there skills in hand to hand combat. Inquisitors can serve a purpose in the imperial war machine but not as commanders in the imperial guard.
(edit) He also threw away 150 space marines, for nothing, a chapter only has 1000. The red hunters will not recover form this loss.

I also find it funny how each commander goes into this Siege and actually has in good ideas and plans then then proceeds to just do dumber and dumber things and get his men killed for absolutely no good reason
I'm not clear as to why Rex's plan was so terrible; so I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. In theory, the two-pronged attack on the gatehouse seems like a sound (but risky) plan.
If the defenders focus on the Astartes, then the Death Korps could move to the gate and demolish it. If the defenders focus on the Death Korps they would get torn apart by the Red Hunters. So long as the defenders could not overwhelm both prongs at once, the gatehouse would fall and the Imperial forces could flood into the citadel, essentially winning the war.
Am I misunderstanding something about the plan, or was the plan a failure because of poor planning (bad intelligence gathering about the gatehouse & ravine, underestimating the strength of the defenders, etc.)?

As the request of the Inquisitor lord hector reaches the troops there is a joy in the troops, many whisper the death core credo and thank the emperor and the Inquisitor, for this honor. uniforms are straiten, boots polished, guns cleaned, shovels sharped, gas masks loaded with fresh filters and eye lenses cleaned, if your gone meat him at least make sure you look your best. There a humming and some singing coming form the 30th line core as they prepare for this attack.
Inquisitor Jora, ask his bodygaurd what is wrong with them. There normally a depressing, unmissable bunch these krieg men with there gas masks. why are they happy? They just got orders to die. That is why there the death core madam, this is what they live for to die in the name of the emperor. She scoffs mockingly, there will be a lot of that the coming days. And keeps on staring in the distance at the flanking efforts.
Later during the battle, when the order was given to reinforce the red hunters at the cost of there lives. Inquisitor Jora saw the change in the death core of krieg again. She had never seen a totally shelled imperial army, faced with space marines. Rise as one and stream at the enemy. It was like the shelling just did not happen or they just did not care about it. It reminded her of mindless cultist. But there was nothing mindless about the death core. It was methodical, hard and disciplined. It was like they were poses by the emperor will or as fearless as space marines.
When Inquisitor Jora returned to orbit and started receiving hundreds of messages for Inquisitor lord Hector. She known that those words would break a commanders. For he had trow the 30th into those guns for no gain and with bad Intel on the defense. Intel Inquisitor Jora had altered. These were the letters of the 30th line core troops: thanking Lord hector for this honor and the trust in the 30th to see this trough. The fate they had in him, for he was surely the hand of the emperor. There love for him as commander and for these well deserved orders for there core. These letters with the news of the losses after 7 days will haunt lord hector the rest of his life.
As Inquisitor Jora steps into her personal quarters: she smiles, its a nasty thing, jagged and full of malice. The cracks in lord hectors humors are forming, with the unbalance with the high lords and his calm breaking, his efforts will fail lord. She says into the dark of the corner. There a couple of small green snake heads visible, just above the shirt of her uniform, when see pulls off her jacked off and sips on the wine that the servant has left her.
Almost out of hearing out of the depths of the corner she hears a child's voice singing alpha to omega, alpha to omega, alpha to omega.

there were millions of gaurdsmen to waste at the beginning. but only thousands when it truly mattered. that's how the number scaling makes sense considering all factors involved.

Managing the different aspects of your troops in general, elaborating plans, taking your intel from field reports not knowing if they're good or bad intels, establish your reputation amongst your troop and maybe the enemy troops too and doing all this while political intrigue start to make it's way into your command room.

Regarding what you have told about the Russians defending a position with a lot of guns.
Maybe this is about what my Grndapa did with his unit.
He served in the Red army artilery most of the war - and in a certein time when they needed to stop the German ofensive, his unit which has lost almost all of its guns(probably ditched them during a hasty retreat). So they were sent to defend a certein sector against the Germans, which had an old Great war Artilery storage, it had 400 howitzers and huge stockpiles of Ammunition. But they were only 400 man, with no infantry to cover them, no tanks, no nothing - and ofcourse 400 man cannot man 400 guns, as you needed like 3-5 man per gun at the least. So this is waht they did - they have putten all the guns in one long line, and it was a close line - they put the guns very close to each other with no gaps between them - all the 400, this was a mad risk since a single shell to this battery could devastate it if it was to hit thier ammunition, because of their proximity. They also lowered at least some of the guns barrels to shoot in a strait line - these guns were to stop the enemy that got close enough.
The idea was that the soldiers will serve the guns in a conveyor line style, all the solders were to run throw the gun line, the first group was loading the guns, the second was firing, etc'.
In this way they could not provide a very accurte fire, but this enabled them to operate all of the guns in a rapid fire. And thus they have managed to create an ocean of fire for the whole length of the German attack on their position. The results were amazing, no German was able to break throw the the blocking fire they have created, they have managed to hold the ground against all German attacks for several days. Eventualy his unit was ordered to retreat because the Germnas broke the throw the units which were defending on their flanks, unfortuntaly they had no transport tools to tow the guns or the ammunition.

It’s interesting to see the Death Korps being stuck in a position where their tactics must be completely overhauled. Their comfortable area of having vast reserves of manpower and methodical planning is simply not possible. The worst part is is their extremely reactionary nature towards warfare which leaves them stuck in their impractical tactics.
Y'know this seems like an awful lot of heresy down there. It'd be a shame if these 9 or so inquisitors could fabricate a singular cyclonic torpedo because at this point the planet's a level of ultra-fucked reserved for sisters of battle fighting alongside Grey knights.
