- A very brief look and chat about the former 'Victorian' North Wales Hospital in Denbigh. I made this specifically for the Facebook group "Beauty Of Abandoned Places" and for my TH-cam viewers who are also interested in historical buildings.

Nicely done Paul. It seems as though mental hospitals here in the US have also faded away. Many of them are long shut down and abandoned or used for something else. The sad part is that prisons are now housing people that would be better served in a hospital setting. Enjoyed this video. Cheers.

Hi Paul! I wish I had seen this before my visit. I would have asked more questions, and I would have returned on a bright day to find the places to take a few great photos. I lament not spending more time with the hospital. Thanks for the link to the council video.

Well done ,Paul. I've seen many of your walks where you mention "the mental". There were many state mental hospitals in the US as well which were closed in the 1970s with the idea that community care would be better. Sadly, such care was never fully supported.
Many thanks Tim, yes I think it was a mistake closing these hospitals, even could have been used in relation to other medical departments these days.

A very interesting video Paul and a lot of good memories and employment opportunities for the local people. I guess for many patients it was a better life than the current 'Care in the Community' but just too expensive to run in modern times when we are struggling to cope with people living a lot longer than when this hospital was built. Well done!

Interesting history. Magnificent buildings. I'm glad they are going to be refurbished and re-purposed and you are caring for your built heritage, unlike here in Ayrshire and elsewhere in Scotland. I think now if these people had lived here with the meds we have today, some may be able to live in society. I have a Great Aunt who had Alzheimer's at an early age and she was put in the Oregon State Mental Hospital. It grieves me now that she had to go through that because there was not any care for people with Alzheimer's in that day. That is great the patients got to do activities when they lived there. I bet it helped them greatly. Beautiful architecture of this building! It is good they are keeping the buildings.

Thank you Nicola, I have visited the place at night, and it did have some pretty strange noises, staff had stories of things happening, especially on the night shifts... scary stuff. ;-)
Very well presented video with great information, like watching the history channel on sky 👍, it's a very interesting place.

Thank you for sharing this. Beautiful piece of history and I enjoyed it very much. I’m curious as to why they don’t restore the site and make it a tourist attraction. I could see it producing a lot of revenue for the town.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, there was many ideas for what it could be turned into, Hotel, tourist attraction like you said, but they decided on business units, and housing/apartments etc....so we will see :-)

There’s a similar hospital in Sunnyside in Montrose, Scotland now empty.
Very informative, thanks for sharing. The video you linked to simply said NWH closed as large hospitals fell out of favor or something like that. Do you feel the hospital's closure was due more to people better understanding depression and therefore not committing those with depression or was it just money / politics?
The government wanted to shy away from the Mental Asylum's, Enock Powell I think it was at the time, they had a stigma, so they started to close them slowly from the 1980's, and felt people would be better treated in specialist homes/houses, of smaller sizes, and within local communities, with that came savings financially I expect.
Oh Paul that's such a lovely way to describe how it was there ,my eyes lit up when you said the patients got to pick where they worked . Farm and gardening for me ,where do I sign .lol but seriously though it was nice to hear that it wasn't such a scary place at all and neither is mental health. My next door neighbour when he was alive was in there for 9'months. One of my friends from schools mum worked there as a ward sister or even higher. Jamaican lady by the name of Lileth. She loved working there . Thanks Paul I really enjoyed this .x
Glad you enjoyed it Ema, many thanks, yes it was much nicer place than some people try to make out really, and I should think those who worked out in the gardens, or doing things they could relate to and enjoy doing, was a better medicine than any prescribed medication......take care Ema :-)

Yes cameras have been put up now, and they have done a lot of ground work, as for the buildings it's difficult to see without going in really.

Thanks Terry, people these days usually go there G.P and if any signs of mental illness are then sent to a specialist consultant at there local hospital, then treated by visiting specialist clinics or living in special housing with 24hr nursing staff.
@@007vauxhall very poor 'community care' for Mental Health in North Wales imo. They should charge £1.00 for prescriptions and use the money for mental health specialists. NHS Psychologist in Mold for 'talking therapy' waiting list 18 months, terribly under staffed. BTW I'm okay, just past experiences!

Thanks Robert, I had a relative admitted in the 80's for depression too, she never had it again after, they did a great job for her, she always praised the staff.

They have removed some buildings, and started re-landscaping the grounds, but you can't see much of it from outside the hospital perimeter really.

Trust Wales to have the biggest mental hospital in UK. Says a lot for us Welsh. Isn't it! But, nice documentary good coverage. It seems a waste of money to do repairs; it need knocking down completely. Just keep the film footage for people to see what it was like before it was finally bulldozed. Our world has gone completely mad wasting huge amounts of money on useless medicines and foolish projects. How can we therefore talk of a better future. We are going to be worse off than our primitive ancestors were at this rate. Though, you do show the external building in a better light than most that simply show it's a place that belongs in the Hammer house of horrors.
